INTRODUCTION
Jing:สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ
Ben: Ben here! Upper Beginner Season 1, Lesson 16 - Make sure you compare prices at the Thai superstores.
Ben: Hello, and welcome to ThaiPOD101.com, the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai!
Jing: I'm Jing, and thanks again for being here with us for this Upper Beginner S1 lesson.
Ben: In this lesson, you'll learn about เมื่อเทียบกับ mûuea thîiap gàp used to make comparisons.
Jing: This conversation takes place at a Tesco-Lotus store.
Ben: The conversation is between Ploy and her older brother, Pet.
Jing: The speakers are siblings, therefore they will be speaking informal Thai.
Ben: Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Ben: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Ben: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
เพชร ซื้อแบบยกโหลไปเลยนะพลอย เทียบกับมาซื้อหลายๆครั้งทีละสองห่อมันจะไม่คุ้มค่าน้ำมันรถ
Ben: Just pick up a whole dozen. Compare it to coming many times and buying only 2 packs each time, which won’t be worth the cost of gas.
พลอย ทราบแล้วค่ะ ซื้อทิชชู่เสร็จก็เหลือดูตู้เย็นอีกอย่างเดียว
Ben: I know. We bought the tissue, now the only thing left is looking for a refrigerator.
เพชร แต่พี่ว่า ไปดูที่ร้านเครื่องใช้ไฟฟ้าดีกว่า เมื่อเทียบราคากันแล้ว ที่นี่อาจจะถูกกว่านิดหน่อย แต่ที่โน่นของจะมีประกันให้ด้วย
Ben: But I think it’s better to look at an electrical appliance store. When you compare the price, it might be a little cheaper here, but over there items have a guarantee too.
พลอย แล้วแต่พี่เพชรก็แล้วกันค่ะ
Ben: OK then, up to you, Pet.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, what is this Lotus store that they are shopping at?
Jing: Oh, its full name is Tesco Lotus. It was originally started as a joint venture between the British chain, Tesco and some Thai investors.
Ben: So is it like a hypermarket?
Jing: I don’t know. What’s a hypermarket?
Ben: It’s a superstore that combines a department store with a supermarket.
Jing: Oh, I see. Yes, that’s what Lotus is.
Ben: Are there any other hypermarket chains in Thailand?
Jing: Well, the other really big one is Big C. I think Big C and Lotus are equally popular.
Ben: Do you like shopping at these places?
Jing: Yeah, it’s awesome. You can get anything -- food, clothes, beauty products, cleaning supplies, electronics...you name it!
Ben: Yeah I guess it is pretty convenient if you want to stock up on a bunch of things at once. Now how about we take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing:ทีละสองห่อ thii lá sǎawng hàaw
Ben: This means “two packs per time”.
Jing: Right. ที thii can mean a “turn” or “instance”, and ละ lá means “per”. ห่อ hàaw is a classifier for “packs”.
Ben: So the whole phrase then means “two packs per turn.”
Jing: Exactly. In the conversation, Ploy’s brother was telling her that buying only two packs of tissue paper per trip to the store is not economical.
Ben: OK, I got it. And our next phrase comes from the same line in the conversation. What’s the phrase?
Jing:ไม่คุ้มค่า mâi khúm khâa
Ben: This phrase means “not worthwhile”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. ไม่ mâi is the negative particle meaning “not”. And คุ้มค่า khúm khâa is an adjective meaning “worthwhile”.
Ben: How about we hear the whole sentence that both of these phrases came from.
Jing:Sure. Ploy’s brother said... เทียบกับมาซื้อหลายๆครั้งทีละสองห่อมันจะไม่คุ้มค่านำ้มันรถ
thîiap gàp maa súue lǎai-lǎai khráng thii lá sǎawng hàaw man jà mâi khúm khâa nám-man-rót.
Ben: “Compare it to coming many times and buying only 2 packs each time, which won’t be worth the cost of gas.”
Now, what is the last phrase we have?
Jing:อีกอย่างเดียว ìik yàang diiao
Ben: This means “one more thing”.
Jing:อีก ìik can mean “another” or “additional”. อย่าง yàang can be a noun meaning “kind”, “sort”, or “type”. And เดียว diiao means “only” or “single”.
Ben: So altogether we have “another kind only ” or “one additional sort of thing.” How was this phrase used in the conversation?
Jing: Ploy said that a refrigerator was the only additional thing she needed to shop for....ดูตู้เย็นอีกอย่างเดียว duu dtûu-yen ìik yàang diiao.
Ben: I see. Well, now let’s move along to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is เมื่อเทียบกับ mûuea thîiap gàp used to make comparisons.
Jing:เทียบ thîiap is the verb “to compare”. The whole phrase เมื่อเทียบกับ mûuea thîiap gàp means “when compared with”.
Ben: However it could also be understood as “when considering that” because it can be used even in situations that do not involve a comparison of two separate items.
Jing: Yes, that’s correct. So you have to be a little careful how you translate it to English sometimes.
Ben: And how does this phrase fit in a sentence?
Jing:เมื่อเทียบกับ mûuea thîiap gàp will come right before whatever it is that is being compared or considered.
Ben: Now I think the first example from the conversation was in a sentence that we just talked about earlier.
Jing:That’s right. The sentence was...เทียบกับมาซื้อหลายๆครั้งทีละสองห่อมันจะไม่คุ้มค่านำ้มันรถ
thîiap gàp maa súue lǎai-lǎai khráng thii lá sǎawng hàaw man jà mâi khúm khâa nám-man-rót.
Ben: “Compare it to coming many times and buying only 2 packs each time, which won’t be worth the cost of gas.”
Jing: You might notice that the word เมื่อ mûuea is omitted, so the phrase is just เทียบกับ thîiap gàp
Ben: “compared with”. Are there any other variations on the phrase เมื่อเทียบกับ mûuea thîiap gàp?
Jing: Yes, there are. We had another example where the word กับ gàp is omitted, so the phrase is just เมื่อเทียบ mûuea thîiap.
Ben: “when comparing”. And what’s that sentence?
Jing:เมื่อเทียบราคากันแล้ว ที่นี่อาจจะถูกกว่านิดหน่อย แต่ที่โน่นของจะมีประกันให้ด้วย
mûuea thîiap raa-khaa gan láaeo thîi-nîi àat-jà thùuk gwàa nít-nàwy. dtàae thîi-nôon khǎawng jà mii bprà-gan hâi dûuai.
Ben: “When you compare the price, it might be a little cheaper here, but over there items have a guarantee too.”
Ben: Can you make up an example for us that uses the whole phrase, Khru Jing?
Jing: OK, now how about this....การศึกษา gaan-sùek-sǎa means “education”, มหาวิทยาลัย má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai means “university”, and
มัธยมศึกษา mát-thá-yom sùek-sǎa means “secondary education”. So I can give you a sentence like...
กานศึกษาระดับมหาวิทยาลัยยากมากเมื่อเทียบกับมัธยมศึกษา
gaan-sùek-sǎa rá-dàp má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai yâak mâak mûuea thîiap gàp mát-thá-yom sùek-sǎa.
Ben: “Education at the university level is very difficult when compared with secondary education.” How about we break this sentence up into a few parts.
Jing: Sure. กานศึกษาระดับมหาวิทยาลัย gaan-sùek-sǎa rá-dàp má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai
Ben: “Education at the university level”
Jing:ยากมาก yâak mâak
Ben: “is very difficult”.
Jing:เมื่อเทียบกับมัธยมศึกษา mûuea thîiap gàp mát-thá-yom sùek-sǎa.
Ben: “when compared with secondary education.”

Outro

Ben: That's it for this lesson. Then see you next time!
Jing:ลาก่อน
