Hi everybody! Iโ€™m Kittaya.
Welcome to ThaiPod101.comโ€™s โ€œLearn Thai in 3 minutes.โ€ The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai.
In the last lesson we learned how to count in Thai. I hope you spent some time practicing because that will come in handy in this lesson. Weโ€™re going to learn how to go shopping in Thailand!
Before we go, you need to know how to say โ€œHow much is it?โ€
เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i?)
If youโ€™re a man, add เธ„เธฃเธฑเธš(khrรกp) to make this more polite. if youโ€™re a woman, add เธ„เธฐ(khรก)
[slowly] เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)?
Are you ready to go shopping in Thailand? Letโ€™s go!
If you see something you like and want to ask how much it costs, the first thing you should say isโ€ฆเธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฐ(KhวŽaw-thรดot na khรก) if youโ€™re a woman or เธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฃเธฑเธš(KhวŽaw-thรดot na khrรกp) if youโ€™re a man.
Do you remember what that means? "Excuse me!"
If you want to be more specific when asking "how much is this...?" referring to a certain type of object, we first need to add that noun. For example, "hat" is โ€œเธซเธกเธงเธ(mรนuak)โ€. Then we add the classifier for the noun. This is similar to how we say โ€œtwo loaves of breadโ€ in English instead of โ€œtwo breadsโ€, except *all* nouns in Thai have these classifiers. The classifier of hat is โ€œเนƒเธš(bai)โ€. And finally, the word โ€œเธ™เธตเน‰(nรญi)โ€ which means โ€œThisโ€.
เธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฐ เธซเธกเธงเธเนƒเธšเธ™เธตเน‰เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆเธ„เธฐ(KhวŽaw-thรดot nรก khรก, mรนuak bai nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? "Excuse me, how much is this hat?"
[slowly] เธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฐ เธซเธกเธงเธเนƒเธšเธ™เธตเน‰เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆเธ„เธฐ(KhวŽaw-thรดot nรก khรก, mรนuak bai nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)?
And โ€œskirtโ€ is โ€œเธเธฃเธฐเน‚เธ›เธฃเธ‡(grร -bproong)โ€. The classifier of skirt is โ€œเธ•เธฑเธง(dtuua)โ€
เธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฐ เธเธฃเธฐเน‚เธ›เธฃเธ‡เธ•เธฑเธงเธ™เธตเน‰เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆเธ„เธฐ(KhวŽaw-thรดot nรก khรก, grร -bproong dtuua nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? "Excuse me, how much is this skirt?"
[slowly] เธ‚เธญเน‚เธ—เธฉเธ™เธฐเธ„เธฐ เธเธฃเธฐเน‚เธ›เธฃเธ‡เธ•เธฑเธงเธ™เธตเน‰เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆเธ„เธฐ(KhวŽaw-thรดot nรก khรก, grร -bproong dtuua nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)?
At this point the shop clerk will answer with a number and then the word for the currency in Thailand, which is the Baht:
เนƒเธšเธฅเธฐ...เธšเธฒเธ—(Bai lรก...bร at)
เธ•เธฑเธงเธฅเธฐ...เธšเธฒเธ—(Dtuua lรก...bร at)
For example:
เนƒเธšเธฅเธฐเน€เธเน‰เธฒเธชเธดเธšเน€เธเน‰เธฒเธšเธฒเธ—(Bai lรก gรขao-sรฌp gรขao bร at) (99 Baht)
เธ•เธฑเธงเธฅเธฐเธซเน‰เธฒเธชเธดเธšเนเธ›เธ”เธšเธฒเธ—(Dtuua lรก hรขa-sรฌp bpร aet bร at) (58 Baht)!
What number is เธซเธเธชเธดเธšเธซเน‰เธฒ(Hรฒk-sรฌp hรขa)? Do you remember from the last lesson? Itโ€™s "sixty-five"! เธซเธเธชเธดเธšเธซเน‰เธฒเธšเธฒเธ—(hรฒk-sรฌp hรขa bร at), "It costs sixty-five Baht."
Now itโ€™s time for Kittayaโ€™s Quick Tips.
Remember, that it is always polite to add เธ„เธฐ(khรก) after เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ(raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)? if you are a woman or เธ„เธฃเธฑเธš(khrรกp) after it if youโ€™re a man. However, in casual situations, you can omit these and just say: เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ(raa-khaa thรขo-rร i?), which means โ€œHow much?โ€
[slowly] เธฃเธฒเธ„เธฒเน€เธ—เนˆเธฒเน„เธซเธฃเนˆ(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)?
At this point, can you count Thai Baht? We are going to learn how to do this and much more in the next lesson!
Iโ€™ll be waiting for you in our next Thai in 3 minutes lesson.
See you next time เธชเธงเธฑเธชเธ”เธตเธ„เนˆเธฐ(Sร -wร t-dii khรข)
