In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about your occupation in Thai.
This is Kunakorn Kunalai, and he's on a plane to Thailand.
He asks the passenger sitting next to him, Somchai Saengla,
"Are you a student?"
คุณเป็นนักเรียนหรือไม่ (khun-bpen-nák-riian-rǔue-mâi)
Listen to the conversation, and focus on the response.

คุณเป็นนักเรียนหรือไม่ (khun-bpen-nák-riian-rǔue-mâi)
"Are you a student?"
ไม่ ผมไม่ใช่นักเรียน ผมเป็นนักลงทุน (mâi phǒm-mâi-châi-nák-riian phǒm-bpen-nák-long-thun)
"No, I'm not a student. I'm an investor."
Let's take a closer look at the conversation.
Do you remember how Kunakorn Kunalai asks,
"Are you a student?"
คุณเป็นนักเรียนหรือไม่ (khun-bpen-nák-riian-rǔue-mâi)
First is คุณ (khun), "you," when addressing someone politely. คุณ . คุณ
Next is เป็น (bpen), the verb "to be." Here, it’s like the "are" in "you are." เป็น . เป็น
After this is นักเรียน (nák-riian), "student." นักเรียน . นักเรียน
Last is หรือไม่ (rǔue-mâi), literally "or not." หรือไม่
This starts with หรือ (rǔue), "or." หรือ . หรือ
Next is ไม่ (mâi), "not." ไม่ . ไม่
หรือไม่ (rǔue-mâi) turns a statement in a yes-or-no-question. หรือไม่ (rǔue-mâi)
All together, คุณเป็นนักเรียนหรือไม่ (khun-bpen-nák-riian-rǔue-mâi), literally "you are student, or not?" but translates as "Are you a student?"
