(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: sà-wàt-dii khâ châang. maa ráp rót thîi ao maa sâawm wái mûuea wan-sùk khâ.)
Ben: Hello. I came to pick up the car that I dropped off for repair on Friday.
ช่าง: ครับ ขอดูใบเสร็จด้วยครับ
(CH ANG: khráp. khǎaw duu bai-sèt dûuai khráp.)
Ben: Yes. Can I please see your receipt.
สุชาดา: นี่ค่ะ ดิฉันต้องรีบใช้รถด่วนเลย นี่ก็เสียเวลาเอาเข้าอู่มาหลายครั้งแล้ว

ช่าง: เข้าใจครับ รถของคุณมีปัญหาหลักอยู่ที่เกียร์เสียนะครับ ผมคิดว่าน่าจะเปลี่ยนใหม่เลย
(CH ANG: khâo-jai khráp. rót khǎawng khun mii bpan-hǎa làk yùu thîi giia sǐia ná khráp. phǒm khít wâa nâa jà bplìian mài looei.)

สุชาดา: โอย...ต้องเสียเงินเพิ่มอีกเท่าไหร่คะเนี่ย
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: ooi...dtâwng sǐia ngoen phôoem ìik thâo-rài khá nîia.)

Ben: It should be a lot. I'm sorry. I tried to fix it already.
สุชาดา: เสียดายเงินจังเลยค่ะ
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: sǐia-daai ngoen jang looei khâ.)
Ben: Too bad about my money!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, it looks like Suchada is having some car troubles. That’s no fun.
Pim: No it isn’t. But at least in Thailand auto repairs won’t set you back nearly as much as in some other countries.
Ben: Oh, why is that?
Pim: Well, the labor costs are much lower. And there are lots of small, independent mechanic shops you can go to. Especially if you are looking for a motorbike mechanic, those are all over the place.
Ben: That is pretty handy. If you get a flat tire or something like that, you don’t need to take it very far to get it fixed.
Pim: Right. Just remember that not all mechanics are equally qualified.
Ben: I’ll keep that in mind. Now let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we have is...
Pim: พอสมควร (phaaw-sǒm-khuuan)
Ben: This is an adverb meaning “decently” or “moderately”. What was the sentence in the conversation where it was used?
Pim: เยอะพอสมควร (yóe phaaw-sǒm-khuuan.)
Ben: “It should be a lot.”
Pim: That’s right. เยอะ yóe means “a lot” or “many”, so another way to translate เยอะพอสมควร (yóe phaaw-sǒm-khuuan) might be “It’s a moderately large amount.”
Ben: Or maybe “It’s a decent amount.”
Pim: Yes, that’s a good way to put it.
Ben: Can you think of another sentence that could use this phrase?
Pim: How about...เมื่อวานฝนตกหนักพอสมควร (mûuea-waan fǒn dtòk nàk phaaw-sǒm-khuuan.)
Ben: “Yesterday it rained moderately heavy.” What is the other phrase we want to look at?
Pim: เอามาซ่อมไว้ (ao maa sâawm wái)
Ben: This phrase means “brought in to repair”.
Pim: That’s right. เอามา (ao maa) means “to take in the direction of the speaker”.
Ben: So in other words that could be “to bring”
Pim: Yes. Then, ซ่อม (sâawm) is the verb “to repair”, and ไว้ (wái) is another verb meaning “to keep” or “to preserve”.
Ben: So the whole phrase is like saying “kept here after bringing in to repair.” And the sentence from the conversation was...
Pim: มารับรถที่เอามาซ่อมไว้เมื่อวันศุกร์ค่ะ
(maa ráp rót thîi ao maa sâawm wái mûuea wan-sùk khâ.)
Ben: “I came to pick up the car that I dropped off for repair on Friday.” OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using เสีย (sǐia) to say things are “broken” or “spoiled”.
Pim: เสีย (sǐia) can be used as either a verb or an adjective. It has many possible translations such as “broken”, “ruined”, “spoiled”, “to lose”, “to waste”, and “to pass away”.
Ben: So the exact meaning depends on the context. Is that right?
Pim: Yes. To understand the precise meaning of เสีย (sǐia), we need to look at the words coming right before or after it.
Ben: Give us an example to show us what you mean.
Pim: Sure. In the conversation, we had...
นี่ก็เสียเวลาเอาเข้าอู่มาหลายครั้งแล้ว
(nîi gâaw sǐia wee-laa ao khâo ùu maa lǎai khráng láaeo.)
Ben: “I’ve had to waste time dropping my car off many times before.”
So in this sentence we had the phrase เสียเวลา (sǐia) wee-laa which means “to waste time”.
Pim: That’s right. Here, เสีย (sǐia) is functioning as a verb.
Ben: I think you said it can be an adjective sometimes. Did we have any examples of that?
Pim: We did. Look how เสีย (sǐia) is used in this sentence...
รถของคุณมีปัญหาหลักอยู่ที่เกียร์เสียนะครับ
(rót khǎawng khun mii bpan-hǎa làk yùu thîi giia sǐia ná khráp.)
Ben: “The main problem with your car is the transmission is broken.” So here เกียร์เสีย (giia sǐia) means “broken gear” or “damaged transmission”.
Pim: Exactly. You know, there are so many expressions that use เสีย (sǐia). Want to hear a few?
Ben: Sure. I bet the listeners would love that.
Pim: เสียใจ (sǐia-jai)
Ben: “sad” or “broken-hearted”.
Pim: เสียชีวิต (sǐia-chii-wít)
Ben: “to pass away”
Pim: น้ำเสีย (nám-sǐia)
Ben: “sewage”
Pim: เสียเงิน (sǐia ngoen)
Ben: “to spend money”. And how about one more.
Pim: เสียสมาธิ (sǐia-sà-maa-thí)
Ben: “to be spaced out” or “to lose one’s concentration”. Can we hear all of those once again? This time, listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. First was “broken-hearted”
Pim: เสียใจ (sǐia-jai)
Ben: (pause) Next, “to pass away”
Pim: เสียชีวิต (sǐia-chii-wít)
Ben: (pause) Then was “sewage”
Pim: น้ำเสีย (nám-sǐia)
Ben: (pause) After that was “to spend money”
Pim: เสียเงิน (sǐia ngoen)
Ben: (pause) And lastly, we had “to space out”
Pim: เสียสมาธิ (sǐia-sà-maa-thí)
Ben: (pause) And be sure to check out the lesson notes, where you’ll find more expressions that we didn’t have time to cover.

I'm a bit confused with one of the expressions using เสีย. I thought เสียเงิน had the meaning of 'waste money', while ใช้เงิน meant 'spend money'. Does it just depend on the context? Thanks

Hi,

Many times I found words which can not be added to the wordbank or flashcards. Like พอสมควร

It would be good if all words in the system can be found and trained. Or is there another way to do this?

Thanks

Ferry

Hello Brad,

Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, it depend on the context. If you spend money and feel like it a waste then you can say เสียเงิน. Hope that helps.

Have a nice day.
