POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Pim: Hey, Ryan, are you free on Sunday?
Ryan: Yes!
Pim: Great! Okay. Do you still remember my ex-boss we met at Siam Square last Saturday?
Ryan: Sure.
Pim: Okay. The thing is, she called me yesterday and asked if you and I would like to join her on a trip to Ayutthaya!
Ryan: Really? Sure. Please tell her that I'd love to!
Pim: Great! And you know what? She also said that on the way back she'd like to take us to a talk-of-the-town restaurant in Ayutthaya. She said that the food is fantastic there and the restaurant itself is located by the Chao Phraya River. It's going to be the most relaxing meal ever. You know, having dinner while enjoying the beautiful night view of the river.
Ryan: That sounds terrific! But it also sounds like the kind of restaurant that might be a bit out of my budget.
Pim: Ha ha…no worries! It's likely that my ex-boss will be the one who pays for us all!
Ryan: What? Why's that?
Pim: Okay. In Thai culture, it's really common for the person holding the highest rank to pay for the entire group. So don't worry about it and just get ready for the trip. Oh…don't forget to bring a hat and sunglasses with you. I think it's going to be really hot there.
Ryan: Okay. I'm really looking forward to that. Now, on to the vocabulary. Let's take a look at the vocabulary and phrase list for this lesson.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is?
Pim: "ไชโย(chai-yoo)"
Ryan: "Cheers!" Now, Thais also say "ดื่ม(dùuem)" and "ชน(chon)" when making a toast.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "right!" "ดื่ม(dùuem)" and "ชน(chon)" are actions of drinking and clanking glasses together respectively. However, "ดื่ม(dùuem)" and "ชน(chon)" are common in casual conversations while "ไชโย(chai-yoo)" is frequently used in formal situations like in wedding ceremonies, for example.
Ryan: Okay. Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Cheers!"
Pim: "ไชโย(chai-yoo)" [pause]
Ryan: The next phrase is?
Pim: "ทานกันเลย(thaan gan looei)"
Ryan: "Let's eat!" "กินกันเลย(gin gan looei)" also means "Let's eat!" and is a formal expression used within a family or among friends. However, when the speaker needs to be even more polite, such as when talking to a stranger or a business partner, "ทานกันเลย(thaan gan looei)" is more preferable. Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Let's eat!"
Pim: "ทานกันเลย(thaan gan looei)" [pause]
Ryan: And the last phrase of today's lesson is?
Pim: "ลองนี่สิ(laawng nîi sì)"
Ryan: "Try this!" "ลอง(laawng)" is the verb "to try," and "นี่(nîi)," with a falling tone, is the pronoun "this," this is followed by "สิ(sì)" with a low tone.
Pim: Right! The key word of this phrase is the word "สิ(sì)." "สิ(sì)" is a particle that is placed after verbs to add emphasis to commands or suggestions.

Lesson focus

Ryan: Okay. Before we move to the grammar section to talk more about the word "สิ(sì)," can we hear the phrase again, "khruu" Pim? "Try this!"
Pim: "ลองนี่สิ(laawng nîi sì)!" [pause]
Ryan: Okay. Let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson, we'll focus on the use of the particle "สิ(sì)."
Pim: Right. "สิ(sì)" is a particle that is placed after verbs to give a command or suggestion to someone to do something for you. For example, "ร้องเพลง(ráawng phleeng)" is "to sing," so "ร้องเพลงสิ(ráawng phleeng sì)" is?
Ryan: Literally, it means "Sing!" but what really is meant is "Why don't you sing?" if it's a suggestion or "Sing it now!" if it's a command. Okay. Please repeat after "khruu" Pim, "Why don't you sing?" or "Sing right now!"
Pim: "ร้องเพลงสิ(ráawng phleeng sì)" [pause] Okay. Ryan, let's practice more. "เดิน(dooen)" is "to walk," so "Why don't you walk?" or "Walk right now!" is?
Ryan: "เดินสิ(dooen sì)"
Pim: Very good. Next, "นั่ง(nâng)" is "to sit," so "Why don't you sit?" or "Sit right now!" is?
Ryan: "นั่งสิ(nâng sì)"
Pim: Excellent! Now, you can make your commands or suggestions sound softer by adding "ครับ" for males or "คะ(khá)," high tone, for females after the word "สิ(sì)," like "เดินสิคะ(dooen sì khá)" or "นั่งสิคะ(nâng sì khá)."
Ryan: Okay. Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Why don't you walk?" or "Walk right now!"
Pim: "เดินสิคะ(dooen sì khá)" [pause]
Ryan: "Why don't you sit?" or "Sit right now!"
Pim: "นั่งสิคะ(nâng sì khá)" [pause]
Ryan: "Khruu" Pim, what if there is an object after the verb, like "ดื่มน้ำ(dùuem náam)," "to drink water." Where should I place the word "สิ(sì)" then?
Pim: Okay. If a verb ever needs an object or an adverb, just remember to place the word "สิ" at the end of the sentence. For example, "ดื่มน้ำ(dùuem náam)" is "to drink water," so "Why don't you drink water?" is?
Ryan: "ดื่มน้ำสิครับ(dùuem náam sì khráp)"
Pim: Very good! Okay. Let's practice a bit more. "ทาน(thaan)" is "to eat," and "แซนด์วิช(saaen-wít)" is "sandwich," so "Why don't you eat a sandwich?" is?
Ryan: "ทานแซนด์วิชสิครับ(thaan saaen-wít sì khráp)"
Pim: Excellent!
Ryan: Okay. Listeners, now, it's time for review! So, how would you say "Why don't you go by bus?" Okay. I'll give you a hint, "to go" is" ไป(bpai)" and "by bus" is "โดยรถบัส(dooi rót bát)" [pause]. "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "ไปโดยรถบัสสิครับ(bpai dooi rót bát sì khráp)" for males or "ไปโดยรถบัสสิคะ(bpai dooi rót bát sì khá)" for females.
Ryan: Okay. That's all for this lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: "Do you have any questions?"
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: See you next time.
