John: Slang Expressions to Describe How You Feel
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 8. In this lesson, you'll learn slang expressions to describe how you feel.
John: These words describe the emotions a person might have toward themselves or other people.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are...
Jay: ฮา (haa)
Jay: ส้มหล่น (sôm lòn)
Jay: ขำๆ (khăm khăm)
Jay: อิจ (ìt)
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: ฮา (haa)
John: This literally means "hahaha,” or the sound of laughter, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "funny."
Jay: [SLOW] ฮา [NORMAL] ฮา
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ฮา
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when something or someone is very funny.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] แนตตี้เป็นคนที่ฮามาก [SLOW] แนตตี้เป็นคนที่ฮามาก
John: "Natty is a very funny person."
Jay: [NORMAL] แนตตี้เป็นคนที่ฮามาก
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: ส้มหล่น (sôm lòn)
John: This literally means "an orange drops," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "unexpected good luck or how lucky!"
Jay: [SLOW] ส้มหล่น [NORMAL] ส้มหล่น
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ส้มหล่น
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when something good but unexpected happens.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] วันก่อนส้มหล่นเก็บเงินได้ [SLOW] วันก่อนส้มหล่นเก็บเงินได้
John: "A few days ago, I found money on the street. What luck!"

John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: ขำๆ (khăm khăm)
John: This literally means "giggling," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "just for fun; casual or not serious."
Jay: [SLOW] ขำๆ [NORMAL] ขำๆ
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ขำๆ
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: This expression has two meanings. First, it can describe being humorous or funny. This meaning is closer to the original meaning of the word, i.e. giggling. Second, it can be used as an adjective to say that something is “not serious” or “just casual.” This meaning comes from the fact that when you laugh or giggle, you tend to be in a casual or not serious mood.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] มันแค่คำถามขำๆ อย่าไปจริงจังอะไรมาก [SLOW] มันแค่คำถามขำๆ อย่าไปจริงจังอะไรมาก
John: "It's not a serious question. Don't push yourself too hard."
Jay: [NORMAL] มันแค่คำถามขำๆ อย่าไปจริงจังอะไรมาก
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: อิจ (ìt)
John: This is a shortened form of the word…
Jay: อิจฉา (ìt-chăa)
John: ...meaning “jealous” in English.
Jay: [SLOW] อิจ [NORMAL] อิจ
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: อิจ
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when you are jealous of someone or something. Moreover, it can be used as an exclamation, without using a full sentence.
