INTRODUCTION |
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ |
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 17: Did you Make Any Copies of Your Thai Report? I'm Ja. |
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson? |
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about redoing an action. |
Ohm: This conversation takes place at an office in Bangkok. |
Ja: And it’s between two friends, Nok and Dao. |
Ohm: The speakers are friends, so they'll be using casual Thai. |
Ja: Alright, let's listen to their conversation. |
Lesson conversation
|
นก: ฝนตกฉันลืมปิดกระเป๋าใบงานเปียกหมดเลย |
ดาว: ต้องทำใหม่ ให้เสร็จก่อนเที่ยงนะ |
นก: ไม่เป็นไร แค่ปริ๊นท์ใหม่ เพราะฉันส่งไฟล์งานเข้าอีเมลแล้ว |
ดาว: ดีมากรอบคอบดี งั้นฉันขอด่วนเลยนะ |
Ja: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly. |
นก: ฝนตกฉันลืมปิดกระเป๋าใบงานเปียกหมดเลย |
ดาว: ต้องทำใหม่ ให้เสร็จก่อนเที่ยงนะ |
นก: ไม่เป็นไร แค่ปริ๊นท์ใหม่ เพราะฉันส่งไฟล์งานเข้าอีเมลแล้ว |
ดาว: ดีมากรอบคอบดี งั้นฉันขอด่วนเลยนะ |
Ja: Now let’s hear it with the English translation. |
นก: ฝนตกฉันลืมปิดกระเป๋าใบงานเปียกหมดเลย |
Ja: It rained, and I forgot to close my bag. The worksheet is all wet. |
ดาว: ต้องทำใหม่ ให้เสร็จก่อนเที่ยงนะ |
Ja: You must redo it, and finish it before noon. |
นก: ไม่เป็นไร แค่ปริ๊นท์ใหม่ เพราะฉันส่งไฟล์งานเข้าอีเมลแล้ว |
Ja: No problem. I just need to reprint it because I sent the file in an e-mail. |
ดาว: ดีมากรอบคอบดี งั้นฉันขอด่วนเลยนะ |
Ja: It’s great that you were so careful. Then, give it to me quickly. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Ja: It's a good thing that Nok was thinking ahead and sent herself the document in an e-mail. |
Ohm: Yes, that was smart. |
Ja: I think anyone would get smart about their paperwork after living in Thailand. |
Ohm: Are you saying that we have too much paperwork? |
Ja: Well, let's just say I think the trees would be happy if some procedures in Thailand were streamlined. |
Ohm: Yeah, sometimes I wonder why we need photocopies of so many things. Thai’s have it a little easier than foreigners in the country, because we just have an ID card with a front and back, not a passport full of pages that need to be copied all the time. |
Ja: Exactly. Okay, now let’s take a look at the vocabulary. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at the usage some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we'll look at is… |
Ohm: ใบงาน |
Ja: This noun means "worksheet." |
Ohm: That's right. ใบ (bai) is the classifier for leaves and flat things like sheets of paper. And งาน (ngaan) is the noun "work." Together, ใบงาน (bai-ngaan) means a "work paper," or "worksheet." |
Ja: We use this word mostly for student worksheets. How might you use it in a sentence? |
Ohm: You could say something like, อย่าลืมเอาใบงานมานะ (yàa luuem ao bai-ngaan maa ná). |
Ja: "Don't forget to bring the worksheet." Okay, what’s our next vocabulary? |
Ohm: หมด |
Ja: This verb means "to be finished" or "to be used up." |
Ohm: That's right. It can also act as an adverb to mean "completely." |
Ja: It’s often used in this sense following an adjective, as in the example... |
Ohm: ฉันเดินตากฝนเปียกหมดเลย (chǎn dooen dtàak fǒn bpìiak mòt looei.) |
Ja: Meaning, "I walked in the rain and got all wet." |
Ohm: In this sentence, the phrase เปียกหมดเลย means "completely wet" or "to get all wet." |
Ja: Okay, what's our last vocabulary item for this lesson? |
Ohm: ด่วน |
Ja: This is an adjective meaning "urgent" or "express." |
Ohm: That's right. You use it to form a number of common compound words such as เหตุด่วน (hèt-dùuan). |
Ja: "Emergency." |
Ohm: ทางด่วน |
Ja: "Expressway." |
Ohm: And ส่งด่วน |
Ja: "To send by express." |
Ohm: ด่วน can also be used in advertisements to catch your attention. |
Ja: For example, you might see it as part of a job listing, meaning that the position needs to be filled urgently. |
Ohm: That's right. |
Ja: Okay, now on to the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about repetition of an action. |
Ohm: In Lesson 16, we learned that อีก (ìik) can follow a verb to express the idea of doing the action "again" or to express the idea of "another" or "more." |
Ja: In this lesson, we'll learn another way to say "again," in which we’re specifically expressing the repetition of the same action. |
Ohm: To do this, we’ll use the word ใหม่ (mài), which is usually the adjective "new" when it follows a noun. |
Ja: However, when it follows a verb, it acts like the prefix "re-" to show the repetition of an action. |
Ohm: That's correct. For example, the verb ทำ (tham), meaning "to do" followed by ใหม่ (mài) has the meaning "redo." |
Ja: We saw this used in the conversation when Dao said... |
Ohm: ต้องทำใหม่ ให้เสร็จก่อนเที่ยงนะ (dtâwng tham mài hâi sèt gàawn thiiang ná.) |
Ja: "You must redo it, and finish it before noon." |
Ohm: Almost any verb can be followed by ใหม่ (mài) to indicate the repetition of an action. Another example was this sentence, แค่ปริ๊นท์ใหม่ เพราะฉันส่งไฟล์งานเข้าอีเมลแล้ว (khâae bprín mài. phráw chǎn sòng fai ngaan khâo ii-mee láaeo). |
Ja: "I just need to reprint it because I sent the file in an e-mail." |
Ohm: In this example, ปริ๊นท์ (bprín) is the verb "to print." By adding ใหม่ (mài) to the end of the verb, we get ปริ๊นท์ใหม่ (bprín mài), which means "reprint" or "print over." |
Ja: It's important to remember that you’d only use this phrase to talk about printing the same document that had been printed once before. |
Ohm: Yes, that's a good point. You normally use ใหม่ (mài) when you repeat the action to make it better, or to replace something that was lost. So it implies that there was something wrong with the previous time. Otherwise, you would use อีก (ìik) instead of ใหม่ (mài). |
Ja: So, for example, if you went to a restaurant but it was closed, or the food was not as good as you expected, and you want to try again, you say… |
Ohm: ไปร้านนั้นกันใหม่มั้ย |
Ja: “Let’s try that restaurant again?” But if you went to a restaurant and you liked it, so you want to eat there again, you say… |
Ohm: ไปร้านนั้นกันอีกมั้ย |
Ja: “Let’s go to that restaurant again?” Okay! Thanks for the explanation! |
Outro
|
Ohm: Well, that's all the time we have for this lesson. |
Ja: Be sure to check out the lesson notes for more examples and explanations. |
Ohm: Thanks for listening, and we'll see you in the next lesson. |
Ja: See you next time, bye! |
Ohm: แล้วเจอกันครับ สวัสดีครับ |
