Anutida: You can answer your phone at any time in Thailand.
John: It’s okay to answer your phone, even if you’re talking to someone face to face?
Anutida: Yes, it’s quite common for people to do that.
John: That might seem quite strange for foreigners.
Anutida: It might be, but remember that it’s common and not personal.
John: There must be some situations where it’s not acceptable though?
Anutida: It’s best not to answer a phone during things such as job interviews.

Anutida: ไม่ทราบว่ามีอะไรให้ช่วย(mâi sâap wâa mii à-rai hâi chûuai)
John: meaning "How can I help you?"
John: This sentence combines two phrases together.
Anutida: The first one is ไม่ทราบว่า(mâi sâap wâa), meaning "I don't know if..." and the second one is มีอะไรให้ช่วย(mii à-rai hâi chûuai)
John: That means "Is there anything I can do to help?" Together, it is "I don't know if there is anything I can do to help."
Anutida: It’s a formal way of saying "How can I help you?"
John: This is usually used by receptionists and in other formal situations.
Anutida: Yes, don’t use it with friends and family.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ไม่ทราบว่ามีอะไรอย่างอื่นให้ช่วยไหมคะ(mâi sâap wâa mii à-rai yàang-ùuen hâi chûuai mái khá)
John: ...which means "May I help you with anything else?"
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: ตอนนี้ติดสายอยู่(dtaawn-níi dtìt săai yùu)
John: meaning "on another line at the minute," or "now in a call."
John: Let’s break down this phrase.
Anutida: First is ตอนนี้(dtaawn-níi) which means "now." Next is ติด..อยู่(dtìt...yùu)
John: That means "to be stuck." The last word means "line."
Anutida: That is สาย(săai).
John: You use this when you are talking on the phone and can’t answer another call.
Anutida: It can be used by anyone, but is often used by a receptionist.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ขอโทษนะคะ ตอนนี้คุณมะลิติดสายลูกค้าอยู่(khǎaw-thôot ná khá dtaawn-níi khun má-lí dtìt săai lûuk-kháa yùu)
John: ... which means "I'm sorry. At the moment, Khun Mali is on another line with a client."
