Pim: Why not?
Ryan: Well a can of cola costs 15 baht, right? But I only have a one thousand baht bill. So I'm planning to break the bill before going to เซเว่น(see-ŵen).
Pim: You don't have to worry about that. You won't have trouble getting change at เซเว่น(see-ŵen).
Ryan: Is that so? Then I will go as soon as this lesson is finished. My throat is really dried up.
Pim: Can I go with you? I want to refresh myself there at เซเว่น(see-ŵen).
Ryan: Sure, but refresh yourself at เซเว่น(see-ŵen)? How?
Pim: Today is very hot and you know the air conditioners in เซเว่น(see-ŵen) are usually set really cold.
Ryan: I see.
Pim: All right, onto the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some phrases from this lesson. And the first phrase is?
Pim: ถ้าอย่างนั้น (thâa yàang nán)
Ryan: "In that case" or "so, therefore."
Pim: We use this phrase when we obtain some information or an offer and then want to express the decision based on that information. For example, let's say you are in a situation where you're planning to cook ต้มยำกุ้ง(dtôm-yam-gûng) for your friend. But you hear from her that she doesn't like spicy food, then you may respond by saying ถ้าอย่างนั้นไม่ใส่พริกแล้วกัน (thâa yàang nán mâi sài phrík láaeo gan) which means, "In that case, I won't add any chilies then."
Ryan: Can we hear this phrase again? Please repeat after Khruu Pim.
Pim: ถ้าอย่างนั้น(thâa yàang nán)
Ryan: Let's go to the next phrase.
Pim: ขอ(khǎaw) blah, blah, blah ด้วย(dûuai)
Ryan: I will get blah, blah, blah too.
Pim: The usage of this phrase is simple, ขอ(khǎaw) means, "please give me." And ด้วย(dûuai) means, "also." You can put the name of the thing you want in between these two words to make, "I'll get that thing too."
Ryan: For example, just as the cashier of Seven is ringing up my purchase, I suddenly remember that Khruu Pim told me to buy her a hot dog. So I can tell the store clerk ขอ(khǎaw) hot dog ด้วยครับ(dûuai khráp) which means, "I will get a hot dog too," is that right?
Pim: Okay listeners, repeat after me, ขอ(khǎaw) blah, blah, blah ด้วย(dûuai)
Ryan: I will get blah, blah, blah too. And the last phrase for today is?
Pim: ทั้งหมด(tháng-mòt)
Ryan: In total.
Pim: You can say this phrase for the amount of. For example, price, things, times, and so on in total that you want to announce. For example 10 persons in total is ทั้งหมดสิบคน(tháng-mòt sìp khon) where สิบ(sìp) means "ten" and คน(khon) is a classifier used with humans.
Ryan: Listeners, please repeat after Khruu Pim.
Pim: ทั้งหมด(tháng-mòt)

Lesson focus

Ryan: Okay. Let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson we'll learn more about how to ask for the price.
Pim: ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ) meaning "yes." In the grammar section of the tenth lesson, we learned that we can place the phrase ราคาเท่าไหร่(raa-khaa thâo-rài) which means, "how much is it" behind an item to ask for its price. In this lesson, we'll learn how to ask for the price per item when you want to buy several of the same item.
Ryan: Do you mean, for example, when we want to buy five apples and want to know how much each one is?
Pim: Exactly. In this case we'll use the word ละ(lá) which mean "per." And we'll use a classifier because we are talking about the price per unit here. We will put a classifier and ละ after the item we want to know the price per item of. And then follow that with a phrase ราคาเท่าไหร่(raa-khaa thâo-rài). For example apple is แอปเปิ้ล(áep-bpôen) in Thai. And the classifier for apple is ลูก(lûuk). Ryan please try to ask what is the price of on apple?
Ryan: แอปเปิ้ลลูกละราคาเท่าไหร่ครับ(áep-bpôen lûuk lá raa-khaa thâo-rài khráp)
Pim: That's right. Listeners, please repeat the sentence after me, แอปเปิ้ลลูกละราคาเท่าไหร่(áep-bpôen lûuk lá raa-khaa thâo-rài khráp) Okay, let's practice more. Try to recall all the classifiers we learned in the last lesson. Assume that you're at the mall and you want to buy two iPods. Please ask "What is the price of one iPad?"
Ryan: Okay, let me think. I know that an iPod is an electronic device. So its classifier is เครื่อง(khrûueang) So the sentence should be iPod เครื่องละราคาเท่าไหร่ครับ(khrûueang lá raa-khaa thâo-rài khráp)
Pim: That's perfect. Actually because everybody knows that we are talking about the price, omitting the word ราคา(raa-khaa) meaning "price" will make you sound more like a native.
Ryan: So the sentence will become iPod เครื่องละเท่าไหร่ครับ(khrûueang lá thâo-rài khráp) right?
Pim: That's right. Let's try some more examples. How would you ask what is the price of socks per pair?
Ryan: I remember that socks is ถุงเท้า(thŭng-tháao) in Thai and because socks come into pair, we should use คู่(khûu) as its classifier. So I should say ถุงเท้าคู่ละเท่าไหร่ครับ(thŭng-tháao khûu lá thâo-rài khráp)
Pim: Good job. Listeners, please repeat the sentence after me, ถุงเท้าคู่ละเท่าไหร่(thŭng-tháao khûu lá thâo-rài). Next, I'll give you a very important tip when you want to ask the price per item of something, but you don't know what it's called in Thai. You can point at it and use นี่(nîi) meaning "this" instead of saying its name.
Ryan: What about the classifier?
Pim: Do you remember our general classifier อัน(an) from the last lesson? Whenever you don't know which classifier should be used, you can just use อัน(an). So when you want to ask the price per item of something you don't know, how would you ask?
Ryan: นี่อันละเท่าไหร่ครับ(nîi an lá thâo-rài khráp)
Pim: Good. Listeners, please repeat the sentence after me, นี่อันละเท่าไหร่(nîi an lá thâo-rài)
Ryan: Now, let's review. Assume that you're going to buy five glasses of ice coffee for yourself and your colleagues, how would you ask the café clerk, what is the price per glass? Khruu Pim, the answer is?
Pim: The classifier for glasses is แก้ว(gâaeo). Ice coffee is กาแฟเย็น(gaa-faae yen) in Thai. So the sentence should be กาแฟเย็นแก้วละเท่าไหร่(gaa-faae yen gâaeo lá thâo-rài).
Ryan: That's all for today's lesson.
Pim: มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)
Ryan: Do you have any questions?
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)
