Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Thai Top Words. I’m Jay and today, we will be doing 10 must know math words. Okay, let’s begin!
1. วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) “math”
Okay, the first word of today is วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) “math”.
ฉันชอบวิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (chăn châawp wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) “I like math.”
In the dictionary, if you search on the Thai dictionary, it would say วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat) as the pronunciation, but I often hear people say วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-sàat). I think it’s wrong, but it’s something that people like get used to saying in daily life, you know what I mean? Like in daily life, you can say, วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít--sàat). If you want it to be correct then it’s always วิชาคณิตศาสตร์ (wí-chaa khá-nít-dtà-sàat).
2. ตัวเลข (dtuua leek) “number”
ตัวเลขไทยต่างจากตัวเลขอารบิก (dtuua lêek thai dtàang jàak dtuua lêek aa-rá-bìk) “Thai numbers are different from Arabic numbers.”
I think everyone, every country use like 1, 2, 3, you know, but in Thailand, we have two ways of writing numbers. First is the Arabic number which is the numbers that are very known, and the second way of writing it is Thai numbers. So this Thai number is not as popular as Arabic numbers even though it’s used in Thailand too, but it is often used in formal documents like in school sometimes on the textbook.
3. ครึ่ง (khrûeng) “half”
เขาแบ่งขนมให้ฉันครึ่งนึง (khăo bàaeng khà-nŏm hâi chăn khrûeng nueng) “He gave half of the snack to me.”
Nice.
4. ร้อยละ (ráauy lá) “percent”
ร้อยละ 50 ของชั้นเรียนเป็นนักเรียนชาย (ráauy lá hâa sìp khǎawng chán riian bpen nák riian chaai) “50% of the class are male students.”
If you want to report it to like 50%, you could say ห้าสิบเปอร์เซ็นต์ (hâa sìp bpooe-sen) or ร้อยละห้าสิบ (ráauy lá hâa sìp), but I recommend you to use the word “percent.” It’s more popular I would say, to use.
5. คู่ (khûu) “even”
เลขคู่หารด้วย 2 ลงตัว (lêek khûu hăan dûuai sǎawng long dtuua) “Even numbers can divide by 2.”
Right? 2, 4, 6, 8 and it goes on, okay. This word, คู่ (khûu) or “even”, has another meaning in Thai too. It means “a pair”.
6. คี่ (khîi) “odd”
เลข 3 เป็นเลขคี่ (lêek sǎam bpen lêek khîi) “3 is an odd number.”
7. คำนวณ (kham-nuuan) “to calculate”
แม่กำลังคำนวณค่าใช้จ่าย (mâae gam-lang kham-nuuan khâa chái jàai) “Mom is calculating the expenses.”
8. บวก (bùuak) “plus”
1 บวก 1 เป็น 2 (nùeng bùuak nùeng bpen sǎawng) “1 plus 1 is 2.”
Okay this sentence, actually, I was reciting it so often when I was in private school...1 บวก 1 เป็น 2 (nùeng bùuak nùeng bpen sǎawng), 2 บวก 2 เป็น 4 (sǎawng bùuak sǎawng bpen sìi), 3 บวก 3 เป็น 6 (sǎm bùuak sǎm bpen sìi), “1 plus 1 is 2.”, “2 plus 2 is 4.”, 3 plus 3 is 6.”, okay.
9. ลบ (lóp) “minus”
1 ลบ 1 เป็น 0 (nùeng lóp nùeng bpen sǔun) “1 minus 1 is 0.”
10. เท่ากับ (thâo gàp) “to be equal to”
1 ไม่เท่ากับ 2 (nùeng mâi thâo gàp sǎawng) “1 is not equal to 2.”
Actually the first word, เท่า (thâo), literally means “equal” and กับ (gàp) means “with/to” so combining it would be “equal to”. This word is often used in like mathematics and also, it’s also used in like comparison when you compare two different things. Let’s say that my mom is taller than me and I’m a bit shorter than her, then I will say that my height is not equal to my mom. I can say, ส่วนสูงของฉันไม่เท่ากับส่วนสูงของแม่ (sùuan sǔung khǎawng chăn mâi thâo gàp sùuan sǔung khǎawng mâae) “My height is not equal to my mom’s height.”
Thank you for watching! Today, we did 10 must know math words. Okay, let me ask you a few questions. What is 2 คูณ 2 (sǎawng khuun sǎawng)? Tic, tac, tic, tac, สี่ (sìi). 2 multiplied by 2 is 4. How about, 3 บวก 1 เท่ากับเท่าไหร่คะ (sǎm bùuak nùeng thâo gàp thâo rài khá)? It’s also 4! 3 plus 1 is equal to 4.
