"เอาล่ะค่ะไปฟังบทสนทนากันเลยดีกว่า(ao lâ khâ bpai fang bòt sŏn-thá-naa gan looei dii gwàa)" Let's listen to the conversation!

Ryan: Ah, a rainy day, huh?
พนักงานต้อนรับ: ใช่ค่ะ (châi khâ)
Ryan: Yes.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Pim: "สวัสดีค่ะ ไรอัน(sà-wàt-dii khâ rai-ân)," "You are utterly soaked!" What happened?
Ryan: "สวัสดีครับครูพิม(sà-wàt-dii khráp khruu phim)," "Well it's raining so hard." I got caught outside when I was coming back from lunch.
Pim: You didn't bring an umbrella with you? I always tell you to bring an umbrella with you during this time of year.
Ryan: Yeah, I know it's the rainy season, but when I left the house this morning there was a clear blue sky. And when I went out for lunch, there were just a few big, fluffy, white clouds. I thought I'd be okay. But I forgot how quickly a rainstorm can appear. By the time I finished lunch, the sky was getting really dark. Then bam! Right as I was leaving the restaurant, it started coming down really heavy like a waterfall.
Pim: Oh, poor Ryan! Then you should have gone back home and changed!
Ryan: I'm fine. Today's quite hot, so I think my clothes will dry very soon.
Pim: Okay, if you say so.
Ryan: Yeah, now on to the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first word is?
Pim: "เหรอ(rǒoe)"
Ryan: "Really" or "is that so?"
Pim: This word can be used when we obtain some information that we didn't expect and want to show surprise or to seek confirmation. The usage of "เหรอ(rǒoe)" is very similar to that of "really" or "is that so?" in English.
Ryan: Can we hear this word again? Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Really" or "is that so?"
Pim: "เหรอ(rǒoe)" [pause].
Ryan: The next word is?
Pim: "วันนี้(wan-níi)"
Ryan: "Today."
Pim: And there are two related words that should be learned together. They are "พรุ่งนี้(phrûng-níi)," which is "tomorrow," and "เมื่อวานนี้(mûuea-waan-níi)," which is "yesterday."
Ryan: Okay, listeners. Please repeat these three words after "khruu" Pim. "Today," "tomorrow," and "yesterday."
Pim: "วันนี้(wan-níi)" [pause], "พรุ่งนี้(phrûng-níi)" [pause], and "เมื่อวานนี้(mûuea-waan-níi)" [pause].
Ryan: Next, we have a couple of phrases.
Pim: "ตอนเช้า(dtaawn-cháao)"
Ryan: "In the morning."
Pim: "ตอนบ่าย(dtaawn-bàai)"
Ryan: "In the afternoon."
Pim: You can see that both phrases contain the word "ตอน(dtaawn)," which means "part." So, as we can assume, every phrase that indicates a part of the day contains this word. For example, "ตอนสาย(dtaawn săai)" is "late in the morning," "ตอนเย็น(dtaawn yen)" is "in the evening," "ตอนค่ำ" is "early at night," and "ตอนดึก(dtaawn dùek)" is "late at night."
Ryan: Please repeat these phrases after "khruu" Pim "In the morning" and "in the afternoon."
Pim: "ตอนเช้า(dtaawn-cháao)" [pause] "ตอนบ่าย(dtaawn-bàai)" [pause]

Lesson focus

Ryan: Okay, let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson, we'll learn how to use the question "เป็นอย่างไร," meaning "how is," to ask about the condition of things, including the weather.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "yes." The phrase "เป็นอย่างไร(bpen yàang rai)" can be placed after whatever you want to ask about. For example, you could very likely be asked by Thai people when you come to Thailand "ประเทศไทยเป็นอย่างไร(bprà-thêet thai bpen yàang rai)," which means?
Ryan: "How's Thailand?"
Pim: That's right. How would you ask "How is the movie?" I will tell you that "movie" is "หนัง(năng)" in Thai.
Ryan: So I should say "หนังเป็นอย่างไรครับ(năng bpen yàang rai khráp)."
Pim: Very good.
Ryan: Can we hear these sentences one more time? Listeners, repeat after "khruu" Pim… "How's Thailand?" and "How's the movie?"
Pim: "ประเทศไทยเป็นอย่างไร(bprà-thêet thai bpen yàang rai)" [pause] "หนังเป็นอย่างไร(năng bpen yàang rai)" [pause]. The question phrase "เป็นอย่างไร(bpen yàang rai)" can also be used to ask what the weather is like. Ryan, could you tell me how you would ask "What is the weather like?" "อากาศ(aa-gàat)" is "weather."
Ryan: Well, I would say "อากาศเป็นอย่างไรครับ(aa-gàat bpen yàang rai khráp)."
Pim: Okay. And you can add words to the front of the sentence to specify a period of time and a place. For example, "พรุ่งนี้(phrûng-níi)" is "tomorrow," and "กรุงเทพฯ(grung-thêep)" is "Bangkok." How would you ask about the weather in Bangkok tomorrow?
Ryan: Is it "พรุ่งนี้อากาศที่กรุงเทพฯเป็นอย่างไรครับ(phrûng-níi aa-gàat thîi grung-thêep bpen yàang rai khráp)?"
Pim: Very good.
Ryan: Now, let me try to make a sentence. From the vocabulary usage section, we learned that "ตอนบ่าย(dtaawn-bàai)" means "in the afternoon." So if I want to ask "What is the weather like in Chiangmai this afternoon?" I should say "ตอนบ่ายอากาศที่เชียงใหม่เป็นอย่างไรครับ(dtaawn-bàai aa-gàat thîi chiiang-mài bpen yàang rai khráp)."
Pim: Exactly! Now let's learn how to describe the condition of the weather to respond to the sentence "อากาศเป็นอย่างไร(aa-gàat bpen yàang rai)." The weather can usually be described with short sentences or phrases, such as "ฝนตก(fǒn-dtòk)…"
Ryan: "rainy,"
Pim: "แดดออก(dàaet-àawk)"
Ryan: "sunny,"
Pim: "อากาศร้อน(aa-gàat ráawn)"
Ryan: "hot weather,"
Pim: "อากาศหนาว(aa-gàat năao)"
Ryan: "cold weather," and finally...
Pim: "อากาศดี(aa-gàat dii)"
Ryan: "good weather." Now, let's review. Listeners, how would you ask "What's the weather in London going to be like tomorrow"? [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "พรุ่งนี้อากาศที่ลอนดอนเป็นอย่างไร(phrûng-níi aa-gàat thîi lawn-dawn bpen yàang rai)"
Ryan: Okay, that's all for today's lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: "Do you have any questions?"
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: See you next time!
