Lesson focus

The bus is an important means of transportation. However, before you get on the bus, you probably want to confirm if the bus is going to your destination. We can accomplish this by asking "Will this bus go to," and then add in a destination. In today's lesson, we'll use the shopping center, Siam Center, as a destination.
In Thai, you can simply say the destination without saying the word for "station." That means, in Thai, "Will this bus go to Siam Center?" is rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào
rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào
Don't forget to add khá or khráp to make this phrase more polite.
Therefore, women say rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khá
rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khá
And men say rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khráp
rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khráp
Now, let's break it down by syllable: rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khá
rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khráp
Now, let's hear this once again: rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khá
rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khráp
The first word, rót, means "car," and is followed by sǎai, which means "route." The third word, níi, means "this." And the fourth word, bpai, means "go." The next word, sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe, is a famous shopping center in Bangkok. The next word, rǔue, means "or," and bplào means "no." It's a pretty long phrase, I know. Let's see what we have. We have "car," "route," "this," "go," "Siam Center," "or," "no."
Although this phrase is useful in many circumstances, you may want to know a little in advance if the bus you are about to take is going to the destination you want to go or not. You may ask someone before you jump into the bus. Simply replace the word níi with nǎi to ask, "Which bus is going to," and then add your destination.
That means, to ask, "Which bus is going to Siam Center?" is rót sǎai nǎi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe
rót sǎai nǎi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe
Let’s hear this one more time: rót sǎai nǎi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe
Don't forget to add khá or khráp. Therefore, women say rót sǎai nǎi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe khá, and men say rót sǎai nǎi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe khráp.
Once you have the right bus, there are a few things you need to know about riding the bus.
First one is when do you pay? In Thailand, once you get into the bus, you will be asked by the driver or the bus boy to pay. But how much is it? You simply tell your destination to the bus boy, and he will tell you how much. It should not be anything more than 30 baht. It is wise to be a little prepared by having some coins or small bills like 20-baht bills ready.

Outro

Okay. To close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase, and you are responsible of saying it loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chôok-dii khâ, that's mean "good luck" in Thai.
Remember, khâ is for women, and khráp is for men. Okay. Here we go.
"Will this bus go to Siam Center?" for women - rót sǎai níi bpai sà-yǎam sen-dtôoe rǔue bplào khá
