Hi Bernard!
Great question! 😊 The "ว์" in the word "สัตว์เลี้ยง" (sàt líiang / pet) is indeed silent. In Thai, some consonants or consonant clusters at the end of a word are not pronounced. The "ว์" is used to indicate the original Sanskrit or Pali root of the word, but in modern Thai pronunciation, it is not vocalized.
It's fantastic that you're noticing these details! Keep up the great work. If you have any more questions, feel free to let us know.
ขอบคุณครับ (khàawp-khun khráp / Thank you)

Hi! What is the ว์ in สัตว์เลี้ยง used for since it does not contribute to the pronunciation sàt líiang? Thank you.
Hello John,
Thank you. We do not pronounce it. (แฮมสเตอร์ haaem-dtôoe) is often softened or not pronounced distinctly. As a result, some speakers might pronounce it more like "haaem-dtôoe" (แฮมสเตอร์) without emphasizing the "s." "nǔu haaem-dtôoe" (reflects the pronunciation without the distinct "s" sound). I hope that helps. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out. I would be happy to assist.

Hi cwc,
Thank you. It just means that all forty-four Thai consonants can be used as an initial consonant. It doesn't mean same sounding consonants that are in the same class can be used as exchange in the same word spelling. Which a lot of time, considered as missed spell. Hope that helps.

Hi Parisa
I looked further into thai-language.com and came across this:
thai-language.com/ref/consonants
Please see the second sentence under sub-heading, Initial Consonant Phones, which reads as follows:
"Any one of the forty-four Thai consonant graphemes can be used in the syllable-initial positions."
Does this mean that any same sounding consonants that are in the same class can be used, as we have discussed?
Best regards
cwc
Hi cwc,
You're welcome. I'm glad to hear you understand.
Have a great day.

Hi Parisa
Thank you for your two replies:
1. I will look further into the pages of thai-language.com to see if I can understand more.
2. Your second reply is interesting, even though I do not understand all the Thai sentences. I agree with your point that we cannot rely on static grammatical rules alone . This is true indeed that languages, including Thai, evolve over time. This is the point.
As a beginner, I can now only observe such gradual development, and if I may add, I am glad of such introduction gradual changes and flexibility, as they make learning Thai easier.
Best regards

Hi again cwc,
ษ is often use as a second syllable initial or third for examples ศึกษา ปรึกษา รักษา บริษัท ไปรษณีย์ or as a final consonant เศรษฐี พิษ อังกฤษ ยาพิษ ขอโทษ โทษที โทษนะ It's come down to exploring words spell. We will not be able to specify which letter to use by only relying on grammatical rules. Hope that helps.

Hi, Parisa
I would like to ask you whether it in order to use a different initial consonant instead of the usual one to form a word, as long as they sound the same and are in the same class.
For example: saaw sa-la, saaw ruue-sii, and saaw suuea.
Khaawp-khun maak khrap.
Best regards

Hi cwc,
"aaw-aang" อ is a silent, leading consonant that ends up shifting the tone of the syllable. The four words that use อ leading. อย่า อยู่ อย่าง อยาก. also check these out:

Hi cwc,
initial consonant is the first letter in the syllable (sometime could have two letters together if they are cluster) + vowel + final consonant which is the last letter at the end of a syllable (not every word end with consonant but most of them do) Syllable could end with vowel then we could check again if they are short (make dead syllable/dead ending) or long vowel (make life syllable or life ending) "haaw hiip" Leading can appear in a cluster when the second consonant is any one of the low class sonorant consonants ง, น, ม, ย, ร, ล, ว, ญ, ณ, ฬ The reason that it’s needed and its function here is to provide a method for changing the tone of these sonorant initial consonants

Hi cwc,
A syllable begins with low class consonants:
Begin syllable with low class consonants and end a syllable with (live) -m ม -n ญ,ณ,น,ร,ล,ฬ -ng ง = mid tone
Begin syllable with low class consonants and end a syllable with (dead) P/T/K + short vowel in the syllable = high tone
Begin syllable with low class consonants and end a syllable with (dead) P/T/K + long vowel vowel in the syllable = falling tone
