John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Business Thai for Beginners Season 1 Lesson 6 - Complaining About the Office Wi-Fi in Thai. John Here.
Anutida: สวัสดีค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ) I'm Anutida.
John: In this lesson, you’ll learn about making complaints. The conversation takes place at the office.
It's between Mali and Fah.
John: The speakers are co-workers, therefore, they will speak informally in Thai. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

มะลิ: ช่วงนี้ไวไฟของบริษัทช้ามากเลย

Mali: That's a good idea. I'll write them an email.
John: I think that Wi-Fi is quickly becoming an essential in all walks of life, but especially in business.
Anutida: Yes, businesses send so many emails.
John: Do you have any tips for writing business emails in Thai?
Anutida: Make sure the contents are easy and polite.
John: Right, the person who receives the email is probably not the person in charge or the one in the know, so they need to understand what is happening.
Anutida: Be polite but to the point.
John: Is it possible to contact people via social media?
Anutida: Yeah, you can do that. A lot of Thai people use LINE.
John: That’s a messaging app that is very popular in Thailand and other Asian countries.
Anutida: People don’t always check their emails, but they always check their social media.
John: Would it be considered pushy to contact them like this, though?
Anutida: Not if you keep it polite!
John: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
John: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is...
Anutida: ได้ยินว่า
John: Meaning "I heard that".
John: What can you tell us about this?
Anutida: First is ได้ยิน, which means "heard." Next is ว่า.
John: This means "that," and then the phrase is finished by an ending particle we’ve discussed before.
Anutida: You can use this to talk about information you’ve heard before.
John: It’s second or third hand information that you’re giving to someone else.
Anutida: You can use this phrase in any situation.
John: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ได้ยินว่าจะมีร้านอาหารมาเปิดใหม่ในตึกนี้(dâai yin wâa jà mii ráan aa-hăan maa bpòoet mài nai dtùek níi)
John: ...which means "I heard that there will be a new restaurant in this building."
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: ช้าลง(cháa long)
John: Meaning "slow down, to become slower".
John: Let’s look at this word.
Anutida: First is the adjective ช้า(cháa), which means "slow." Then is ลง(long).
John: This means "to descend."
Anutida: You can use this to say something is becoming slower.
John: Can you use other adjectives to say something is getting more of something else, and not just with "slow"?
Anutida: You can use ช้า(cháa) with some adjectives, yes, but not all.
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... เดินให้ช้าลงหน่อยได้ไหม(dooen hâi cháa long nàuy dâai mái)
John: ... which means "Could you please slow down?"
John: Okay, what's the next word?
Anutida: ยากขึ้น(yâak khûen)
John: Meaning "To get more difficult".
John: This is a word.
Anutida: First is the adjective ยาก(yâak), which means "difficult." Next is ขึ้น(khûen).
John: That means "to ascend."
Anutida: You use this to say something became more difficult.
John: This is similar to the last word, only with a different ending.
Anutida: Yes, this uses ขึ้น(khûen) instead of ลง(long).
John: Can you give us an example using this word?
Anutida: Sure. For example, you can say... ข้อสอบยากขึ้นนะ(khâaw-sàawp yâak khûen ná)
John: ... which means "The test got more difficult."
John: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

John: In this lesson, you'll learn about making complaints.
John: We’re going to look at everyday, normal complaints and not formal written complaints.
Anutida: There are two simple ways to make a complaint. The first is an adjective, followed by จัง(jang).
John: This particle gives emphasis to the word that goes before it. It’s not negative or positive on its own.
Anutida: It can be used in compliments too.
John: What’s the second way?
Anutida: ไม่(mâi), followed by a verb or an adjective, and then เลย(looei)
John: In English, this would be "not…. [verb or adjective]…. at all". Now, let’s look at some words and phrases we can use for complaints.
Anutida: เหนื่อยจัง(nùuea jang)
John: "so tired"
Anutida: ร้อนจัง(ráawn jang)
John: "so hot"
Anutida: แย่จัง(yâae jang)
John: "so bad, that’s bad"
Anutida: ไม่ดีเลย(mâi dii looei)
John: "not good at all"
Anutida: ไม่สวยเลย(mâi sŭuai looei)
John: "not pretty at all". But, Anutida, we want our listeners to be more constructive, so rather than complaining, why don’t we tell them how to be proactive and give some advice in Thai?
Anutida: Sounds good John.
John: You can deliver your advice saying
Anutida: ลอง...ไหม(laawng ... mái)
John: "How about…?" or
Anutida: ลอง...รึยัง(laawng ... rúe yang)
John: "Have you tried…?" Another option is saying
Anutida: ถ้าฉันเป็นคุณ(thâa chăn bpen khun)
