| Pim: Well, I believe it’s possible for people to feel good with somebody from the first meeting. Why do you ask? |

| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Ohm: Hey Khru Jing, I couldn’t help but notice that some words were spelled a little strange in the conversation. |
| Jing: Yeah, that’s because the characters were chatting on Facebook. When the younger generation chats online, they like to use many non-standard spellings. |
| Ohm: A lot of people do that with English too, so I guess it’s not so strange. Now aside from the odd spellings, what was the meaning of the word อิอิ i-i? |
| Jing: Oh, that? I wouldn’t even call that a word. อิอิ i-i is a sort of giggle sound. People use it to sound more cute. It’s used by girls a lot more than guys. |
| Ohm: Well I guess that makes sense. It’s not very manly to add “hee-hee” to the end of every other comment. |
| Jing: Right. |

| Ohm: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is.... |
| Jing: ด้วยความยินดี ‘dûuai khwaam-yin-dii’ |
| Ohm: This is a standard polite phrase that means “You’re welcome.” |
| Jing: That’s right. ด้วย ‘dûuai’ means “with”, and ความยินดี ‘khwaam-yin-dii’ is a noun meaning “pleasure” or “gladness”. |
| Ohm: I see. So it’s also similar to the English expression “With pleasure”. |
| Jing: Exactly. |
| Ohm: OK, what’s the second phrase? |
| Jing: เป็นไปได้ ‘bpen bpai dâai’ |
| Ohm: This means “to be possible”. |
| Jing: Yes. In a sentence, you will often see เป็นไปได้ ‘bpen bpai dâai’ followed by ที่ ‘thîi’ and then some statement. |
| Ohm: So this pattern will give you “It’s possible that...” and some statement. But what if we want to say the opposite, that something is impossible? |
| Jing: The negative particle ไม่ ‘mâi’ needs to go in the middle of the phrase to make เป็นไปไม่ได้ ‘bpen bpai mâi dâai’ |
| Ohm: “It’s impossible”. Can we hear both of those phrases again? Listeners, please repeat after Khru Jing. First “It’s possible”... |
| Jing: เป็นไปได้ ‘bpen bpai dâai’ |
| Ohm: (pause) “It’s impossible”... |
| Jing: เป็นไปไม่ได้ ‘bpen bpai mâi dâai’ |
| Ohm: (pause) OK, so what’s the last phrase? |
| Jing: ทำความรู้จัก ‘tham khwaam-rúu-jàk’ |
| Ohm: This means “to get to know”. |
| Jing: Correct. ความรู้จัก ‘khwaam-rúu-jàk’ is a compound word formed with two parts. รู้จัก ‘rúu-jàk’ means “to know” or “to recognize”, and ความ ‘khwaam’ makes the word a noun. |
| Ohm: Alright. So ความรู้จัก ‘khwaam-rúu-jàk’ then means “recognition” or “familiarity”. |
| Jing: Yes. And this gives us the whole phrase ทำความรู้จัก ‘tham khwaam-rúu-jàk’ meaning “to make familiar” or “to get to know”. |
| Ohm: Great. Now let’s move along to the grammar section. |

| Ohm: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use แรก ‘râaek’ to talk about “first” things. |
| Jing: แรก ‘râaek’ can be an adjective meaning “first”, or it can be an adverb meaning “at first” or “before”. |
| Ohm: OK. How did we use แรก ‘râaek’ in the conversation? |
| Jing: แรก ‘râaek’ was used in two different ways in the conversation. The first example was when Pim said...ก็มีเธอเป็นลูกค้าคนแรกที่จีบเรา ‘gâaw mii thooe bpen lûuk-kháa khon râaek thîi jìip rao.’ |
| Ohm: “And you’re the first customer to hit on me.” |
| Jing: So in this case, the key words are ลูกค้าคนแรก ‘lûuk-kháa khon râaek’, which means “the first customer”. |
| Ohm: แรก ‘râaek’ is being used as an adjective, and so it follows the noun. |
| Jing: That’s right. We also need to use a classifier when attaching a description to a noun. In this case, the noun is ลูกค้า ‘lûuk-kháa’, which means “customer”. |
| Ohm: Oh, and since a customer is a human, the classifier that goes with it is คน ‘khon’, meaning “person”. |
| Jing: Yes, exactly. In general, the pattern would be...Noun + Classifier + แรก ‘râaek’. So can you guess how to say “the first car”? |
| Ohm: Hmm, let’s see. รถ ‘rót’ means “car”, and the classifier for cars is คัน ‘khan’. So we’d have to say รถคันแรก ‘rót khan râaek’. |
| Jing: Yes. That’s right. |
| Ohm: So then what was the other example of แรก ‘râaek’ from the conversation? |
| Jing: The second example of แรก ‘râaek’ from the conversation was in the sentence...พิมเชื่อเรื่องรักแรกพบรึป่าวจ๊ะ ‘phim chûuea rûueang rák râaek phóp rúe bpàao já’. |
| Ohm: “Do you believe in love at first sight?” |
| Jing: In this case, รักแรกพบ ‘rák râaek phóp’ is a noun phrase. It means “love at first sight”, or more literally “love at first encounter”. |
| Ohm: What other common expressions are made using แรก ‘râaek’? |
| Jing: Well, if we took the first two words from the previous expression, then we’d have รักแรก ‘rák râaek’, which means “puppy love”. |
| Ohm: Oh, I see. รักแรก ‘rák râaek’ is a way to describe the feelings of two people when they first fall in love with each other. |
| Jing: Yes. Just like that. Another important expression we use a lot is ครั้งแรก ‘khráng-râaek’, which means “the first time”. |
| Ohm: So ครั้งแรก ‘khráng-râaek’ can describe any activity that’s done for the first time. |
| Jing: Yes. That’s right. |
