Hi everyone, welcome back to Thai top words. I am Jay and today, we will be doing Top 10 Life Events You Should Be Able to Talk About in Thai.
Okay. Let’s get started.
1. เกิด (gòoet) "to be born"
ฉันเกิดเดือนธันวาคม (chăn gooèt duuean than-waa-khom) "ผมเกิดในเดือนธันวาคม"
“I was born in December.” How about you guys?
If you want to ask when were you born, you use this question.
คุณเกิดเมื่อไหร่ (khun gòoet mûuea rài ) “When were you born?”
2. จบการศึกษา (jòp gaan-sùek-sǎa) "graduate"
หลังจบการศึกษา ฉันจะเที่ยวรอบโลกหนึ่งปี (lăng jòp gaan-sùek-sǎa chăn jà thîio râawp lôok nùeng bpii) "หลังจากที่ผมจบการศึกษาผมจะเดินทางไปทั่วโลกเป็นเวลาหนึ่งปี"
“When I graduate, I will travel the world for one year.” Awesome. I always want to travel the world, you know. Yeah. I mean, but I didn’t do that when I graduated. So if you have a chance, then why not.
3. ได้งาน (dâai ngaan) "get a job"
เขาได้งานที่บริษัทใหญ่ (khăo dâi ngaan thîi baaw-rí-sàt yài) "เขามีงานที่เป็น บริษัท ขนาดใหญ่"
“He got a job at a big company.”
Yeah, I used to want to get a job in a big company but then when I get more experience, I feel like big companies or small companies are quite the same. Yeah. Well, about this word, it’s like if you mean you got a job, like you were offered a job, you can use this word ได้งาน (dâai ngaan). However, you wouldn’t use it as, like, a command word, like, let’s say that your mom say it to you, “get a job” “come on, just get a job” you wouldn’t use this word. It’s better to say -
หางานได้แล้ว! (hăa ngaan dâi láaeo) which is more like, “just go and find a job.”
So ได้งาน (dâai ngaan) is more like, you got a job yourself. You are offered a job.
4. หมั้น (mân) "engagement"
คุณหมั้นแล้วเหรอคะ ยินดีด้วยนะคะ (khun mân láaeo rǒoe khá. yin-dii dûuai ná khá)
“Are you engaged?” Congratulations!”
หมั้น (mân) is actually a verb. So if you want to refer to an engagement, you put the word การ (gaan) in front of a verb to make it a noun. So it will be การหมั้น (gaan mân) “an engagement.”
Or if you want to refer to engagement as a ceremony like engagement ceremony, you put the word งาน (ngaan) in front. งาน (ngaan) means “celebration.” So it will be งานหมั้น (ngaan mân) “engagement celebration.”
5. งานแต่งงาน (ngaan-dtàeng-ngaan) "wedding"
งานแต่งงานของเขายิ่งใหญ่มาก (ngaan dtàaeng ngaan khǎawng khăo yîng yài mâak)
“His wedding is very grand.”
Like I said before, because wedding is kind of like celebration, so we put the word งาน (ngaan) in front the word แต่งงาน (dtàeng-ngaan). แต่งงาน (dtàeng-ngaan) is actually to get married. So when they have the word งาน (ngaan) in front, it becomes “wedding.”
6. เกษียณ (gà-sǐian) "retire"
พ่ออยากเกษียณตอนอายุ 60 ปี (phâaw yàak gà-sĭian dtaawn aa-yú hòk sìp bpii) "พ่อต้องการที่จะเกษียณเมื่อเขาอายุ 60 ปี"
“Dad wants to retire when he is 60 years old. I think it’s normal for Thai people to get retired when they are 60. Some people retire when they are like 55 like for early retirement but mostly are like 60, 55 to 60.
7. เดินทาง (dooen-thaang) "travel"
นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ฉันเดินทางมาที่นี่ (nîi bpen khráng râaek thîi chăn dooen thaang maa thîi nîi) "นี่คือครั้งแรกที่ผมเดินทางไปที่นี่"
This is my first time traveling here.
If you go to Thailand for the first time, you can use this sentence.
นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ฉันเดินทางมาประเทศไทย (nîi bpen khráng râaek thîi chăn dooen thaang maa bprà-thêet thai) “This is my first time traveling to Thailand.”
8. งานศพ (ngaan-sòp) "funeral"
พวกเราไปร่วมงานศพของคุณปู่เขา (phûuak rao bpai rûuam ngaan sòp khǎawng khǎawng khun bpùu khăo) "เราไปงานศพของคุณปู่"
We went to his grandfather’s funeral.
This word I just feel like this word you know like funeral like this or anything, I just don’t like it but then, this word งานศพ (ngaan-sòp); ศพ (sòp) actually means “corpse” or “dead body”.
Like I told you before, if you put the word งาน (ngaan) in front, then, it makes... the word becomes like – you know, งาน (ngaan) its celebration but it’s like kind of like an event for this word. So corpse plus the word งาน (ngaan).
So, งานศพ (ngaan-sòp), right? It becomes “funeral.”
9. ได้เลื่อนตำแหน่ง (dâi lûuean-dtam-nàaeng) "get promoted"
เขาได้เลื่อนตำแหน่งแล้ว (khăo dâi lûuean-dtam-nàaeng láaeo) "เขาได้รับการเลื่อนตำแหน่ง!"
“He got promoted.”
10. ย้าย (yáai) "move"
ฉันย้ายไปนอกเมืองเมื่อปีที่แล้ว (chǎn yáai bpai nâawk muueang mûuea bpii thîi-láaeo) "ผมย้ายไปอยู่ชานเมืองของปีก่อน"
I moved to the suburbs last year.
Okay, for “move” right, I think it works the same way as English word. So you can use it like when you move to somewhere, ย้าย (yáai).
And you can use it when you move an object to other place. So let’s say that “I move my pillow here and move from my left to my right”, ฉันย้ายหมอนจากด้านซ้ายมาด้านขวา (chăn yáai mǎawn jàak dâan sáai maa dâan khwăa)
Okay. So we are done for today’s lesson. Okay, let me tell you about myself.
ฉันเกิดเดือนธันวาคม (chăn gòoet duuean than-waa-khom) “I was born in December.”
ฉันจบการศึกษาแล้ว (chăn jòp gaan sùek-săa láaeo) “I have already graduated.”
แต่ว่า ฉันยังไม่ได้แต่งงาน (dtàae wâa chăn yang mâi dâi dtàaeng ngaan) “But I haven’t gotten married.”
Okay, I have told you my three life events. How about you guys? Just let me know in the comments below and if you like this lesson, don’t forget to like our video and subscribe to our channel and go to ThaiPod101.com to learn more Thai. See you next time. Bye-bye!
