สวัสดีค่ะ ดิฉันกิตติยาค่ะ (sà-wàt-dii khâ. dì-chǎn Kittaya khâ) |
Hi everybody! I’m Kittaya. |
Welcome to ThaiPod101.com’s “Learn Thai in 3 minutes.” The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai. |
In the previous lesson, we learned the verb yùu and how to talk about your location in Thai. In this lesson, we are going to learn how to talk about age using the word อายุ(aa-yú), meaning “age” |
It’s normal for young people in Thailand to ask each other’s age. Of course, it might be risky to ask people over 30, so be aware when doing so. |
If someone asks you คุณอายุเท่าไร(khun aa-yú thâo-rài) ? they are asking, “How old are you?” in formal Thai. |
[slowly] คุณอายุเท่าไร(khun aa-yú thâo-rài)? |
Now you have to answer with your age! If you are a man, start with, ผมอายุ(phǒm aa-yú) and women will say, ดิฉันอายุ(dì-chǎn aa-yú). If you remember from the last lesson, these mean “I” |
Hopefully you didn’t forget how to say numbers in Thai because next you add your age and finish with bpii, which in this case, means “years old.” |
All together it’s ผมอายุ(phǒm aa-yú) or ดิฉันอายุ(dì-chǎn aa-yú)., your age and ปี(bpii). |
Let’s look at some examples. |
ดิฉันอายุสิบแปดปี(dì-chǎn aa-yú sìp-bpàaet bpii) “I am 18” |
ดิฉันอายุยี่สิบปี(dì-chǎn aa-yú yîi-sìp bpii), “I am 20” |
ผมอายุยี่สิบห้าปี(phǒm aa-yú yîi-sìp hâa bpii) “I am 25 |
ผมอายุสี่สิบปี(phǒm aa-yú sìi-sìp bpii) “I am 40” |
Now it’s time for Kittaya’s Insights. |
In Thailand we also use khùuap instead of bpii for children who are between 1 and 12 years old |
For example : ลูกชายของผมอายุหกขวบ(lûuk-chaai khǎawng phǒm aa-yú hòk khùuap). |
“My son is 6 years old” [slowly] ลูกชายของผมอายุหกขวบ(lûuk-chaai khǎawng phǒm aa-yú hòk khùuap). |
In this lesson, we learned how to talk about your age using อายุ(aa-yú). Next time we’ll learn how to about possessions. |
I'll be waiting for you in the next Learn Thai in 3 minutes. สวัสดีค่ะ(sà-wàt-dii khâ) |

If I understand this lesson correctly, when stating someone's age, the final word should be ขวบ (ku-wab) if the person is younger than a teenager.
If the person is at least as old as a teenager, the final word should be ปี (bpii).
Example:
ลูกชายของฉันอายุหกขวบ (hok ku-wab)
... as contrasted with ...
ลูกชายของฉันอายุยี่สิบปี (yii sib bpii)
Is that correct?
Hello Kim-André M,
Thank you. Yes, อายุ + age/ years of place been builded + ปี would work. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.
Have a good day.

Does the pattern used for talking about your child's age work for objects as well? For example: บ้านของผมอายุ๑๓ปี?
ขอบคุณครับ
Hello Tony,
Thank you for question. There are same either formal or informal. Just skip the word "khun คุณ" after you get to know each other, then speaker will sound more close distance and less formal. Please feel free to let me know if you have questions. I will be glad to help.
Have a nice day.

Hello. This explains how to ask someone's age in formal Thai. Where can we learn how to do so in informal Thai?
