Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring interesting facts that you must know about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 20: Phi Phi Islands
The Phi Phi Islands, or เกาะพีพี, are a widely known tourist destination in Thailand. They are a part of the national park called หาดนพรัตน์ธารา in Krabi. The Phi Phi Islands are about forty kilometers away from Krabi and about forty-eight kilometers away from Phuket. It takes a little more than two hours to get there by ferry.
The Phi Phi Islands are awash with breathtaking scenery, and graced with beautiful coral reefs and marine life, limestone mountains with cliffs, caves, crystal clear water, and long white sandy beaches.
The majority of the Phi Phi Islands are comprised of just six islands. Among these, Ko Phi Phi Don or เกาะพีพีดอน is the main island and has a ferry pier, hotels, shops, pubs, bars, diving shops, and schools. There are two bays on the island…อ่าวต้นไทร and อ่าวโละดาลัม, which provide strikingly beautiful views, especially when from the lookout. You will be surprised to see how narrow the sand strip is between the two main parts of the island.
The other island called เกาะพีพีเล is about three kilometers away from เกาะพีพีดอน. There are no shops or accommodation on the island. Ko Phi Phi Le is surrounded by steep limestone hills and shallow water. It has some scenic bays, most notably the pristinely beautiful Maya Bay. The island also is the site of Phaya Naak Cave or ถ้ำพญานาค, notable for its prehistoric paintings of elephants and ships. This cave is also a place where local people come to collect the edible eggs from swift nests to sell.
Besides relaxing and enjoying the stunning views, visitors also come to these islands to go diving and snorkeling, due to the abundance of well maintained coral reefs and amazing marine life. The water is crystal clear and perfect for diving and snorkeling. Other activities such as rock climbing, cliff jumping, fishing, kayaking, or even Thai cooking classes are also quite attractive to many visitors.
So listeners, how did you like this lesson? Did you learn anything interesting?
