Ryan:So, "khruu" Pim, where does this conversation take place?
Pim:"บนเครื่องบินค่ะ(bon khrûueang-bin khâ)," which is "on the airplane." "คุณสตีฟยังคงคุยกับคุณสุภาณีผู้หญิงที่นั่งข้างๆ(khun sà-dtíip yang khong khui gàp khun sù-phaa-nii phûu-yĭng thîi nâng khâang khâang)" Steve is still talking with "Khun" Supanee, the lady sitting next to him. "เอาล่ะค่ะ ไปฟังบทสนทนากันเลยดีกว่า(ao lâ khâ bpai fang bòt sŏn-thá-naa gan looei dii gwàa)" "Let’s listen to the conversation!"
DIALOGUES
Ryan: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Ryan: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
สตีฟ:คุณสุภาณีทำงานอะไรครับ (khun sù-phaa-nii tham-ngaan à-rai khráp)
Ryan:Ms. Supanee, what is your occupation?
สุภาณี:ดิฉันเป็นพนักงานธนาคารค่ะ แล้วคุณสตีฟล่ะคะ (dì-chǎn bpen phá-nák-ngaan thá-naa-khaan khâ. láaeo khun sà-dtíip lâ khá)
Ryan:I am a bank staff member, and you?
สตีฟ:ผมเป็นวิศวกรครับ คุณสุภาณีพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหมครับ (phǒm bpen wít-sà-wá-gaawn khráp. khun sù-phaa-nii phûut phaa-sǎa ang-grìt dâai máii khráp)
Ryan:I am an engineer. Ms. Supanee, can you speak English?
สุภาณี:ได้นิดหน่อยค่ะ (dâai nít-nàuy khâ)
Ryan:Yes, a little bit.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Pim:"สวัสดีเจ้า(sà-wàt-dii jâo)"
Ryan:"สวัสดีเจ้า(sà-wàt-dii jâo)?" That sounds like "hello" in Thai, but there’s something different at the end, isn’t there? "เจ้า(jâo)"…what does it mean?
Pim:"เจ้า(jâo)" is "ภาษาเหนือ(phaa-săa nǔuea)" northern dialect. It’s the same as "ค่ะ(khâ)," a polite particle for females.
Ryan:Oh…so you mean people speak differently in some parts of Thailand?
Pim:Ha ha…This might surprise you, but actually we have four main dialects including this one I’m teaching, the central one, which is called "ภาษากลาง(phaa-săa glaang)" and is also Thailand’s official language.
Ryan:Very interesting! So, what are the rest?
Pim:"ภาษาอีสาน(phaa-săa ii-săan)" is the "northeast dialect" and "ภาษาใต้(phaa-săa dtâai)" is the "southern dialect."
Ryan:Okay. This is just for fun. Do you know how northeast people say "delicious?"
Pim:Of course! It’s "แซ่บอีหลี(sâep ii-lǐi)!" "Delicious!"
Ryan:"แซ่บอีหลี(sâep ii-lǐi)!" Okay, on to our vocabulary.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ryan:Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim:The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
Ryan:Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first word is?
Pim:"นิดหน่อย(nít-nàuy)"
Ryan:"a little bit."
Pim:Anyway, "เล็กน้อย(lék náauy)" also means "a little bit," so when you want to say "a little bit," you can either use "นิดหน่อย(nít-nàuy)" or "เล็กน้อย(lék náauy)."
Ryan:Can we hear these two words again? Okay, please repeat after "khruu" Pim.
Pim:"นิดหน่อย(nít-nàuy)" [pause] "เล็กน้อย(lék náauy)" [pause]
Ryan:The next word is?
Pim:"พนักงาน(phá-nák-ngaan)"
Ryan:"Staff." Some names of occupations are formed by this word พนักงาน(phá-nák-ngaan), then followed by the nature of the job. For example, "receptionist" is "พนักงานต้อนรับ(phá-nák-ngaan dtâawn-ráp)," where "ต้อนรับ(dtâawn-ráp)" means "to receive" or "to welcome." Please repeat after "khruu" Pim.
Pim:"พนักงานต้อนรับ(phá-nák-ngaan dtâawn-ráp)"
Ryan:[pause] Can you please give us some more of the names of occupations starting with the word "พนักงาน(phá-nák-ngaan)?"
Pim:"ได้เลยค่ะ(dâai looei khâ)" Sure! "Salesman," "chauffeur," and "waiter" (or "waitress") are also occupations that follow the rule above.
Ryan:Okay, listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Salesman."
Pim:"พนักงานขาย(phá-nák-ngaan khăai)"
Ryan:[pause] "Chauffeur"
Pim:"พนักงานขับรถ(phá-nák-ngaan khàp rót)"
Ryan:[pause] "waiter" or "waitress"
Pim:"พนักงานเสิร์ฟ(phá-nák-ngaan sòoep)"
Ryan:Still, there are many cases that names of occupations do not begin with the word "พนักงาน(phá-nák-ngaan)," right? Like our friend Steve’s occupation.
Pim:"ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)" "Right!" Some of them are formed by different rules like those ending with the word "-กร(-gaawn)," such as "วิศวกร(wít-sà-wá-gaawn)," which means "engineer," or มัณฑนากร(man-thá-naa-gaawn), which means "interior designer." And there are also specific names that do not follow any rules, such as "แพทย์(phâaet)," which means "doctor," "ทนาย(thá-naai)," which means "lawyer," or "ล่าม(lâam)," which means "interpreter," for example.
Ryan:Okay, let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ryan:In this lesson, we’ll learn how to use the phrase "คุณ(khun) (blah blah blah) ได้ไหม(dâai mái)?" which can either mean "Can you (blah blah blah)?" or "Are you able to (blah blah blah)?" or "Is it possible to (blah blah blah)?"
Pim:Right! The way to use this phrase is very simple. You just place the verb between the subject and the word "ได้ไหม(dâai mái)." For example, "พูดภาษาไทย(phûut phaa-săa thai dâai mái)" is "to speak Thai." So "คุณพูดภาษาไทยได้ไหม(khun phûut phaa-săa thai dâai mái)" means?
Ryan:"Can you speak Thai?" Okay. Repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Can you speak Thai?"
Pim:"คุณพูดภาษาไทยได้ไหม(khun phûut phaa-săa thai dâai mái)" [pause]
Ryan:So, Pim, how do you say "Can you eat spicy food?"
Pim:"คุณทานเผ็ดได้ไหม(khun thaan phèt dâai mái)"
Ryan:And "Can you drive?" is?
Pim:"คุณขับรถได้ไหม(khun khàp rót dâai mái)"
Ryan:And what is "Can you translate Thai to English?"
Pim:"คุณแปลภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษได้ไหม(khun bplaae phaa-săa thai bpen phaa-săa ang-grìt dâai mái)"
Ryan:How would you respond to this type of question?
Pim:Okay. "Yes, I can" is "ได้ครับ(dâai khráp)" or "ได้ค่ะ(dâai khâ)" while "No, I cannot" is "ไม่ได้ครับ(mâi dâai khráp)" or "ไม่ได้ค่ะ(mâi dâai khâ)."
Ryan:And you can also place an adverb after the word "ได้(dâai)" to show the degree of your ability. Like "Yes, a little bit."
Pim:"ได้นิดหน่อยค่ะ(dâai nít-nàuy khâ)"
Ryan:Okay, let’s go back to the word "ได้ไหม(dâai mái)."
Pim:I’d like to make one important point here. Actually, the word "ได้ไหม(dâai mái)" is not only used to ask about a person’s ability. It can also be used to ask for permission. For example, "นั่งตรงนี้(nâng dtrong nií)" is "to sit here," so "ขอดิฉันนั่งตรงนี้ได้ไหม(khǎaw dì-chăn nâng dtrong nií dâai mái)" is?
Ryan:"Can I sit here?"
Pim:Here it is okay to omit the subject by saying "ขอนั่งตรงนี้ได้ไหม(khǎaw nâng dtrong nií dâai mái)."
Ryan:Okay, please repeat after "khruu" Pim…"Can I sit here?"
Pim:"ขอนั่งตรงนี้ได้ไหม(khǎaw nâng dtrong nií dâai mái)"
Ryan:[pause] So, how would you say "Can I take a picture?"
Pim:"ขอถ่ายรูปได้ไหม(khǎaw thàai-rûup dâai mái)"
Ryan:[pause] Okay, now it’s time to review! Think of what you would say in this situation… Pretend you are at a restaurant with a young Thai lady. What would you say if you want to know whether she can eat spicy food? [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim:"คุณทานเผ็ดได้ไหม(khun thaan phèt dâai mái)"
Ryan:Okay. That’s all for this lesson.
Pim:"มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan:"Do you have any questions?"
Pim:If you do, please ask us in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan:See you next time!
