INTRODUCTION
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 4: “What's the Best Photo You Took in Thailand?” I'm Ja.
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to make superlative statements.
Ohm: This conversation takes place at the beach on Koh Lanta Island.
Ja: It’s between two friends, Nok and Dao.
Ohm: The speakers are friends, so they'll be using casual Thai.
Ja: Alright, Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

นก: ดูสิ พระอาทิตย์ตกสวยมาก
ดาว: เห็นด้วย สวยที่สุด
นก: ถ่ายรูปไว้เยอะๆ เดี๋ยวจะเลือกรูปที่สวยที่สุดไปโพสต์ลงอินสตาแกรม

Look! The sunset is really beautiful.
ดาว: เห็นด้วย สวยที่สุด
I agree. It's the most beautiful.
นก: ถ่ายรูปไว้เยอะๆ เดี๋ยวจะเลือกรูปที่สวยที่สุดไปโพสต์ลงอินสตาแกรม
Take a lot of pictures. We'll pick the most beautiful picture to post on Instagram.
ดาว: จ้ะ
Okay.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ohm: Ja, can you guess which place was Instagrammed more than anywhere else in the world?
Ja: Well, I'd guess it's a world-famous landmark, like the Eiffel Tower.
Ohm: Nope! The most Instagrammed place in the world is Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok.
Ja: Really? Is it Thais or foreign tourists taking all the pictures there?
Ohm: I think it's a mix of both. Bangkok's Suvarabhumi Airport is also in the top ten.
Ja: Wow, a lot of Thai people must be taking pictures with their cell phones then.
Ohm: Yeah, we love to do that a lot. Thailand actually has more cell phones than people. Quite a few people have more than one phone to use with different calling plans.
Ja: That’s interesting! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Now let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases used in this lesson. The first one is…
Ohm: ...พระอาทิตย์ตก
Ja: This is a noun that means "sunset." Just like the English term, this is a compound word.
Ohm: Right. It's made up of the word for "sun," or พระอาทิตย์ (phrá-aa-thít), and the verb "to fall," or ตก (dtòk).
Ja: I bet our listeners would also like to know the word for “sunrise.”
Ohm: It’s พระอาทิตย์ขึ้น The verb ขึ้น (khûen), means "to rise" or "to increase."
Ja: Okay, that makes sense. Can we hear each of those once again? "Sunset."
Ohm: พระอาทิตย์ตก
Ja: And "sunrise."
Ohm: พระอาทิตย์ขึ้น
Ja: What's our next word?
Ohm: เห็นด้วย
Ja: This is a verb that means "to agree," and it's another compound word.
Ohm: The first part, เห็น (hěn), is the verb "to see," and the second part, ด้วย (dûuai) means "also."
Ja: เห็นด้วย (hěn-dûuai) usually follows the subject of a sentence, but if the subject "I" is already clear—as it was in our conversation—then it can act as a stand-alone phrase. Ohm, what was the sentence in our dialogue?
Ohm: เห็นด้วย สวยที่สุด
Ja: "I agree. It's the most beautiful." Okay, what's our last word?
Ohm: ไว้
Ja: This is a verb that can mean "to keep" or "to place." It usually follows another verb to indicate that the action is done in a manner that keeps something preserved. Which sentence used this in the conversation?
Ohm: ถ่ายรูปไว้เยอะๆ
Ja: "Take a lot of pictures."
Ohm: In this sentence, ถ่ายรูป means "to take photos." So ถ่ายรูปไว้ means "to take photos and keep them."
Ja: Alright, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ja: In the previous lesson, you learned how to compare two things by saying " A is more 'something' than B." In this lesson, we'll cover how to make superlative statements in the form of "A is the most 'something'."
Ohm: You do this by adding ที่สุด (thîi-sùt) directly after the adjective or adverb.
Ja: The general pattern is the noun, plus the adjective or adverb, plus ที่สุด (thîi-sùt). Meaning "A is the most 'some quality'". Let's look at an example to explain this pattern better.
Ohm: In the conversation, we had this sentence: เห็นด้วย สวยที่สุด
Ja: Meaning, "I agree. It's the most beautiful."
Ohm: The first part is a phrase of agreement, เห็นด้วย (hěn dûuai). This is followed by the adjective สวย (sǔuai), meaning "beautiful." Then, ที่สุด (thîi-sùt) modifies that adjective.
Ja: So "beautiful" becomes "most beautiful.” In this particular sentence, the object being commented on is omitted because it was understood from the conversation. What would it sound like if we included it?
Ohm: เห็นด้วย พระอาทิตย์ตกสวยที่สุด
Ja: "I agree. The sunset is the most beautiful." In many cases, the adjective or adverb would translate into English using an adjective or adverb ending in "-est." Can you give us an example?
Ohm: วันนี้อากาศร้อนที่สุด
Ja: "The weather today is the hottest."
Ohm: Hey Ja, I have a good idea for some listening practice. How about I say a few adjectives with ที่สุด and you give the audience a second to guess the meaning before telling them the answer.
Ja: That sounds good to me. Let's start!
Ohm: อร่อยที่สุด
Ja: (pause) "The most delicious."
Ohm: ใหญ่ที่สุด
Ja: (pause) "The biggest."
Ohm: เร็วที่สุด
Ja: (pause) "The fastest."
Ohm: หล่อที่สุด
Ja: (pause) "The most handsome."
Ohm: I think it's important to mention that you often place the word ที่ (thîi), meaning "that" or "which," between the noun and the adjective to link them together.
Ja: Okay, so how would you say "the cake that is the most delicious?"
Ohm: เค้กที่อร่อยที่สุด
Ja: And what's "the fastest airplane?”
Ohm: เครื่องบินที่เร็วที่สุด
Ja: Okay, I think we’ve got it.
Ohm: Well, it looks like that's all the time we have for this lesson.
Ja: Be sure to check out the lesson notes for more examples and explanations, or leave us a comment.
