Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring interesting facts that you must know about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 15: Patong Beach
Patong Beach, or หาดป่าตอง, is a beach on Phuket's west coast. It’s the main tourist resort in Phuket and contains the majority of Phuket's nightlife and shopping destinations. The beach is popular with western tourists, especially Europeans, with numerous hotels located right next to the shore.
Patong Beach is about three kilometers long with a crescent shape in the middle, with white sand, crystal blue water, and gorgeous views. The water is calm and shallow enough for visitors to enjoy and swim safely.
There are also many water sports that visitors can partake in, including snorkeling, or ดำนำ้ตื้น, scuba diving, or ดำนำ้ลึก, and banana boat riding, or บานาน่าโบ้ท. Visitors can rent a speedboat and go snorkeling in the small coves and beaches around Patong Bay, or venture further up the coast to the small offshore reefs.
Patong Beach is also famous for its exciting nightlife, especially on Bangla street. Several pubs, bars, and clubs line this street, and at night the whole place is lit up with colorful lights and packed with people.
Since Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate, Patong Beach is always hot. Still, from November to March the temperature drops a bit, making it a fair amount cooler than the rest of the year and drawing more tourists. If you prefer to enjoy the beach without the frenzied, high-season atmosphere, you should come at the end of the rainy season, which is between August and September. In Thai, the rainy season is called ฤดูฝน.
