INTRODUCTION
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 24 - Are Beauty Clinics Popular in Thailand? I'm Ja.
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about regularly occurring actions.
Ohm: This conversation takes place at a shopping mall.
Ja: And it’s between two friends, Nok and Dao.
Ohm: The speakers are friends, so they'll be using casual Thai.
Ja: Alright, let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Ja: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
ดาว : ฉันสิวขึ้นเต็มหน้าเลย ทำไมหน้าเธอใสจังไม่มีสิวเลย
นก : ก็ฉันไปคลินิกความงามเป็นประจำ
ดาว : เขาทำอะไรให้บ้างเหรอ

Ja: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
ดาว : ฉันสิวขึ้นเต็มหน้าเลย ทำไมหน้าเธอใสจังไม่มีสิวเลย
Ja: I've got pimples all over my face. Why is your face so clear? You don’t have any pimples!
นก : ก็ฉันไปคลินิกความงามเป็นประจำ
Ja: Well, I go to the beauty clinic regularly.
ดาว : เขาทำอะไรให้บ้างเหรอ
Ja: What do they do for you?
นก : ปกติก็ขัดหน้า นวดหน้า รักษาสิว ตามโปรแกรมที่เขามีน่ะแหละ
Ja: Usually, they scrub my face, massage my face, and take care of acne according to their program.
ดาว : น่าสนใจ วันหลังพาฉันไปลองบ้างนะ
Ja: Interesting. Take me to try it some day.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: There seem to be a ton of beauty clinics around these days.
Ohm: I know. In some shopping centers you'll see a bunch of beauty clinics all next to each other.
Ja: And there are enough customers for them all to stay in business?
Ohm: Sure, why not? Everyone wants to look good. Some clinics are even expanding to set up branches in Laos and Cambodia.
Ja: So I guess it's becoming big business. What else do they treat besides acne?
Ohm: All sorts of things, but I think programs for losing weight and skin whitening are the most popular.
Ja: I see. Okay, let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we'll look at is...
Ohm: น่าสนใจ
Ja: This is an adjective that means "interesting," and it's made up of two parts.
Ohm: น่า (nâa) is a prefix that means "worthy of," and สนใจ (sǒn-jai) is the verb "to be interested." So together, น่าสนใจ (nâa-sǒn-jai) means "worthy of being interested in" or "interesting."
Ja: And since this is an adjective, it will typically follow the noun that it describes.
Ohm: That’s right. For example...
หนังสือเล่มนี้น่าสนใจมาก
nǎng-sǔue lêm níi nâa-sǒn-jai mâak.
Ja: "This book is very interesting." OK, what's the next phrase?
Ohm: วันหลัง
Ja: This is a noun that means "some day after this" or "the future." It's also made up of two words.
Ohm: วัน (wan) is the noun "day," and หลัง (lǎng) is an adjective meaning “after” or "later." So วันหลัง (wan-lǎng) means some unspecified "later day" in the future. For example...
วันหลังเราจะไปเที่ยวกันนะ
wan-lǎng rao jà bpai thîiao gan ná.
Ja: "We'll go travel together in the future." Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express that an action occurs "regularly" or "usually."
Ohm: There are several different words that we can use to say that something takes place "regularly" or "usually" in Thai.
Ja: What's the first one?
Ohm: First is เป็นประจำ (bpen bprà-jam), which is made up of two words. เป็น (bpen) is the verb "to be," and ประจำ (bprà-jam) is an adjective meaning "regular."
Ja: So together, it makes the adverb "regularly."
Ohm: That's right.
Ja: And how do we use it in a sentence?
Ohm: เป็นประจำ is used by placing it after the verb. There was one example from the conversation...
ก็ฉันไปคลินิกความงามเป็นประจำ
gâaw chǎn bpai khlii-nìk khwaam-ngaam bpen bprà-jam.
Ja: "Well, I go to the beauty clinic regularly."
Ohm: In this sentence, คลินิกความงาม (khlii-nìk khwaam-ngaam) means "beauty clinic," so the phrase ไปคลินิกความงามเป็นประจำ (bpai khlii-nìk khwaam-ngaam bpen bprà-jam) means...
Ja: "to go to the beauty clinic regularly." What's our next phrase for saying "usually"?
Ohm: Next is ปกติ (bpòk-gà-dtì), which can mean "ordinary," "usual," or "normal."
Ja: I've heard this word pronounced two different ways. Are they both correct?
Ohm: Yes, some people pronounce it (bpòk-gà-dtì) and some say (bpà-gà-dtì). Either one is OK to use.
Ja: And how is this used in a sentence?
Ohm: ปกติ (bpòk-gà-dtì) can be used at the beginning of a sentence as in this example from our conversation...
ปกติก็ขัดหน้า นวดหน้า รักษาสิว ตามโปรแกรมที่เขามีน่ะแหละ
bpòk-gà-dtì gâaw khàt nâa nûuat nâa rák-sǎa sǐu dtaam bproo-graaem thîi khǎo mii nâ làe.
Ja: "Usually, they scrub my face, massage my face, and take care of acne according to their program."
Ohm: So here, we began the sentence with ปกติ (bpòk-gà-dtì), which is just like putting "usually" at the start of the English version.
Ja: OK. Is that the only way to use this word?
Ohm: No, it’s not the only way. ปกติ (bpòk-gà-dtì) can also go after the verb in a sentence if we also have the verb เป็น (bpen). For example...
คนไทยทานข้าวใช้ช้อนกับส้อมเป็นปกติ
khon-thai thaan khâao chái cháawn gàp sâawm bpen bpòk-gà-dtì.
Ja: "Thai people usually eat rice with a spoon and fork." What's our next way to say "usually"?
Ohm: The next one is ส่วนมาก (sùuan-mâak). It also means "usually", and is used at the beginning of a sentence. For example...
ส่วนมากฉันไม่ดื่มกาแฟ
sùuan-mâak chǎn mâi dùuem gaa-faae.
Ja: "Usually, I don't drink coffee." Do we have any more phrases to talk about?
Ohm: Just one more, the phrase มักจะ (mák jà), which can be translated as "inclined to" or "frequently."
Ja: How do you use this one?
Ohm: มักจะ (mák jà) goes before a verb. For example...
เดือนตุลาคมฝนมักจะตกหนัก
duuean-dtù-laa-khom fǒn mák jà dtòk nàk.
Ja: "It usually rains heavily in October."
Ohm: In this example, มักจะ (mák jà) is placed before the verb ตก (dtòk), meaning "to fall." That gives us the phrase ฝนมักจะตก
Ja: Meaning..."rain usually falls".

Outro

Ohm: Well, it looks like that's all the time we have for this lesson.
Ja: Be sure to check out the lesson notes for more examples and explanations.
Ohm: Thanks for listening, and we'll see you in the next lesson.
Ja: See you next time, bye!
Ohm: แล้วเจอกันครับ สวัสดีครับ
