Why learn Thai?
How about .... if you love Thailand and want to someday live there, or love to go there on vacations, it would be wise to abandon the western arrogance of " why don't they speak MY language", even though many many Thais speak other languages. It's not an easy language to learn, but if you are in one of the above catagories, it's the smart choice to learn, if for no other reason, so you know what's being said about you .

There are many great reasons to learn Thai. Your experience in Thailand will be greatly enhanced when you can understand more of what is going on. Also, if you learn to read Thai, you'll often find that the Thai language version of the menu in a lot of restaurants has a larger selection of dishes. Being able to speak Thai also comes in handy when you bargain for the price of something you want to buy at a market or night bazaar. :)
