Hi everybody! Iโm Kittaya. |
Welcome to ThaiPod101.comโs โLearn Thai in 3 minutes.โ The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Thai. |
In the last lesson we learned how to count in Thai. I hope you spent some time practicing because that will come in handy in this lesson. Weโre going to learn how to go shopping in Thailand! |
Before we go, you need to know how to say โHow much is it?โ |
เธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i?) |
If youโre a man, add เธเธฃเธฑเธ(khrรกp) to make this more polite. if youโre a woman, add เธเธฐ(khรก) |
[slowly] เธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)? |
Are you ready to go shopping in Thailand? Letโs go! |
If you see something you like and want to ask how much it costs, the first thing you should say isโฆเธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ(Khวaw-thรดot na khรก) if youโre a woman or เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฃเธฑเธ(Khวaw-thรดot na khrรกp) if youโre a man. |
Do you remember what that means? "Excuse me!" |
If you want to be more specific when asking "how much is this...?" referring to a certain type of object, we first need to add that noun. For example, "hat" is โเธซเธกเธงเธ(mรนuak)โ. Then we add the classifier for the noun. This is similar to how we say โtwo loaves of breadโ in English instead of โtwo breadsโ, except *all* nouns in Thai have these classifiers. The classifier of hat is โเนเธ(bai)โ. And finally, the word โเธเธตเน(nรญi)โ which means โThisโ. |
เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ เธซเธกเธงเธเนเธเธเธตเนเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเนเธเธฐ(Khวaw-thรดot nรก khรก, mรนuak bai nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? "Excuse me, how much is this hat?" |
[slowly] เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ เธซเธกเธงเธเนเธเธเธตเนเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเนเธเธฐ(Khวaw-thรดot nรก khรก, mรนuak bai nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? |
And โskirtโ is โเธเธฃเธฐเนเธเธฃเธ(grร -bproong)โ. The classifier of skirt is โเธเธฑเธง(dtuua)โ |
เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ เธเธฃเธฐเนเธเธฃเธเธเธฑเธงเธเธตเนเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเนเธเธฐ(Khวaw-thรดot nรก khรก, grร -bproong dtuua nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? "Excuse me, how much is this skirt?" |
[slowly] เธเธญเนเธเธฉเธเธฐเธเธฐ เธเธฃเธฐเนเธเธฃเธเธเธฑเธงเธเธตเนเธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเนเธเธฐ(Khวaw-thรดot nรก khรก, grร -bproong dtuua nรญi raa-khaa thรขo-rร i khรก)? |
At this point the shop clerk will answer with a number and then the word for the currency in Thailand, which is the Baht: |
เนเธเธฅเธฐ...เธเธฒเธ(Bai lรก...bร at) |
เธเธฑเธงเธฅเธฐ...เธเธฒเธ(Dtuua lรก...bร at) |
For example: |
เนเธเธฅเธฐเนเธเนเธฒเธชเธดเธเนเธเนเธฒเธเธฒเธ(Bai lรก gรขao-sรฌp gรขao bร at) (99 Baht) |
เธเธฑเธงเธฅเธฐเธซเนเธฒเธชเธดเธเนเธเธเธเธฒเธ(Dtuua lรก hรขa-sรฌp bpร aet bร at) (58 Baht)! |
What number is เธซเธเธชเธดเธเธซเนเธฒ(Hรฒk-sรฌp hรขa)? Do you remember from the last lesson? Itโs "sixty-five"! เธซเธเธชเธดเธเธซเนเธฒเธเธฒเธ(hรฒk-sรฌp hรขa bร at), "It costs sixty-five Baht." |
Now itโs time for Kittayaโs Quick Tips. |
Remember, that it is always polite to add เธเธฐ(khรก) after เธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน(raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)? if you are a woman or เธเธฃเธฑเธ(khrรกp) after it if youโre a man. However, in casual situations, you can omit these and just say: เธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน(raa-khaa thรขo-rร i?), which means โHow much?โ |
[slowly] เธฃเธฒเธเธฒเนเธเนเธฒเนเธซเธฃเน(Raa-khaa thรขo-rร i)? |
At this point, can you count Thai Baht? We are going to learn how to do this and much more in the next lesson! |
Iโll be waiting for you in our next Thai in 3 minutes lesson. |
See you next time เธชเธงเธฑเธชเธเธตเธเนเธฐ(Sร -wร t-dii khรข) |
