คนขาย ถูกๆค่ะ ใบละ 400 บาท
Ryan Very cheap. Each hat is four hundred baht.
เจมส์ หา...400 บาท แพงไป ลดให้หน่อยได้ไหมครับ
Ryan Huh? Four hundred baht is too expensive. Can you lower it?
คนขาย 300 บาทขาดตัว
Ryan Three hundred baht is the lowest price.
เจมส์ โหย...ก็ยังแพงไปอยู่ดี ไม่เอาแล้วดีกว่ากลับบ้านกันเถอะนุ่น
Ryan Ooh, that's still too expensive. I don't want it anymore. Let's just go home, Nune.
คนขาย เดี๋ยวค่ะเดี๋ยว 150 บาท เอาไหม
Ryan Wait! Just a minute! Will you take it for 150 baht?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan So khru Pim, what do you think of James’s bargaining skills?
Pim I think he did pretty well. He got the seller to come down to 150 baht from 400 baht.
Ryan Yeah, sometimes if you just start walking away like he did the seller will suddenly cut you a better deal so they don’t lose a sale.
Pim Right. But it doesn’t work all the time. The merchants have to make a profit to stay in business. So, sometimes when they give you their “best price” it really is the lowest they can go. You have to consider the particular situation. Do you have any bargaining tips, khun Ryan?
Ryan Well, from my experience, if you speak Thai you tend to get a more reasonable initial asking price, and then bargaining is not much of a hassle. If you only speak English the seller might set the starting price higher because they think that tourists have a lot of money to throw around.
Pim Street markets and night bazars are also a great environment to practice your Thai speaking skills.
Ryan That’s right. Ok, now let’s move on to the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ryan Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim ลองใส่ดู laawng sài duu
Ryan This phrase means “to try on”.
Pim ใส่ sài is a verb meaning “to wear”, and ลอง...ดู laawng...duu is a pattern we’ve seen before that means “to try to do”.
Ryan Next is...
Pim สวม sǔuam
Ryan This is another verb that means “to put on” or “to wear”. It is a little more formal than ใส่ sài, which also means “to put on” or “to wear”. The next phrase is...
Pim ขาดตัว khàat dtuua
Ryan This phrase means “the lowest price”.
Pim ขาด khàat means “torn”, “severed” or “missing”, and ตัว dtuua means “body”. So in this case the seller is saying that going any lower on the price would be like tearing their body apart.
Ryan Wow, that sounds severe. The fonal phrase is...
Pim พอดี phaaw-dii
Ryan พอ phaaw means “enough”, and ดี dii means “good”. Together they form an adverb that can mean “good enough”, “just right”, or “fit well”. Ok, let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ryan The focus of todays lesson is words for clothing.
Pim The general term for “clothing” is เสื้อผ้า sûuea-phâa, which literally means “shirts-cloth”. ผ้า phâa can mean “cloth” or also “fabric”.
Ryan You may have noticed a tendency with Thai vocabulary words to take a general term and use it as the first part of a compound word for various items belonging to the same category. For example many types of “shops” start with the word ráan, and many vehicles start with the word rót. The same thing happens with clothing.
Pim Here’s an example. หมวก mùuak means “hat” or “cap”, but other types of headwear also begin with this word. So the word for “helmet” is หมวกกันน็อค mùuak-gan-náwk.
Ryan Can we hear those two one more time?
Pim หมวก
Ryan “hat” or “cap”
Pim หมวกกันน็อค
Ryan “helmet”
Pim Another example is เสื้อ. It means “shirt”, and all different types of clothing worn on the upper body begin with this word.
Ryan So, then a “jacket” would be...
Pim เสื้อแจ็คเก็ต
Ryan It literally means “jacket shirt”. Khru Pim, is there such a thing as a “shirt shirt”?
Pim Actually there is. เสื้อเชิ้ต is a button-down dress shirt or work shirt worn with a suit. We took the English word “shirt” and combined it with the Thai word for a shirt to get เสื้อเชิ้ต.
Ryan That’s interesting. What’s the word for “pants” or “trousers”?
Pim กางเกง. And for “underpants” we say กางเกงใน
Ryan So that means “inside pants”. How about shoes and socks?
Pim รองเท้า is “shoes” and ถุงเท้า is “socks”.
Ryan Both of those contain the word for “foot” don’t they?
Pim Yes. เท้า is “foot”. ถุงเท้า literally means “foot sack” or “foot bag”. And รองเท้า means “carrying the feet” or “supporting the feet”.
Ryan Another word used a lot for clothing is ชุด
Pim ชุด means “a set” or “an outfit”. The names for different types of uniforms and suits start with ชุด. So a can you guess, what is a ชุดนักเรียน?
Ryan “student uniform”
Pim And how about ชุดว่ายน้ำ ?
Ryan “swimsuit”
Pim One more important thing to mention with clothing is the different classifiers they use. Hats use ใบ bai. Any type of shirt, pants, or skirt uses ตัว dtuua. Shoes and socks use ข้าง khâang for each individually and คู่ khûu for pairs. And finally, any uniform or outfit that begins with the word ชุด chút also uses ชุด chút as its classifier.
Ryan So “two hats” is?
Pim หมวกสองใบ
Ryan “three skirts”
Pim กระโปรงสามตัว
Ryan “one sock”
Pim ถุงเท้าหนึ่งข้าง
Ryan “five pairs of shoes”
Pim รองเท้าห้าคู่
Ryan and “nine swimsuits”
Pim ชุดว่ายน้ำเก้าชุด
Ryan Be sure to check the lesson notes for a list of all the different clothing words and their classifiers.

sa-wat-dii kha khun Terry,

Thank you very much for your comment and question. I written sown the answer for you before but forgot to click send before turn the computer off so now I have to re write again. ร "r" sound in Thai, when it's in a casual speak we often pronounce as "L" sound or not pronounce at all. ล "L" in casual Thai speaking we wither pronounce a little or not pronounce at all. Where you will hear the "r" and "L" pronounce clearly is when the News reporter speak on TV. Hope that's help. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help. We wish you will have a good progress with your Thai.

Have a good day.

Hello again,

Please disregard my last question. I misunderstood when my friend was teaching me ลด. People still understood me but it's good to know how to pronounce it properly.

Thanks

Sawatdee,

I am continuing to encounter discrepancies with the way words are pronounced in these lessons and what I hear from native speakers. The word ลด clearly would start with an L sound if it's actually spelled that way. However, I learned from a Thai friend that word as starting with a trilled R sound, as if it started with the letter ร. I have pronounced it that way to strangers and they immediately understand me. Can you please explain the difference in pronunciation?

Thank you
