INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ. I’m Jing, and welcome to ThaiPod101.com.
Ohm: Hi everyone, I’m Ohm. This is Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 7 - From the Gulf of Thailand to the Shelves of the 7-Eleven. In this lesson you'll learn about compound words that begin with ใบ.
Jing: The conversation takes place riding on a motorbike after a date.
Ohm: It’s between a young couple, Pim and Gong, and a 7-Eleven employee.
Jing: The speakers are dating, so they’ll be using informal Thai. With the 7-11 employee, they use formal language.
Ohm: Okay, let’s listen to the conversation.

Ohm: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
ก้อง: พี่จะจอดรถที่เซเว่นซื้อขนม น้องพิมจะเข้าไปด้วยกันมั้ย (phîi jà jàawt rót thîi see-wên súue khà-nǒm. náawng phim jà khâo bpai dûuai gan mái.)

พิม: ค่ะ พิมก็เริ่มหิวแล้ว (khâ. phim gâaw rôoem hǐu láaeo.)
Pim: Yes. I’m getting hungry too.
ก้อง: พี่จะกินปลาหมึกแห้ง น้องพิมจะกินอะไรดีจ๊ะ (phîi jà gin bplaa-mùek hâaeng. náawng phim jà gin à-rai dii já.)
Gong: I’m going to eat dried squid. What will you eat?
พิม: อยากกินสาหร่ายค่ะ (yàak gin sǎa-ràai khâ.)
Pim: I want to eat seaweed.
ก้อง: สาหร่ายรสออริจินัลหรือรสเผ็ดจ๊ะ (sǎa-ràai rót-aaw-rí-jì-nan rǔue rót-phèt já.)
Gong: Original or spicy flavor seaweed?
พิม: รสออริจินัลค่ะ (rót-aaw-rí-jì-nan khâ.)
Pim: Original flavor.

Gong: Are you going to get anything else?
พิม: ไม่ค่ะ (mâi khâ.)
Pim: No.
ก้อง: งั้นเราก็ไปจ่ายตังค์กันนะ (ngán rao gâaw bpai jàai dtang gan ná.)
Gong: Then let’s go pay.
พนักงาน: ทั้งหมด 59 บาท ใส่ถุงมั้ยคะ (tháng-mòt hâa-sìp bàat. sài thǔng mái khâ.)
Employee: The total is 59 baht. Would you like a bag?
ก้อง: ครับ แต่ไม่รับใบเสร็จนะครับ (khráp. dtàae mâi ráp bai-sèt ná khráp.)
Gong: Yes, but I don’t need a receipt.
พิม: พี่ก้อง นี่กระดาษอะไรคะ (phîi gâwng nîi grà-dàat à-rai khâ.)
Pim: Gong, what’s this paper?
ก้อง: โอ๊ย จอดรถแป๊บเดียวโดนใบสั่งเลยเหรอเนี่ย (óoi. jàawt rót bpáep-diiao doon bai-sàng looei rǒoe nîia.)
Gong: Arrrgh! I park the bike for just a second, and I get a parking ticket!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ohm: Hey Khru Jing, don’t they sell potato chips and Twinkies at the 7-Elevens in Thailand? Do people really want to snack on seaweed?
Jing: Haven’t you ever tried fried seaweed? It’s so addictive. After you open a bag, you can’t stop eating them until they’re all gone!
Ohm: Is that so? Well then, someone must be making a lot of money selling seaweed.
Jing: Yes, of course. You should watch the movie วัยรุ่นพันล้าน ‘wai-rûn phaan láan’. It’s the true story of the guy who started the Tao Kae Noi seaweed company. He made a billion baht while he was still a teenager.
Ohm: Wow! So he’s like the Mark Zuckerberg of seaweed.
Jing: Yeah, I guess so.
Ohm: OK, now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ohm: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing: ใส่ถุงมั้ยคะ ‘sài thǔng mái khá’
Ohm: This is the question “Would you like it in a bag?”
Jing: That’s right. You may be asked this when buying something at a store. ใส่ ‘sài’ is the verb “to put in”, and ถุง ‘thǔng’ means “bag”.
Ohm: And how should you reply to this question?
Jing: It’s a yes/no question, so you can just reply by repeating the verb, either with or without the negative particle.
Ohm: I see. So if you said ใส่ ‘sài’, that would mean “Yes, put it in a bag.” And ไม่ใส่ ‘mâi sài’ would mean “No. Don’t put it in a bag.”
Jing: That’s right.
Ohm: What’s the second phrase?
Jing: จะซื้ออะไรเพิ่มอีกมั้ย ‘jà súue à-rai phôoem ìik mái’
Ohm: This means “Are you going to buy anything else?”
Jing: That’s correct. The key word in this phrase is เพิ่ม ‘phôoem’ which means “added”.
Ohm: Doesn’t the word อีก ‘ìik’ mean “additional” also?
Jing: Yes, it does. A word-for-word translation sounds redundant in English. It would be something like “Will you buy something added additionally?”
Ohm: Alright. What’s the final phrase we want to look at?
Jing: แป๊บเดียว ‘bpáaep-diiao’
Ohm: This means “just a moment”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. You can use แป๊บเดียว ‘bpáaep-diiao’ by itself. Or you can include the verb “to wait” by saying รอแป๊บเดียว ‘raaw bpáaep-diiao’.
Ohm: Great. Now let’s move on to the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ohm: The focus of this lesson is compound words that begin with ใบ ‘bai’.
Jing: The most basic meaning of ใบ ‘bai’ is the noun “leaf”.
Ohm: And isn’t ใบ ‘bai’ used as a classifier too?
Jing: Yes, that’s right. ใบ ‘bai’ is used as a classifier for leaves and other small flat objects, such as slips of paper. There are also many compound nouns formed with ใบ ‘bai’.
Ohm: And most of these words are different types of slips of paper, right?
Jing: That’s right. The first example from the conversation was...ไม่รับใบเสร็จนะครับ ‘mâi ráp bai-sèt ná khráp.’
Ohm: “I don’t need a receipt.”
Jing: The key word here is ใบเสร็จ ‘bai-sèt’, which means “receipt”. The other example from the conversation was in the sentence...
จอดรถแป๊บเดียวโดนใบสั่งเลยเหรอเนี่ย
‘jàawt rót bpáaep-diiao doon bai-sàng looei rǒoe nîia’.
Ohm: “I park the bike for just a second, and I get a parking ticket!”
Jing: The key word here is ใบสั่ง ‘bai-sàng’, which means “ticket” or “citation”.
Ohm: I see. Now the second half of the word is สั่ง ‘sàng’. That’s the verb “to order”, isn’t it?
Jing: Yes, it is. When you get a ใบสั่ง ‘bai-sàng’, it means you are ordered to pay the fine.
Ohm: We all know that’s no fun. What other words can be made with ใบ ‘bai’?
Jing: Well, ยา ‘yaa’ means “medicine”. So if we add that to the end of ใบสั่ง ‘bai-sàng’ we get ใบสั่งยา ‘bai-sàng-yaa’. Can you guess the meaning of it?
Ohm: Hmm, that would be a “medicine order slip”. So I guess ใบสั่งยา ‘bai-sàng-yaa’ means “prescription”.
Jing: Exactly. Now how about this one? สมัคร ‘sà-màk’ is a verb that means “to apply”. So can you guess what ใบสมัคร ‘bai-sà-màk’ means?
Ohm: It must be an “application form”.
Jing: Right again! OK, last one. เกิด ‘gòoet’ is the verb “to be born”. So what do you think ใบเกิด ‘bai-gòet’ means?
Ohm: Well that must be a “birth certificate”.
Jing: You got it!
Ohm: There are many more words formed with ใบ ‘bai’ that we didn’t have time to cover. So make sure to check out the lesson notes.

Outro

Ohm: And that's it for this lesson, we’ll see you next time!
Jing: แล้วเจอกันใหม่ ‘láaeo jooe gan mài’
