| In the last lesson, we learned how to use Thai adjectives. |
| In this lesson we will start talking about the most common Thai verbs, the ones you will certainly hear all the time! |
| The first verb in our series will be ไป(bpai), which means "to go". We will use this word along with many different destinations. |
| You will see that in Thai you have to use an appropriate linking word to connect ไป(bpai) |
| to your destination. |
| So imagine someone asks you วันหยุดนี้ คุณจะไปที่ไหน(wan-yùt níi khun jà bpai thîi nǎi)? That means "Where are you going this holidays?" in an informal form. Literally “This holiday you going to where?” |
| So if you are going to Chiang mai for example you will say in Thai ฉันจะไปเชียงใหม่(chǎn jà bpai chiiang-mài) |
| [slowly] ฉันจะไปเชียงใหม่(chǎn jà bpai chiiang-mài) |
| So let’s break down this answer: |
| First we had: |
| ฉัน(chǎn) which is "I", then |
| จะไป(jà bpai), which is “going to go to” or “will go to” |
| as we have learned so far, you can change the noun to ผม(phǒm) if you are a man or ดิฉัน(dì-chǎn) if you are a woman. |
| After จะไป(jà bpai) will be your destination, |
| and we had เชียงใหม่(chiiang-mài) which is the name of a city in the north of Thailand. |
| Let’s imagine when you go to Thailand and take a taxi, the taxi driver ask you คุณต้องการจะไปที่ไหน(khun dtâwng-gaan jà bpai thîi nǎi)? “Where do you want to go?” Literally “you want going to where? |
| If you want to answer “I want to go to Jatujak park”, say ดิฉันต้องการจะไปที่สวนจตุจักร(dì-chǎn dtâwng-gaan jà bpai thîi sǔuan jà-dtù-jàk) |
| [slowly] ดิฉันต้องการจะไปที่สวนจตุจักร(dì-chǎn dtâwng-gaan jà bpai thîi sǔuan jà-dtù-jàk) |
| Let’s break that down. Simply, it is “I want to go to + your destination” “ดิฉันต้องการจะไปที่…(dì-chǎn dtâwng-gaan jà bpai thîi......)” |
| Now it’s time for Kittaya’s Insights. |
| In Thai, if someone says to you ไป...กัน(bpai … gan) it means he or she is asking you to do something with them, and in between ไป(bpai) and กัน(gan) can be places or activities. |
| For example, ไปดูหนังกัน(bpai duu-nǎng gan) means “Let’s go to watch movie”, or another example, ไปอเมริกากัน(bpai à-mee-rí-gaa gan) “Let’s go to America.” |
