POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan: "สวัสดีครับครูพิม(sà-wàt-dii khráp khruu phim)."
Pim: "สวัสดีค่ะไรอัน(sà-wàt-dii khâ rai-ân)" Oh, by the way, have you decided on your destination for the long holiday that's coming up yet?
Ryan: I'm thinking of going to Chiang Mai this time. Any recommendations?
Pim: Great choice! Okay, If you go to Chiang Mai, you need to visit a temple called "Wat Phra That Doi Suthep," which is the most important and famous Chiang Mai landmark. You know, the people of Chiang Mai even say something like "You haven't really gone to Chiang Mai unless you've been to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep." And the temple also allows you a panoramic view of Chiang Mai city since it is situated 3,520 feet above sea level!
Ryan: Very interesting! I have to go there. Now…what about the food? Is there any local food I should try?
Pim: Of course! There are a lot of delicious local dishes there. Anyway, what I'd like to recommend to you is a dish called "Khao Soi." It's one of the most popular dishes, and trust me, it tastes so good!
Ryan: Really? What's it like?
Pim: "Khao Soi" is made with flat egg noodles served in rich coconut-milk based curry with crispy egg noodles on top. And ingredients like black-chili paste, pickled cabbage, lime juice, and shallots are also served with the dish so that you can adjust it to your own taste.
Ryan: Oh, that sounds tasty. Let's do this lesson now so I can go eat afterwards. I got really hungry just now hearing your description of "khao soi."
Pim: Okay. Let's move on to the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. First we have a phrase.
Pim: "แน่ใจ(nâae-jai)"
Ryan: "To feel certain" or "to feel sure."
Pim: This phrase is used to express that you are sure of something. On the other hand, if you are not sure of that, you can add "ไม่(mâi)" in front of the phrase to negate it and form "ไม่แน่ใจ(mâi nâae-jai)." These phrases can be used easily. You just place them after the subject. Ryan, when you are sure of something, what would you say?
Ryan: "ผมแน่ใจครับ(phŏm nâae-jai khráp)"
Pim: That's right!
Ryan: Can we hear this phrase again? Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Feel sure"
Pim: "แน่ใจ(nâae-jai)" [pause]
Ryan: Next, we have a word.
Pim: "แต่(dtàae)"
Ryan: "But."
Pim: "แต่(dtàae)" is a conjunction meaning "but" in English. It is used to link two conflicting sentences. "แต่(dtàae)" is placed between the two sentences. For example, "อยากทานสเต็ก(yàak thaan sà-dtêk)" means "want to eat steak," and "ไม่มีเงิน(mâi mii ngoen)" means "have no money." Ryan, how would you say "I want to eat steak, but I have no money?"
Ryan: "ผมอยากทานสเต็กแต่ผมไม่มีเงิน(phŏm yàak thaan sà-dtêk dtàae phŏm mâi mii ngoen)," right?
Pim: Very good! Sometimes "แต่(dtàae)" can also be used to mean "only." For example, "ผลไม้(phŏn-lá-máai)" means "fruit," so "ดิฉันทานแต่ผลไม้(dì-chăn thaan dtàae phŏn-lá-máai)" means "I eat only fruit." We will learn about this usage of "แต่(dtàae)" in more details in our future lessons.
Ryan: Listeners, please repeat the sentence after "khruu" Pim. "I want to eat steak, but I have no money."
Pim: "ดิฉันอยากทานสเต็กแต่ดิฉันไม่มีเงิน(dì-chăn yàak thaan sà-dtêk dtàae dì-chăn mâi mii ngoen)" [pause]

Lesson focus

Ryan: Okay, let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson, we'll learn how to say that you want to do something in Thai.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ), "right." We will make use of the verb "อยาก(yàak)," meaning "to want." When you want to express that you want to do any verb, you can just place that verb after "อยาก(yàak)." For example, "นอน(naawn)" means "to sleep," so "ดิฉันอยากนอน(dì-chăn yàak naawn)" means?
Ryan: "I want to sleep."
Pim: Very good, Ryan! Let's have some more examples. "ดื่ม(dùuem)" means "to drink," and "โค้ก(khóok)" means "Coke." How would you say "I want to drink Coke?"
Ryan: "ผมอยากดื่มโค้ก(phŏm yàak dùuem khóok)"
Pim: Good! "เจอ(jooe)" means "to meet," and "พรุ่งนี้(phrûng-níi)" means "tomorrow." How would you say "I want to meet you tomorrow?"
Ryan: "ผมอยากเจอคุณวันพรุ่งนี้(phŏm yàak jooe khun wan phrûng-níi)"
Pim: Excellent!
Ryan: Okay, listeners. Let's repeat the sentence after "khruu" Pim. "I want to meet you tomorrow."
Pim: "ดิฉันอยากเจอคุณวันพรุ่งนี้(dì-chăn yàak jooe khun wan phrûng-níi)" [pause] Okay. Now, just like any other verbs we've learned in previous lessons, when we want to make a yes or no question, we can just add the question word "ไหม(mái)" at the end of the sentence. For example, Ryan, try to create a sentence to ask me whether I want to go to Siam Square or not.
Ryan: Well, I know that the verb "to go" is "ไป(bpai)." So the sentence should be "คุณอยากไปสยามสแควร์ไหมครับ(khun yàak bpai sà-yăam-sà-khwaae mái khráp)"
Pim: Good job! Again, when we want to negate any verb, what should you do?
Ryan: That so easy! I would just add "ไม่(mâi)" in front of the verb. So "do not want to" would be "ไม่อยาก(mâi yàak)," right?
Pim: Very good! Let's have an example. "ซื้อ(súue)" means "to buy," and "กระทะ(grà-thá)" means "a pan." How would you say "Sarah doesn't want to buy a pan?"
Ryan: "ซาร่าไม่อยากซื้อกระทะ(saa-râa mâi yàak súue grà-thá)"
Pim: That's right! Now, we'll learn about another verb, "อาจจะ(àat-jà)," meaning "might" or "maybe." We already learned that "จะ(jà)," meaning "will," is used when asking about the future and when giving statements where you are certain about what is going to happen. But "อาจจะ(àat-jà)" is used instead when you are uncertain of the likelihood of a future event occurring.
Ryan: Is the usage of "อาจจะ(àat-jà)" the same as that of "จะ(jà)," in which it is placed in front of the verb?
Pim: Yes, it is! For example, "แต่งงาน(dtàeng-ngaan)" means "to get married," and "ปีหน้า(bpii nâa)" means "next year." "ดิฉันอาจจะแต่งงานปีหน้า(dì-chăn àat-jà dtàeng-ngaan bpii nâa)" means "I might get married next year."
Ryan: Okay, listeners. Let's repeat the sentence after "khruu" Pim. "I might get married next year."
Pim: "ดิฉันอาจจะแต่งงานปีหน้า(dì-chăn àat-jà dtàeng-ngaan bpii nâa)" [pause]
Ryan: Now, let's review. Listeners, how would you say "I want to work in Thailand?" I'll give you the hint that "to work" is "ทำงาน(tham-ngaan)." [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "ดิฉันอยากทำงานในเมืองไทย(dì-chăn yàak tham-ngaan nai muueang thai)"
Ryan: Next, how would you say "I might go back to the States next month?" "To go back" is "กลับไป(glàp bpai)," and "next month" is "เดือนหน้า(duuean nâa)." [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "ดิฉันอาจจะกลับไปอเมริกาเดือนหน้า(dì-chăn àat-jà glàp bpai a-mee-rí-gaa duuean nâa)"
Ryan: Okay, that's all for today's lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: "Do you have any questions?"
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: See you next time.
