POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Pim: Hey, Ryan! You look so upset! What happened?
Ryan: I just went to the immigration office, and it took me almost four hours just to extend my visa!
Pim: "ใจเย็นค่ะ ไรอัน(jai yen khâ rai-ân)," which is Thai for "take it easy, Ryan."
Ryan: I was sitting and doing nothing for four hours! That's a lot of time, "khruu" Pim!
Pim: "ใจเย็นค่ะ(jai yen khâ)," "take it easy."
Ryan: How could I! I was just about to tell them to hurry up when my name was finally called.
Pim: It's good that you didn't do that! You have to keep yourself cool, or "ใจเย็น(jai yen)" in Thai, when you're dealing with Thai government officers! Blaming them won't help anything!
Ryan: What am I supposed to do then? Just wait?
Pim: Yes, that's why I said you should "ใจเย็น(jai yen)," or "keep yourself cool" and be patient. That's very important in Thai culture.
Ryan: Okay, "khruu" Pim. "ขอบคุณครับ(khàawp-khun khráp)," which means "thank you for the advice."
Pim: "ไม่เป็นไรค่ะ(mâi bpen rai khâ)," which means "you're welcome." Okay, on to the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first phrase is?
Pim: "นี่ครับ/นี่ค่ะ(nîi khráp / nîi khâ)"
Ryan: ""Here you are.""
Pim: When you present something after being asked for it, you say "นี่ครับ(nîi khráp)" or "นี่ค่ะ(nîi khâ)."
Ryan: Both phrases have the same meaning, but the one with "ครับ(khráp)" is used by males, while the other is for females.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "that's right."
Ryan: Can we hear these phrases again? Please repeat after "khruu" Pim.
Pim: "นี่ครับ(nîi khráp)" [pause] "นี่ค่ะ(nîi khâ)" [pause]
Ryan: Next, we have a long phrase.
Pim: "เหตุผลในการมา(hèet-phŏn nai gaan maa)"
Ryan: ""Reason for coming.""
Pim: "เหตุผล(hèet-phŏn)" means ""reason,"" "ใน(nai)" is ""in,"" and "การมา(gaan maa)" is ""the act of coming."" All together, we have "เหตุผลในการมาประเทศไทยคืออะไร(hèet-phŏn nai gaan maa bprà-thêet thai khuue a-rai)," which is ""What is your reason for coming to Thailand?""
Ryan: "มาเที่ยวครับ(maa thîiao khráp)" means ""for travel.""
Pim: Good. I really recommend that you remember as a set phrase ""เหตุผลใน(hèet-phŏn nai)"" because you can replace "การมา(gaan maa)" with any other action in order to give the reason for doing that. For example, "การมาสาย(gaan maa săai)" means ""being late"" or ""coming late."" So how do you ask someone for the reason for being late?
Ryan: "เหตุผลในการมาสายคืออะไร(hèet-phŏn nai gaan maa săai khuue a-rai)" is "What is your reason for being late?"
Pim: Exactly! Let's go to next example. "การไป(gaan bpai)" is ""going."" So "เหตุผลในการไปอเมริกาคืออะไร(hèet-phŏn nai gaan bpai a-mee-ri-gaa khuue a-rai)" means?
Ryan: "What is your reason for going to the United States?"
Pim: That's right!
Ryan: Please repeat our phrase after "khruu" Pim.
Pim: "เหตุผลในการมา(hèet-phŏn nai gaan maa)" [pause]

Lesson focus

Ryan: Let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson, we'll learn about the use of the question word "เท่าไหร่(thâo-rài)," which means ""how much?""
Pim: We can ask ""how much?"" by placing the word "เท่าไหร่(thâo-rài)" at the end of the sentence. For example, "ราคา(raa-khaa)" means ""price,"" so "ราคาเท่าไหร่(raa-khaa thâo-rài)" would mean ""how much is it?"" Here, you can place anything in front of the phrase "ราคาเท่าไหร่(raa-khaa thâo-rài)" to ask for its price. Okay. Ryan, please tell me how to ask for the price of a bus ticket. I will give you a hint that ""bus ticket"" is "ตั๋วรถบัส(dtŭua rót-bát)" in Thai.
Ryan: Umm…is it "ตั๋วรถบัสราคาเท่าไหร่ครับ(dtŭua rót-bát raa-khaa thâo-rài khráp)?"
Pim: That's right! I will give you a useful tip. When you want to ask the price of something but you don't know what it's called in Thai, you can just point at it and then say "นี่ราคาเท่าไหร่(níi raa-khaa thâo-rài)," which is ""how much is this?"" where "นี่(níi)" means ""this."" Actually, you can just say "เท่าไหร่(thâo-rài)," and everyone will understand that you want to ask for the price.
Ryan: Okay, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. ""How much is this?""
Pim: "นี่ราคาเท่าไหร่(níi raa-khaa thâo-rài)" [pause] Now that we already know the word "เท่าไหร่(thâo-rài)" to ask "how much," we can apply it to ask about many things by adding adjectives in front of it. For example, "นาน(naan)" is an adjective that means ""a long time."" So, "นานเท่าไหร่(naan thâo-rài)" means?
Ryan: "นาน(naan)" is "long," and "เท่าไหร่(thâo-rài)" is "how much," so "นานเท่าไหร่(naan thâo-rài)" is ""how long!""
Pim: Good!
Ryan: Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "How long?"
Pim: "นานเท่าไหร่(naan thâo-rài)" [pause] Now, you can just add verbs before "นานเท่าไหร่(naan thâo-rài)" to ask the length of time doing that action. For example, if "ไป(bpai)" means ""to go,"" then "คุณจะไปนานเท่าไหร่(khun jà bpai naan thâo-rài)" is ""how long will you go?"" So, Ryan, if "อยู่(yùu)" is ""to stay,"" then "คุณจะอยู่นานเท่าไหร่(khun jà yùu naan thâo-rài)" means?
Ryan: Okay, let's see if I got it right. I know that "คุณ(khun)" is ""you"" and "อยู่(yùu)" means ""to stay,"" so "คุณจะอยู่นานเท่าไหร่(khun jà yùu naan thâo-rài)" means ""how long will you stay?""
Pim: Great! Other than "นานเท่าไหร่(naan thâo-rài)," which is ""how long,"" there is also "สูงเท่าไหร่(sǔung thâo-rài)," which is ""how tall,"" "หนักเท่าไหร่(nàk thâo-rài)," which is ""how heavy?"" and "ลึกเท่าไหร่(lúek thâo-rài)," which is ""how deep,"" where "สูง(sǔung)," "หนัก(nàk)," and "ลึก(lúek)" mean ""tall,"" ""heavy,"" and ""deep,"" respectively.
Ryan: So, to ask anyone's height, we should say "คุณสูงเท่าไหร่ครับ(khun sǔung thâo-rài khráp)," right?
Pim: That's right!
Ryan: Can we hear the sentence one more time? Listeners, repeat after "khruu" Pim. "How tall are you?"
Pim: "คุณสูงเท่าไหร่(khun sǔung thâo-rài)" [pause]
Ryan: Now, let's review. How would you ask your friend when you want to know how long he or she will stay in Thailand? [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "คุณจะอยู่เมืองไทยนานเท่าไหร่(khun jà yùu muueang thai naan thâo-rài)"
Ryan: That's all for today's lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: "Do you have any questions?"
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: "See you next time!"
