Hello, and welcome to the Culture File: Thailand series at ThaiPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring essential information about Thailand, Thai Culture and Thai People. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 8 - Loei Province
Loei Province, or เลย, is a city located in the northeastern region of Thailand, 520 kilometers from Bangkok. Loei is an ecotourism city, surrounded by rolling mountain ranges that are covered by fog lines and are abundant in various types of flora. The area is characterized as having a comfortably cool temperature, beautiful geographical surroundings and unique cultures and traditions. Its most well-known mountains are ภูหลวง (Phu Luang), ภูเรือ (Phu Ruea) and ภูกระดึง (Phu Kradueng.)
The area called ภูหลวง is a wildlife preserve. Because of its high plateau and cool climate throughout the year, the area spawns many colorful flowers and various types of forests. Visitors can choose to trek through the preserve to see the trees and flowers up close, or can opt to reach the summit by car.
Phu Ruea National Park or อุทยานแห่งชาติภูเรือ consists of a tall mountain with a vast plain at the summit. Its climate is generally cold year-round. Attractions in the park include observation points and the Huai Phai waterfall or น้ำตกห้วยไผ. Visitors can drive there, but have to walk roughly seven hundred meters in order to reach the mount’s summit.
Phu Kradueng National Park, or อุทยานแห่งชาติภูกระดึง, is one of the most popular natural attractions among young Thai trekkers and adventurous foreigners. The trail leading to the summit is quite steep, but is lined with seven rest areas along the way for trekkers to take a break when needed. These rest plateaus are called SUM or ซำ. Each "Sum" has food and drink vendors where you can purchase refreshments.
Pha Lom Sak or ผาหล่มสัก is the symbol of Phu Kradeung National Park. It has a large plateau with a notable, tall pine tree sprouting from the base of the cliff. It’s also well-known as a spectacular observation point for watching sunsets, in Thai พระอาทิตย์ตกดิน, which draws many tourists and photographers to this area.
Another place of note is ผานกแอน. This is an important tourist spot where many people go to watch the sunrise, or in Thai พระอาทิตย์ขึ้น.
