INTRODUCTION
Ohm: สวัสดีครับ
Ja: Hello, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 7: “Are You Sure that Thai Person is Really a Woman?” I'm Ja.
Ohm: And I'm Ohm. What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to refer to strangers.
Ohm: This conversation takes place at a cafe.
Ja: It’s between two friends, Nok and Dao.
Ohm: The speakers are friends, so they'll be using casual Thai.
Ja: Alright, let's listen to their conversation.

Lesson conversation

ดาว : ดูผู้ชายคนนั้นดิ หล่อมาก!
นก : เขากำลังเดินมาหาผู้หญิงคนนี้ อาจจะเป็นแฟนกัน
ดาว: ดูดีๆ เธอ คนนั้นไม่ใช่ผู้หญิงนะ
นก: เป็นกะเทยเหรอ! สวยเหมือนผู้หญิงจริงๆ เลย
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
ดาว : ดูผู้ชายคนนั้นดิ หล่อมาก!
นก : เขากำลังเดินมาหาผู้หญิงคนนี้ อาจจะเป็นแฟนกัน
ดาว: ดูดีๆ เธอ คนนั้นไม่ใช่ผู้หญิงนะ
นก: เป็นกะเทยเหรอ! สวยเหมือนผู้หญิงจริงๆ เลย
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
ดาว : ดูผู้ชายคนนั้นดิ หล่อมาก!
: Look at that guy—so handsome!
นก : เขากำลังเดินมาหาผู้หญิงคนนี้ อาจจะเป็นแฟนกัน
: He's walking over to meet this lady. Maybe they're a couple.
ดาว: ดูดีๆ เธอ คนนั้นไม่ใช่ผู้หญิงนะ
: Look carefully. That person isn't a lady.
นก: เป็นกะเทยเหรอ! สวยเหมือนผู้หญิงจริงๆ เลย
: It's a ladyboy? She's as beautiful as a real woman.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Ladyboys are really common in Thailand.
Ohm: Yeah, I think they're pretty well accepted in society here. Ja, do you think they face any discrimination in Thailand?
Ja: Well, it's not common to find them working in leadership positions, like as school teachers or politicians.
Ohm: Right. More often, you find ladyboys working in retail, or the service and entertainment industries.
Ja: Yeah, now that you mention it, I think every time I walk into a Thai department store, half of the girls working at the makeup counters are actually men.
Ohm: That’s right.
Ja: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the key words and phrases from this lesson. The first one is…
Ohm: เป็นแฟนกัน
Ja: This phrase means "to be dating" or "to be boyfriend and girlfriend." It’s composed of three words.
Ohm: First is the verb "to be," เป็น (bpen). This is followed by แฟน (faaen), which can mean either "boyfriend" or "girlfriend." And the last word, กัน (gan), means "together." So you’d use this when talking about both people as a couple.
Ja: Yes, and since แฟน (faaen) can be used with either gender, you can say เป็นแฟนกัน (bpen faaen gan) when talking about a straight, gay, or lesbian couple. Okay, Ohm, what's the next vocabulary word?
Ohm: กะเทย
Ja: We talked about ladyboys a little bit in the introduction.
Ohm: Right, The speakers will usually say "ladyboy" in English. But กะเทย can actually cover many types of people.
Ja: Usually it refers to transvestites, male-to-female transsexuals, and cross-dressers. But you'll also hear this word used to describe effeminate homosexual men who don't attempt to dress as a woman.
Ohm: Right. If they’re born in a man's body but feel like a woman at heart, then they'd be considered กะเทย.
Ja: Okay, now let's move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about "this person," "that person," and "that person over there."
Ohm: When you want to point out somebody in a crowd or speak about somebody whose name you don't know, here are some helpful expressions to use: คนนี้ (khon níi)
Ja: Meaning "This person."
Ohm: คนนั้น (khon nán)
Ja: "That person."
Ohm: And คนโน้น (khon nóon).
Ja: "That person over there." So, the difference between these three phrases is one of physical distance, but how do you break them up exactly?
Ohm: It's somewhat relative and up to the feeling of the speaker.
Ja: That’s right. Generally, คนนี้ (khon níi) is used for somebody nearby. คนนั้น (khon nán) would be used for someone who’s located a bit further away, and คนโน้น (khon nóon) is used for someone located even further away. Ohm, how about we look at one of the examples we had in the conversation?
Ohm: Sure. We had the sentence, คนนั้นไม่ใช่ผู้หญิงนะ.
Ja: "That person isn't a lady."
Ohm: In this sentence, คนนั้น (khon nán) was used to mean "that person" since คน (khon) is the noun "person."
Ja: What if we wanted to use a different person word, like "man," "woman," "boy," or "girl"?
Ohm: You'd still have to include คน (khon) because it's the classifier used for talking about people. In this situation, the pattern is the person word, plus คน (khon), plus นี้ (níi), นั้น (nán), or โน้น (nóon).
Ja: How about we look at a few examples of these phrases?
Ohm: Sure! Here’s one- ผู้ชายคนนั้น (phûu-chaai khon nán).
Ja: "That man."
Ohm: ผู้หญิงคนนี้ (phûu-yǐng khon níi)
Ja: "This woman."
Ohm: เด็กผู้ชายคนโน้น (dèk-phûu-chaai khon nóon)
Ja: "That boy over there." And how about one more?
Ohm: เด็กผู้หญิงคนนั้น (dèk-phûu-yǐng khon nán)
Ja: "That girl." Now how about we hear a couple of these in some sentences?
Ohm: Sure. From the conversation we had, ดูผู้ชายคนนั้นดิ หล่อมาก!
Ja: "Look at that guy—so handsome!" And one more...
Ohm: เขากำลังเดินมาหาผู้หญิงคนนี้
Ja: "He's walking over to meet this lady."
