Lesson focus

In today's lesson, we'll cover a phrase that will prove invaluable for those of you with allergies to something. Letting other people know about your allergy is vital to a fun and healthy trip. So in today's phrase, we'll go over "I'm allergic to (something)." But before we start, we'll need something that we're allergic to, right? In some cases, allergies to peanuts can be extremely dangerous so let's start there.
In Thai, "I'm allergic to peanuts," for women is dì-chǎn pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khâ.
dì-chǎn pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khâ
And for men, phǒm pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khráp.
phǒm pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khráp
Let’s break it down by syllable: dì-chǎn pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khâ
phǒm pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khráp
Now, let’s hear it once again, dì-chǎn pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khâ
phǒm pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khráp
The first word, dì-chǎn or phǒm means "I" for women and men respectively. The second word pháae means "allergy" while thùua-lí-sǒng means "peanuts." Khâ and khráp is added to make this phrase more polite. Therefore, dì-chǎn pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khâ and phǒm pháae thùua-lí-sǒng khráp literally mean "I'm allergic to peanuts."
You can use this phrase to say you are allergic to something else by simply replacing the word "peanuts" or Thua-Li-Song with things you're allergic to. Let's start with some other common allergies.
I am allergic to shrimp so let's try shrimp, which in Thai is gung.

And the phrase "I'm allergic to shrimp" is dì-chǎn pháae gûng khâ.

And phǒm pháae gûng khráp.

What I usually hear back from people, when I say that I’m allergic to shrimp is, “Oh, poor you. Shrimp tastes so good.” Well, if you hear that too after you say the phrase, remember, you’re not the only one. And what I heard is shrimp doesn’t taste that good.
Anyway, some of my friends are allergic to lactose and milk, so let's try milk, which in Thai is nom.

And the phrase "I'm allergic to milk" is dì-chǎn pháae nom khâ.
dì-chǎn pháae nom khâ
And phǒm pháae nom khráp.

Is anybody allergic to eggs? Well, some do. In Thai, "eggs" is khài.
khài
And the phrase "I'm allergic to eggs" is dì-chǎn pháae khài khâ.
dì-chǎn pháae khài khâ
And phǒm pháae khài khráp.

If your allergy is very serious and you can’t eat any bit of certain food at all, you might say, “I can’t eat at all,” which in Thai is: gin mâi dâi looei.
gin mâi dâi looei.
If you can eat a little bit without having an allergic reaction or your symptoms don’t occur if you only have a little, you may say, “I can eat a little,” which in Thai is: gin dâi nít nàauy.
gin dâi nít nàauy.

Outro

Okay, to close out today's lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible of saying it aloud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chôok-dii khâ, that means "good luck" in Thai.
Remember, khâ is for women and khráp is for men.
