Hi everybody! Iโ€™m Kittaya.
Welcome to ThaiPod101.comโ€™s โ€œLearn Thai in 3 minutes.โ€ The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the verb เน„เธ›(bpai) which means "to go" in Thai.
In this lesson, we will continue talking about very common Thai verbs.
The second verb in our series is tham, which means "to do." But as in English, youโ€™ll see that the meaning of this verb is quite broad and it can be found in many different situations.
So imagine someone asks you เธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham ร -rai yรนu)? That means "What are you doing?" in an informal way.
So if you are doing your homework, for example, you will say in Thai
[slowly] เธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham gaan-bรขan yรนu).
Did you notice the word เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(yรนu) at the end of the sentence? We use this to talk about an activity we are in the middle of doing. When you want to say โ€œI am doing,โ€ as in โ€œI am doing homeworkโ€, just add เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(yรนu) at the end of the sentence.
As I said: เธ—เธณเธเธฒเธฃเธšเน‰เธฒเธ™เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham gaan-bรขan yรนu).
means โ€œdoing homework.โ€ What if someone asks you when you are cooking,
เธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham ร -rai yรนu)? How would you answer?
เธ—เธณเธญเธฒเธซเธฒเธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham aa-hวŽan yรนu)
[slowly] เธ—เธณเธญเธฒเธซเธฒเธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham aa-hวŽan yรนu)
Literally, this means โ€œdoing mealโ€
As I mentioned at the beginning,
เธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(tham ร -rai yรนu)? means "What are you doing?" in an informal way. So, what is the formal way to say this? Itโ€™s actually not very different from the informal one, you just need to add a noun, which is เธ”เธดเธ‰เธฑเธ™(dรฌ-chวŽn), เธœเธก(phว’m) or the name of the person plus (เธเธณเธฅเธฑเธ‡)gam-lang and then follow the same informal sentence tham โ€ฆ.เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(โ€ฆ.. yรนu)
เธ„เธธเธ“เธกเธฒเธ™เธดเธ•เธเธณเธฅเธฑเธ‡เธ—เธณเธญเธฒเธซเธฒเธฃเธญเธขเธนเนˆ(khun maa-nรญt gam-lang tham aa-hวŽan yรนu)
โ€œMr.Manit is cooking.โ€
Letโ€™s look at one more example: if someone asks you โ€œWhere is your mother?โ€ and you want to answer, โ€œshe is working,โ€ what would you say? By the way, โ€œworkingโ€ is เธ—เธณเธ‡เธฒเธ™(tham ngaan).
เธ„เธธเธ“เนเธกเนˆเธเธณเธฅเธฑเธ‡เธ—เธณเธ‡เธฒเธ™เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(khun mรขae gam-lang tham ngaan yรนu).
[slowly] เธ„เธธเธ“เนเธกเนˆเธเธณเธฅเธฑเธ‡เธ—เธณเธ‡เธฒเธ™เธญเธขเธนเนˆ(khun mรขae gam-lang tham ngaan yรนu).
Now itโ€™s time for Kittayaโ€™s Insights.
When asking someone in Thai, เธ„เธธเธ“เธˆเธฐเธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃ(khun jร  tham ร -rai)? โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€ we sometimes add the specific time in front or at the end of the sentence. For example เธ„เธธเธ“เธˆเธฐเธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃเธžเธฃเธธเนˆเธ‡เธ™เธตเน‰(khun jร  tham ร -rai phrรปng-nรญi)? means โ€œWhat are you going to do tomorrow?โ€ or you can say โ€œTomorrow, what are you going to do?โ€ by saying เธžเธฃเธธเนˆเธ‡เธ™เธตเน‰เธ„เธธเธ“เธˆเธฐเธ—เธณเธญเธฐเน„เธฃ(phrรปng-nรญi, khun jร  tham ร -rai)?
In this lesson, we learned how to use the verb เธ—เธณ(tham) in many different contexts and Iโ€™m sure it will help you a lot!
Next time weโ€™ll learn another very useful and romantic verb, เธŠเธญเธš(chรขawp).
Do you know what this Thai French verb means? Iโ€™m sure you have an idea!
Iโ€™ll be waiting for you in the next Learn Thai in 3 minutes. เธชเธงเธฑเธชเธ”เธตเธ„เนˆเธฐ(sร -wร t-dii khรข)
