Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: khun gòoet wan thîi thâo-rài khá
{pause}
Jessi: Note that this question is set as how a female speaker would say it, if you are a male speaker, please change the final khá to khráp. You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "When is your birthday?"
Pim: wan-thîi yîi-sìp-sǎawng duuean sǐng-hǎa-khom khâ
Jessi: "It's August 22." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) wan-thîi yîi-sìp-sǎawng duuean sǐng-hǎa-khom khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: wan-thîi
Jessi: meaning "date"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) wan-thîi
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: wan-thîi
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...

Jessi: And next…
Pim: khâ
Jessi: which is the particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is a female.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "It's August 22." and then repeat.
Pim: wan-thîi yîi-sìp-sǎawng duuean sǐng-hǎa-khom khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you say "It's August 22.” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word khá with the word khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: wan-thîi yîi-sìp-sǎawng duuean sǐng-hǎa-khom khráp
{Pause}
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "August 22" with "January 5th."
Pim: wan thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom
Jessi: "January 5th."
Pim: wan thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom
Pim: wan thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "January 5th."
Pim: wan thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "August 22" with "January 5th." Say, "It's January 5th."
Pim: wan thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use khráp instead of khâ. Now let’s try it with a masculine version. To expand on the pattern, replace "January 5th" with "April 8th."
Pim: wan thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon
Jessi: "April 8th"
Pim: (slow) wan thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon (regular) wan thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "April 8th."
Pim: wan thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon khráp
Jessi: Replace the phrase "January 5th" and then use the male speech. Say, "It's April 8th."
Pim: wan thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "April 8th" with "May 13th."
Pim: wan-thîi sìp-sǎam duuean phrúet-sà-phaa-khom
Jessi: "May 13th."
Pim: wan-thîi sìp-sǎam duuean phrúet-sà-phaa-khom
Pim: wan-thîi sìp-sǎam duuean phrúet-sà-phaa-khom
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "May 13th."
Pim: wan-thîi sìp-sǎam duuean phrúet-sà-phaa-khom khráp
Jessi: Replace the phrase "April 8th" and then use the male speech again. Say, "It's May 13th."
Pim: wan-thîi sìp-sǎam duuean phrúet-sà-phaa-khom khráp
Jessi: Ok! Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you when your birthday is. Imagine you’re a female speaker and your birthday is August 22. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun gòoet wan thîi thâo-rài khá (five seconds) wan-thîi yîi-sìp-sǎawng duuean sǐng-hǎa-khom khâ
Jessi: Now imagine you’re a female speaker and your birthday is January 5th. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun gòoet wan thîi thâo-rài khá (five seconds) wan-thîi hâa duuean má-gà-raa-khom khâ
Jessi: Now, imagine you're a male speaker and your birthday is April 8th. Answer the question.
Pim: khun gòoet wan thîi thâo-rài khá (five seconds) wan-thîi bpàaet duuean mee-sǎa-yon khráp

{pause}
