It is one of the most important temples in Thailand. King Rama I ordered the restoration of Wat Phodharam, an old monastery from the Ayuttaya period, and had it re-established as a royal monastery. Some ashes of King Rama I were also kept under the pedestal of the principal Buddha image, known as Phra Buddha Deva Patimakorn, in the main chapel. Moreover, Wat Pho was considered as the \"first open university,\" and it has the most chedis in Thailand—ninety-nine chedis. Wat Pho is so important that all of the kings in the Chakri dynasty have had to restore it. There are several interesting and well-known things inside of the temple. The Reclining Buddha is one of them. Created during the reign of Rama III, the Reclining Buddha is forty-six meters long and fifteen meters high and decorated with gold plating on his body and mother of pearl on his eyes and his feet. The bottoms of Buddha\'s feet are intricately decorated with 108 auspicious scenes. Phra Maha Chedi of the Four Reigns are chedis surrounded by white walls. Each entrance gate is guarded by a pair of Chinese rock guardians. Each chedi has twelve corners or added notched-rim structures ending in a tall spire and is decorated with colorful mosaics. The main chapel is the place where Phra Buddha Deva Patimakorn is housed. This Buddha image is in the meditation position. Also, some ashes of King Rama I were kept underneath this Buddha image.
