Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody! This is Jay from ThaiPod101.com.
Do you know how to say “thank you” in Thai? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
[slowly] ขอบคุณ.
It means “thank you.”
In formal situations, you need to add an extra word at the end. If you're a female speaker, you need to add ค่ะ
[slowly] ขอบคุณค่ะ
It means "Thank you" in a formal way. The word ค่ะ makes the expression polite, but only a female speaker can use it.
It expresses a deeper appreciation for a personal kindness.
If you're a male speaker, you need to add ครับ instead.
[slowly] ขอบคุณครับ
When you want to thank someone in a formal situation as a male speaker, use this expression.
Now you know 3 different ways to say "thank you" in Thai! But how do you respond if someone thanks you?
If someone says "thank you" in Thai, simply say ไม่เป็นไร for casual situations. It means "that's okay." If you're a male speaker, say ไม่เป็นไรครับ or if you're a female speaker, say ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expressions and repeat after me.
