Lesson focus

When traveling a long distance in Thailand, the bus can be a cheap way of getting there. In today's lesson, we're going to work on getting a ticket. We'll use Surat Thani as our destination.
Let's say the city name once more time: sù-râat-thaa-nii
sù-râat-thaa-nii
This city is located in the southern part of Thailand and is well known for its beautiful beaches and famous island.
In Thai, "Ticket to Surat Thani, please." is dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii
Let's break it down by syllable: dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii
Don’t forget to add khâ or khráp to make this phrase more polite.
Therefore, women say dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khâ
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khâ
And men say dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khráp
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khráp
Let's hear this one more time: dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khâ
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khráp
The first word, dtǔua, means "ticket," followed by bpai, which means "go." Therefore, dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khâ and dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii khráp means "A ticket to Surat Thani, please."
Now, if you want to buy more than one ticket at a time, for example, if you wanted to buy two tickets, you can accomplish this by saying dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai
Let's break it down by syllable: dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai
Again, khá and khráp should be added to make this phrase more polite.
Therefore, women say dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai khâ
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai khâ
And men say dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai khráp
dtǔua bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii sǎawng bai khráp
You may notice that we add sǎawng bai in this phrase.
The word sǎawng means "two," followed by bpai, which is a pronoun of "ticket." Therefore, sǎawng bai means "two tickets," and this phrase mean "Two tickets to Surat Thani, please."
Bus ticket in Thailand are first come, first served, so you may sit anywhere available. However, some company may provide you a service where you can select your seat right when you buy your ticket.
Now, you might also need to ask, "How much is it to your desired destination?"
For this example, we'll use the same destination as above. In Thai, "How much is it to Surat Thani?" is bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài
bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài
Let's break it down by syllable: bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài
bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài
Don’t forget to add khá or khráp in this phrase.
Therefore, women say bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài khá
bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài khá
And men say bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài khráp
bpai sù-râat-thaa-nii thâo-rài khráp
This phrase is equivalent to the English phrase, "How much is it to Surat Thani?"

Outro

Okay. To close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase, and you are responsible of saying it loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chôok-dii khâ, that's mean "good luck" in Thai.
Remember, khâ is for women, and khráp is for men. Okay. Here we go.
