Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring interesting facts that you must know about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 19: A Beach Near Bangkok, Hua Hin.
Hua Hin or หัวหิน is one of the districts of the province called ประจวบคีรีขันธ์. It is a town that both Thai people and foreigners know very well. Hua Hin is a famous beach resort town that visitors can enjoy in one day, located about 281 kilometers away from Bangkok. It takes about 2.5 to three hours by car and about forty-five minutes by plane from Bangkok.
Hua Hin is the oldest resort town in Thailand. Originally, Hua Hin was just a small fishing village. It became famous when Rama VI decided to build พระราชนิเวศน์มฤคทายวัน, a famous palace, and the railway line connecting it to Bangkok. During his reign, Rama VII ordered his summer palace be built, and called it พระราชวังไกลกังวล, meaning "Far from Worries."
Hua Hin is beautiful and peaceful. Its main beach is a four-kilometer white, sandy strip that stretches from the town center to เขาตะเกียบ. Almost never overcrowded, the activities here revolve around rest and relaxation, including horseback riding, sunbathing, and strolling along the beach. There are also some water sports that visitors can enjoy such as water skiing, jet skiing, windsurfing, and parasailing.
Hua Hin also has a number of other attractive sites to tourists, including พระราชนิเวศน์มฤคทายวัน, Hua Hin Railway Station and Night Street Market. Visitors can drive, take a limousine from their hotels or hire a taxi from downtown.
