Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 6 - Krabi Province
Krabi, or กระบี่ in Thai, is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Thailand, located about 814 kilometers south of Bangkok.
According to archaeological findings, this area is where one of the oldest communities in all of Thailand once thrived. It was home to homo sapiens, or in Thai มนุษย์, in prehistoric times, and continues to be inhabited to this day. Archaeologists discovered stone tools in many places, along with ancient, colored pictures in several caves. In fact, the origin of the name Krabi was presumably derived from ancient "swords" called ดาบ (daab), which were discovered in this area.
Krabi offers an array of natural attractions, including white, sandy beaches, beautiful coral reefs, numerous caves and cliffs, and boasts over one hundred islands, both large and small. The most famous of these islands are the Phi Phi islands, or หมู่เกาะพีพี , which are known for their long beaches, coral formations, colorful underwater scenery, limestone mountains, and beautiful caves.
The Phi Phi islands have two main islets, เกาะพีพีดอน (Ko Phi Phi Don) and เกาะพีพีเล (Ko Phi Phi Le.)
Ko Phi Phi Don's most outstanding attractions are the twin bays อ่าวต้นไทร (Ao Ton Sai) and อ่าวโละดาลัม (Ao Lo Da Lam), which are known for their curving white sandy beaches.
Ko Phi Phi Le is surrounded by limestone mountains and sheer cliffs, and is home to the superbly scenic bay of Ao Maya, known for its emerald crystal sea and secluded beaches. The bay became even more well-known after being featured in the movie "The Beach," featuring Leonardo Dicaprio.
The Phi Phi islands can be reached from both Krabi and Phuket. Two ferry trips to the islands are offered each day for visitors departing from Krabi. For those traveling from Phuket, tour operators of Phuket’s provincial city can be contacted to set up a one-day trip to the Phi Phi islands.
