INTRODUCTION
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 18: “Do You Want More Thai Chicken Rice?” I'm Ja.
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express the idea of additional.
Ohm: This conversation takes place at a restaurant.
Ja: And it’s between two friends, Nok and Dao, and a waiter.
Ohm: Nok and Dao are friends, so they'll be speaking informal Thai with each other, but the waiter will be speaking to them in polite Thai.
Ja: Alright, let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Ja: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
ดาว : เธอมาช้า ฉันสั่งอาหารแล้ว ถ้าเธออยากได้อะไรก็สั่งเพิ่มได้นะ

Ja: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
ดาว : เธอมาช้า ฉันสั่งอาหารแล้ว ถ้าเธออยากได้อะไรก็สั่งเพิ่มได้นะ
Ja: You're late; I ordered already. If you want anything, we can order more.
นก : โอเค น้องคะ สั่งอาหารเพิ่มหน่อยค่ะ
Ja: Okay. Waiter, we'll order more food.
พนักงาน : ครับ
Ja: Yes.
นก : เอาข้าวมันไก่ไม่เอาหนังหนึ่งจาน
Ja: I'll have a plate of chicken rice without skin.
พนักงาน : เอาน้ำเพิ่มมั้ยครับ
Ja: Would you like more to drink?
นก : เอาเบียร์ช้างขวดใหญ่
Ja: I'll have a large Chang beer.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Ohm, can you explain to our listeners what khâao man gài is?
Ohm: Sure. As the name suggests, it's chicken served with oily rice.
Ja: Why is the rice oily?
Ohm: Because it's cooked in chicken broth.
Ja: So that gives it some good flavor?
Ohm: Not just good flavor—great flavor!
Ja: And is it unique to Thailand?
Ohm: No, you can get khâao man gài in other countries like Vietnam and Malaysia too. It originally came from China.
Ja: I see. So Chinese immigrants spread this dish to all the countries in the region?
Ohm: That's right. Now everyone can enjoy tasty khâao man gài for lunch!
Ja: Sounds delicious! Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is…
Ohm: ช้า
Ja: This adverb means "slowly."
Ohm: That's right. It's also used to mean "late" because an action took place more slowly than it should have.
Ja: I see. What was the example from the conversation?
Ohm: เธอมาช้า (thooe maa cháa.)
Ja: Meaning, "You're late." Or literally, "You arrived slowly." Okay, what's the next phase?
Ohm: น้อง
Ja: This is a noun that means "younger person" or "younger sibling."
Ohm: Yes, that's right, but you can also use it as a pronoun to refer to anyone younger than yourself.
Ja: Most often, in Thailand, the waitstaff at a restaurant are relatively young men and women, so instead of saying, "Waiter," you can get their attention by calling out to them using...
Ohm: น้อง
Ja: This is what happened in the conversation, when Nok said...
Ohm: น้องคะ สั่งอาหารเพิ่มหน่อยค่ะ (náawng khá. sàng aa-hǎan phôoem nàuy khâ.)
Ja: "Waiter, we'll order more food." Alright, what’s the last phrase we want to look at?
Ohm: หนึ่งจาน
Ja: This phrase means "one plate," and it's made up of two parts—a number and a classifier.
Ohm: หนึ่ง (nùeng) is the number "one," and จาน (jaan) is the classifier for plates and dishes of food.
Ja: What was the example from the conversation?
Ohm: เอาข้าวมันไก่ไม่เอาหนังหนึ่งจาน (ao khâao man gài mâi ao nǎng nùeng jaan.)
Ja: "I'll have a plate of chicken rice without skin."
Ohm: That's right.
Ja: What do you say if you want to order more than one plate?
Ohm: To order more than one plate, you simply change หนึ่ง (nùeng) to a different number. For example, เอาข้าวมันไก่สามจาน (ao khâao man gài sǎam jaan.)
Ja: Meaning, "We'll have three plates of chicken rice." Okay, now on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express the idea of "additional."
Ohm: To talk about something "additional" or something "increasing" or "growing," you can use the verb เพิ่ม (phôoem).
Ja: As a verb, its meaning is "to increase," as in the sentence...
Ohm: ฉันไม่กล้าขอเจ้านายเพิ่มเงินเดือน (chǎn mâi glâa khǎaw jâo-naai phôoem ngoen-duuean.)
Ja: Meaning, "I'm not brave enough to ask my boss to raise my salary." Let's break down the parts of this sentence.
Ohm: ไม่กล้า (mâi glâa) is the phrase "to not be brave" or "to not dare." This is followed by the verb ขอ (khǎaw), meaning "to ask for."
Ja: Then we have the keywords of this sentence, which are...
Ohm: เพิ่มเงินเดือน (phôoem ngoen-duuean)
Ja: Meaning "to increase salary."
Ohm: When you use เพิ่ม (phôoem) as a verb, it can be followed by a direct object to indicate what’s increasing. In this case, it was เงินเดือน (ngoen-duuean), or "salary."
Ja: Can you make a sentence where the subject and verb are "the boss increased the salary?”
Ohm: Sure. I could say, เจ้านายเพิ่มเงินเดือนให้ฉัน (jâo-naai phôoem ngoen-duuean hâi chǎn.)
Ja: "The boss increased the salary for me."
Ohm: Sometimes we use เพิ่ม as an intransitive verb to say that the subject increases, instead of saying that the subject increases an object.
Ja: How does that work?
Ohm: Instead of just เพิ่ม, we use เพิ่มขึ้น. For example, จำนวนคนที่มาทานอาหารที่ร้านเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ (jam-nuuan khon thîi maa thaan aa-hǎan thîi ráan phôoem khûen rûueai-rûueai).
Ja: Meaning, "The number of people eating at the restaurant is increasing."
Ohm: In this example, the subject is the noun จำนวน (jam-nuuan), meaning the "amount." The phrase in the middle is คนที่มาทานอาหารที่ร้าน (khon thîi maa thaan aa-hǎan thîi ráan).
Ja: Meaning, "people who come eat food at the restaurant."
Ohm: Then at the end of the sentence is เพิ่มขึ้น.
Ja: "Increasing."
Ohm: So the basic keywords are จำนวน...เพิ่มขึ้น
Ja: "The amount...is increasing." Can we use เพิ่ม any other way?
Ohm: Yes, เพิ่ม (phôoem) can also be used as an adjective or adverb to mean "more" or "additionally." To do this, we place เพิ่ม (phôoem) after a noun or verb.
Ja: Can you give us an example?
Ohm: Sure. In the conversation, we had the sentence ถ้าเธออยากได้อะไรก็สั่งเพิ่มได้นะ (thâa thooe yàak dâai à-rai gâaw sàng phôoem dâai ná).
Ja: "If you want anything, we can order more food."
Ohm: The key words in this sentence are สั่งเพิ่ม (sàng phôoem), meaning "to order more."
Ja: Was it used in any other sentence?
Ohm: Yes, we also had, เอาน้ำเพิ่มมั้ยครับ (ao náam phôoem mái khráp).
Ja: "Would you like more to drink?" This sentence could also be translated as, "Would you like additional beverages?"
Ohm: That's right. เพิ่ม (phôoem) follows right after the noun น้ำ (náam) or "water," so we can say that น้ำเพิ่ม means "more water" or "additional drinks."
Ja: What was the whole sentence again?
Ohm: เอาน้ำเพิ่มมั้ยครับ
Ja: "Would you like more to drink?" or "Do you want more water?"

Outro

Ohm: Well, that's all the time we have for this lesson.
Ja: Be sure to check out the lesson notes for more examples and explanations.
Ohm: Thanks for listening, and we'll see you in the next lesson.
Ja: See you next time! Bye!
Ohm: แล้วเจอกันครับ สวัสดีครับ

สวัสดีค่ะ ดาลัส

Thank you very much for your comment and joined our lesson activity. You did a really good job with writing sentence. น้ำจิ้มข้าวมันไก่ก็จะเผ็ดๆ ถ้าไม่เผ็ดเติมพริกสับได้ค่ะ :)

Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help. We wish you will have a good progress with your Thai.

Have a good day.
