Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to ask and answer the question, "How do you say this?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask someone how a word is pronounced.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
คุณเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอย่างไร (khun rîiak sìng níi wâa yàang rai)
เรียกว่า "ลานจอดรถ" (rîiak wâa "laan jàawt rót")
Once more with the English translation.
คุณเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอย่างไร (khun rîiak sìng níi wâa yàang rai)
“How do you say this?”
เรียกว่า "ลานจอดรถ" (rîiak wâa "laan jàawt rót")
"It's 'parking lot.'”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “How do you say this?”
That's:
คุณเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอย่างไร (khun rîiak sìng níi wâa yàang rai)
Listen to it again:
คุณเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอย่างไร, คุณเรียกสิ่งนี้ว่าอย่างไร (khun rîiak sìng níi wâa yàang rai, khun rîiak sìng níi wâa yàang rai)
This Thai sentence means something like " How do you call this? ” But it means “How do you say this?”
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
เรียกว่า [ ] (rîiak wâa [ ])
This Thai sentence literally translates into " It's called [word].
For example:
"It's 'parking lot.'”
เรียกว่า "ลานจอดรถ", เรียกว่า "ลานจอดรถ" (rîiak wâa "laan jàawt rót", rîiak wâa "laan jàawt rót")
