INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ. I’m Jing, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com.
Ohm: Ohm here! This is Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 17 - Retirement Planning the Thai Way. In this lesson you'll learn about using สมมุติ to mean "suppose" or "presume".
Jing: The conversation takes place at a coffee shop.
Ohm: And it’s between a young couple, Pim and Gong.
Jing: They’ll be using informal Thai.
Ohm: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Ohm: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
พิม: สมมุติว่าในอนาคตเราได้แต่งงานกัน พี่ก้องอยากมีลูกกี่คนคะ (sǒm-mút wâa nai à-naa-khót rao dâai dtàeng-ngaan gan. phîi gâwng yàak mii lûuk gìi khon khá.)
Pim: Suppose that we got married in the future. How many kids would you want to have?
ก้อง: 5 คนจ้ะ (hâa khon jâ.)
Gong: Five.
พิม: โห แล้วเราจะจ่ายค่าเล่าเรียนไหวเหรอคะ (hǒo. láaeo rao jà jàai khâa-lâo-riian wǎai rǒoe khá.)
Pim: Woah! And we’d be able to afford their education?
ก้อง: อาจจะยากหน่อยตอนเราเลี้ยงดูพวกเขา แต่จะดีกับเราตอนแก่นะ จะมีลูกๆ หลายคนดูแลเรา (àat-jà yâak nàwy dtaawn rao líiang duu phûuak-khǎo. dtàae jà dii gàp rao dtaawn gàae ná. jà mii lûuk-lûuk lǎai khon duu-laae rao.)
Gong: It might be a little difficult when taking care of them. But it would be good for us when we get old. We’ll have many children to look after us.
พิม: แต่สมมุติว่าเรามีแต่ลูกผู้ชาย แล้วทุกคนบวชเป็นพระแล้วไม่ได้ทำงานล่ะคะ (dtàae sǒm-mút wâa rao mii dtàae lûuk phûu-chaai. láaeo thúk-khon bùuat bpen phrá. láaeo mâi dâi tham-ngaan lâ khá.)
Pim: But suppose we had only sons, and all of them became monks and didn’t work?
ก้อง: เราจะโชคร้ายขนาดนั้นเลยเหรอ ใครจะมีลูกชายบวชเป็นพระตั้ง 5 รูปในครอบครัวเดียว (rao jà chôok-ráai khà-nàat nán looei rǒoe. khrai jà mii lûuk-chaai bùuat bpen phrá dtâng hâa rûup nai khrâawp-khruua diiao.)
Gong: We’re going to be unlucky like that, huh? Who would have as many as 5 sons become monks in a single family?
พิม: พิมพูดเล่นนะ เพราะพิมคิดว่าเราจะมีแต่ลูกสาว (phim phûut lên ná. phráw phim khít wâa rao jà mii dtàae lûuk-sǎao.)
Pim: Right, I’m just kidding because I think we’ll have only daughters.
ก้อง: อ๋อ น้องพิมล้อเล่นอีก ใช่มั้ยจ๊ะ (ǎaw. náawng phim láaw-lên ìik. châi mái já.)
Gong: Oh, you’re just kidding again, right?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ohm: Hey Kru Jing, what do you think of Gong’s retirement strategy?
Jing: Well, it sounds kind of funny. But it might actually work in Thailand.
Ohm: Assuming they don’t all become monks, of course.
Jing: Right. In Thai culture, people believe very strongly in taking care of their parents. After you start working, there is an expectation to send money back to your parents each month.
Ohm: Every single month? What if your parents don’t really need any money?
Jing: Well, it might not be every month. And the amount isn’t always so important. The important thing is to be seen to be making an effort.
Ohm: So the idea is to pay back your parents for all their help raising you, right?
Jing: Yes, but it’s more than just that. Your parents are the ones who gave you life, so no matter how much you do for them it’s impossible to ever fully repay their kindness.
Ohm: I see. Well, let’s take a look now at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ohm: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing: บวชเป็นพระ bùuat bpen phrá
Ohm: This phrase means “to ordain to be a monk”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. บวช bùuat is a verb meaning “to ordain”, and เป็น bpen is the verb “to be”.
Ohm: So พระ phrá must mean “monk”, right?
Jing: Yes. พระ phrá can mean either “monk” or “Buddha image”. But of course in this context it means “monk”.
Ohm: I suppose it would be rather difficult for a person to ordain to be a Buddha statue.
Jing: Right. Also this phrase can be shortened down to just บวชพระ bùuat phrá.
Ohm: Alright, what’s the next phrase?
Jing: เราจะโชคร้ายขนาดนั้นเลยเหรอ rao jà chôok ráai khà-nàat nán looei rǒoe
Ohm: This expression means “We are going to be so unlucky like that, huh?”
Jing: That’s correct. One of the keywords in this sentence is โชคร้าย chôok ráai, which means “bad luck” or “misfortune”.
Ohm: Oh, I see. That’s just the opposite of โชคดี chôok-dii, or “good luck”.
Jing: Right. Another key expression is ขนาดนั้น khà-nàat nán, which means “to that degree” or “to that extent”.
Ohm: OK, I got it. That means โชคร้ายขนาดนั้น chôok ráai khà-nàat nán means “that unlucky”.
Jing: That’s right.
Ohm: And what are the last few phrases we have to look at?
Jing: They are ล้อเล่น láaw-lên and พูดเล่น phûut-lên
Ohm: Both of these expressions mean “to tease” or “to joke”.
Jing: That’s right. เล่น lên is the verb “to play”. When we put it right after other verbs, it means the action is done in a non-serious manner.
Ohm: I see. So you can use ล้อเล่น láaw-lên or พูดเล่น phûut-lên whenever you want to let someone know that you were “only joking” or “just kidding”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right.
Ohm: Great! Now let’s move on to the grammar section.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ohm: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use สมมุติ sǒm-mút to mean "suppose" or "presume".
Jing: สมมุติ sǒm-mút is a verb that means “to assume”, “to suppose”, or “to imagine”.
Ohm: And how do we use it in a sentence?
Jing: สมมุติ sǒm-mút will usually appear at the beginning of a sentence, and it will be followed by ว่า wâa.
Ohm: I see. So สมมุติว่า sǒm-mút wâa means “assuming that”. Then we have to put some statement after it, right?
Jing: Yes. There will usually be two statements. The one that follows right after สมมุติว่า sǒm-mút wâa is the thing that you assume.
Ohm: And what’s the second statement?
Jing: Usually there will be a second sentence that uses the assumption from the first sentence as a condition.
Ohm: I think an example from the conversation would make this more clear.
Jing: Sure. One example was...
สมมุติว่าในอนาคตเราได้แต่งงานกัน พี่ก้องอยากมีลูกกี่คนคะ
sǒm-mút wâa nai à-naa-khót rao dâai dtàeng-ngaan gan. phîi gâwng yàak mii lûuk gìi khon khá.
Ohm: “Suppose that we got married in the future. How many kids would you want to have?” / In this case, we see that the second sentence is a question which is asked while depending on the assumption set up in the first sentence.
Jing: Right. First you have to assume they will get married, before you can ask how many kids they’ll have.
Ohm: How about we look at the first sentence in detail. It started with...
Jing: สมมุติว่า sǒm-mút wâa
Ohm: “Suppose that...”
Jing: ในอนาคต nai à-naa-khót
Ohm: “in the future...”
Jing: เราได้แต่งงานกัน rao dâai dtàeng-ngaan gan
Ohm: “we can get married”. So this sentence set up a condition, and then the question was asked in the second sentence...
Jing: พี่ก้องอยากมีลูกกี่คนคะ phîi gâwng yàak mii lûuk gìi khon khá.
Ohm: “How many kids would you want to have?” But the second sentence doesn’t need to be a question, does it?
Jing: No, it doesn’t. Pim could have said...
สมมุติว่าในอนาคตเราได้แต่งงานกัน พิมอยากมีลูกห้าคน
sǒm-mút wâa nai à-naa-khót rao dâai dtàeng-ngaan gan. phim yàak mii lûuk hâa khon.
Ohm: “Supposing that we got married in the future, I would want to have five kids.” So here the speaker is just making a statement based on the assumption in the first sentence.
Jing: That’s right.

Outro

Ohm: Alright, that’s all for this lesson. Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you next time!
Jing: แล้วเจอกันใหม่ láaeo jooe gan mài

‘Thai workers are construction jobs in Middle East countries and working in Thai restaurants in Europe, North America, or Japan.’

And in Israel they do agricultural work, especially in rural Hebrew-speaking areas.

Hello Faith,

Thank you very much for your comment. In the old days we used to have a really big family because we need labor to work in our farm. One family could have up to 10 or 12 kids but not every family do. Average will be about 3 to 5 kids. Now a days our country developed and because cost of living is more so people who live in the city consider to have one or two , rarely have 3 kids. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.

In China, people sometimes want only one kid because of the cost of living expenses. What do normal Thai parents think concerning kids and how many they want?

Hello Ran,

Thank you very much for your comment. For your question, "สื่อ" low tone means "media /to communicate /convey or transmit", but "ซื้อ" high tone means "to buy" so "สื่อถึง" means "a guide for...". Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.
