| Anutida: It’s very common and easy to make friends in the Thai workplace. |
| John: That’s good to hear. What makes it so easy? |
| Anutida: Thai people love to talk and even share personal problems with their colleagues. |
| John: In that case, it’s no surprise that people become friends. |
| Anutida: Some of the friendships that start at work can last a long time, too. |
| John: Are Thai people very tactile? Do you often see friends touch? |
| Anutida: All of the time! Close friends often touch each other when speaking. |
| John: How about at work? Would a supervisor touch an employee to show reassurance or their concern? |
| Anutida: Yes, they would. |

| John: As you can see, in English we have many words for this. |
| Anutida: Yes, but in Thai we can use หัวหน้า(hŭua-nâa) for everything. |
| John: So this word is used for anyone that is of a higher rank than you. |
| Anutida: It’s a generic word, so anyone can use it for their superior. |
| John: Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... หัวหน้าทำงานหนัก(hŭua-nâa tham-ngaan nàk) |
| John: ...which means "My boss works really hard." |
| John: Okay, what's the next word? |
| Anutida: ถ้าอย่างนั้น (thâa yàang-nán) |
| John: meaning "In that case, then." |
| John: This is a conjunction phrase. |
| Anutida: It’s used at the beginning of a sentence. |
| John: You can use it when you want to suggest a new idea. |
| Anutida: This is a formal phrase, used in both speaking and writing. |
| John: Is there a more informal version? |
| Anutida: Yes. That’s งั้น(ngán) or ถ้างั้น(thâa ngán). |
| John: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
| Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ถ้าอย่างนั้นคุณต้องดื่มน้ำเยอะๆ(thâa yàang-nán khun dtâwng dùuem náam yóe yóe) |
| John: ... which means "In that case, you have to drink lot of water." |
| John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| John: In this lesson, you'll learn about giving suggestions. |
| John: There are many ways to give suggestions in Thai, and in this lesson we will look at three basic ways to do so. The first is to use "if." |
| Anutida: "If" in Thai is ถ้า(thâa). |
| John: Start the sentence with that, then add the sentence, verb, phrase, or adjective and follow it with |
| Anutida: น่าจะลอง(nâa jà laawng) |
| John: then a verb, and finally |
| Anutida: ดู(duu). An example is ถ้าทำไม่ได้ น่าจะลองถามคนอื่นดู (thâa tham mâi dâi nâa jà laawng thăam khon ùuen duu) |
| John: "If you can’t do it, you should try asking other people." That example uses the phrase "If you can’t do it…" There are a few other phrases that can slot into that part of this structure. |
| Anutida: Yes, such as ถ้าไม่เข้าใจ(Thâa mâi khâo-jai). |
| John: "If you don’t understand…" |
| Anutida: Or ถ้าคุณไม่ชอบ(Thâa khun mâi châawp). |
| John: "If you don’t like it…" What is the second way to make a suggestion? |
| Anutida: You can use พยายาม(phá-yaa-yaam), plus a verb. |
| John: This means "try to…." |
| Anutida: You can use it in phrases such as พยายามพักผ่อนนะ (phá-yaa-yaam phák-phàwn ná) |
| John: "Try to rest more…" |
| Anutida: พยายามออกกำลังกายเยอะๆ (Phá-yaa-yaam àawk-gam-lang-gaai yóe yóe) |
| John: "Try to exercise more…" |
| Anutida: The third way is with อย่า(yàa) plus a verb. |
| John: This is "Don’t + verb" |
| Anutida: For example, อย่าหักโหมนะ (yàa hàk-hŏom ná). |
| John: "Don’t overwork." |
| Anutida: another good example is อย่าสูบบุหรี่ (Yàa sùup bù-rìi) |
| John: Meaning, “Don’t smoke.” Finally, we’ll look at some phrases that will help when explaining a problem you might have at work, or a personal problem that might be affecting your work. These are phrases to say that there isn’t enough of something. |
| Anutida: Yes, such as กินไม่พอ (Gin mâi phaaw) |
| John: "don’t eat enough" |
| Anutida: นอนไม่พอ (Naawn mâi phaaw) |
| John: "don’t sleep enough" |
