INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ. I’m Jing, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com.
Ohm: Ohm here! This is Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 20 - The Secret Lives of Thais. In this lesson, you'll learn about using ไม่ between two verbs to show that the first verb was an unsuccessful action.
Jing: The conversation takes place at a bowling alley.
Ohm: It’s between a young couple, Pim and Gong, and Gong’s friend Go.
Jing: The main speakers are two male friends, so they’ll be speaking impolite Thai with each other.
Ohm: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE

gâwng: uuem. mâi-bpen-rai.
Pim: Yay! I got a second strike. It's your turn.
Gong: Just a minute. Hello. What's up, Go?
Go: I went to meet my girlfriend at the airport. But I looked and couldn't find her.
Gong: Did you call her?
Go: I called already, but nobody answered.
Gong: Did her plane land on time? Don't start worrying.
Go: She told me her plane landed on time, but she just disappeared. Last night I couldn't sleep because I was so worried about her.
Gong: Hmm...It's strange. I wonder whether she has a secret lover?
Go: I was thinking the same thing. What should I do?
Gong: I can't think of anything. There might not be anything you can do, besides wait for her to contact you.
Go: You're right. I just have to wait. Well, that's all. Thanks a lot, friend.
Gong: Yeah, no problem.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ohm: Hey Khru Jing, can you explain what this word กิ๊ก gík is all about?
Jing: Sure, I’ll try. People say that a กิ๊ก gík is someone who is more than a friend, but less than a girlfriend or boyfriend. Or in other words, a gík is a casual lover who is kept secret from your significant other.
Ohm: Hmm, I see. So it doesn’t matter if you are married or just dating someone. In either case, if you are also seeing someone else on the side, that person is your กิ๊ก gík. Is that right?
Jing: Yes. It doesn’t matter if you are a man or woman, gay or straight. Anyone could have a กิ๊ก gík.
Ohm: So just how common is this?
Jing: Well, that might depend on who you ask. I heard there was a recent survey that showed more than half of both men and women cheated on their spouse or partner.
Ohm: Wow! That many? And don’t people get upset when their partners are cheating?
Jing: Yes, of course. Most people are very hurt to find out that their husband or wife has a กิ๊ก gík. But some people just can’t stop themselves.
Ohm: I see. Well, how about we take a look at the vocabulary now.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ohm: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing: แป๊บนึง bpáaep-nueng
Ohm: This phrase is a casual way to say “just a second”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. If you want to tell someone to “just wait a second”, you can do so by using แป๊บนึง bpáaep-nueng.
Ohm: OK, what’s the next phrase?
Jing: ไม่มีคนรับสาย mâi mii khon ráp-sǎai
Ohm: This means “nobody answered”.
Jing: Right. ไม่มีคน mâi mii khon literally means “there is no person”, and รับสาย ráp-sǎai means “to pick up the line”.
Ohm: So this is something you can say when you call and nobody on the other end picks up the phone.
Jing: Exactly. If that happens, then you can say ไม่มีคนรับสาย mâi mii khon ráp-sǎai.
Ohm: Alright. What’s the third phrase we want to look at?
Jing: ตรงเวลา dtrong wee-laa
Ohm: This expression means “right on time”.
Jing: That’s correct. ตรง dtrong means “straight”, and เวลา wee-laa is “time”.
Ohm: Sometimes I’ve heard Thai people say “at a straight time” when they mean to say “right on time” in English. Do you think it’s because of this phrase?
Jing: Yes, I’d guess so. They are probably translating ตรงเวลา dtrong wee-laa very directly, so they say “straight time” in English.
Ohm: And what’s the last phrase we’re going to cover?
Jing: หายไปไหนก็ไม่รู้ hǎai bpai nǎi gâaw mâi rúu
Ohm: This means “I don’t know where it disappeared to.”
Jing: That’s right. หาย hǎai is the verb “to disappear”, and ไปไหน bpai nǎi is a question meaning “Where did it go?” ก็ gâaw is a connecting word like “well” or “so”, and ไม่รู้ mâi rúu means “I don’t know”.
Ohm: So the entire phrase can be understood as “Where did it disappear to? Well, I don’t know.”
Jing: Yes, that’s right. หายไปไหนก็ไม่รู้ hǎai bpai nǎi gâaw mâi rúu is a common thing to say if you lost something and can’t find it.
Ohm: Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ohm: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use ไม่ mâi between two verbs, to show that the first verb was an unsuccessful action.
Jing: This pattern is used when the two verbs are usually connected in a natural order.
Ohm: Can you give an example of two such verbs?
Jing: Sure. For example, the verb “to lie down” would come before the verb “to sleep”.
Ohm: OK, I see. Usually, if you lie down you will fall asleep afterward.
Jing: Right. But if you lie down and aren’t able to fall asleep, you can say...
นอนไม่หลับ
naawn mâi làp
Ohm: “I laid down, but couldn’t sleep.” As you can see, the negative particle ไม่ mâi makes it so that the second action doesn’t take place. That implies that the first action was carried out unsuccessfully.
Jing: Exactly. One example that we had from the conversation was...
กูมาหาแฟนที่สนามบิน แต่กูหาเค้าไม่เจอ
guu maa hǎa faaen thîi sà-nǎam-bin. dtàae guu hǎa kháo mâi jooe.
Ohm: “I went to see my girlfriend at the airport. But I looked and couldn’t find her.”
Jing: In this example, หา hǎa is the verb “to look for”, and เจอ jooe is the verb “to meet”.
Ohm: So we can see that the speaker’s attempt to look for his girlfriend was unsuccessful. What was the key part of this sentence?
Jing: หาเค้าไม่เจอ hǎa kháo mâi jooe, which means “looked for her, but didn’t find her.”
Ohm: I noticed that the second verb doesn’t have a subject or an object attached to it.
Jing: Yes, that’s very common with this type of sentence, because they should be obvious from the context.
Ohm: What are some other pairs of verbs that we often use in this pattern?
Jing: One is...มองไม่เห็น
maawng mâi hěn
Ohm: “to look at, but not see.” Any others?
Jing: How about...คิดไม่ออก
khít mâi àawk
Ohm: “to think about, but are unable to express.” Ok, let’s review some of these for speaking practice. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Jing. First was “I laid down, but couldn’t sleep.”...
Jing: นอนไม่หลับ
naawn mâi làp
Ohm: (pause) Next was “to look for but can’t find”...
Jing: หาไม่เจอ hǎa mâi jooe
Ohm: (pause) OK, the next one was “to look at, but not see.”...
Jing: มองไม่เห็น
maawng mâi hěn
Ohm: (pause) And finally we had “to think about, but are unable to express.”
Jing: คิดไม่ออก
khít mâi àawk
Ohm: (pause) Great job everyone!

Outro

Ohm: Alright, that’s all for this lesson. Make sure to check the lesson notes, and we’ll see you next time!
Jing: แล้วเจอกันใหม่ láaeo jooe gan mài

สวัสดีค่ะ คุณ Pete,
