สุชาดา: งั้นไปกันเลย
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: ngán bpai gan looei.)
Ben: All right, let's go.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, what’s the deal with all the jewelry shops you see around town that have a bunch of gold chains on display? Are Thai women really into gold jewelry?
Pim: I’d say Thai women are into every type of jewelry, just women anywhere else. But I think you are talking about gold shops. They are mostly run by Chinese-Thai families. Thai people like to buy gold as a kind of investment.
Ben: Well, how come so much is sold as gold chains and not coins or bars?
Pim: Those are no fun. Who wants a bunch of coins just sitting in a box somewhere. But seriously, I think it comes from tradition. A lot of times women get gold jewelry when they get married. For a lot of people, their gold can be used in an emergency if they have no money.
Ben: Oh, I see. Do men own gold too?
Pim: Some do. If you have a lucky Buddha amulet it’s good to hang it around your neck with a gold chain.
Ben: Interesting. OK, now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. First we have...
Pim: มั้ง (máng)
Ben: This is an adverb that can mean “perhaps”. How was it used in the conversation, Khru Pim?
Pim: เป็นวันหยุดมั้ง (bpen wan-yùt máng.)
Ben: “I guess because it’s a holiday.” or “Perhaps because it’s a holiday.” I noticed that มั้ง (máng) comes at the end of the sentence here. Is that usually the case?
Pim: Yes, it is. มั้ง (máng) always goes at the end of a statement.
Ben: Got it. Now what is the next phrase?
Pim: เยอะแยะ (yóe-yáe)
Ben: This is an adverb meaning “many”.
Pim: That’s right. เยอะ (yóe) by itself also means “many”. But using เยอะแยะ (yóe-yáe) intensifies the description a little bit.
Ben: I see. So เยอะแยะ (yóe-yáe) sounds like more than just เยอะ (yóe.)
Pim: Right.
Ben: And what is the final phrase?
Pim: ของใหม่ (khǎawng mài)
Ben: This means “new ones” or “a new one”.
Pim: Exactly. ของ (khǎawng) has two meanings in Thai. Sometimes it’s used to show possession, like the word “of”. And other times it means “thing”. In this case, ของ (khǎawng) means “thing”.
Ben : So ของใหม่ (khǎawng mài) is “a new thing” or “a new one”. OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using the verb เข้า (khâo) to express “entering”.
Pim: เข้า (khâo) is the verb “to enter”. But it’s used in Thai in many situations where you wouldn’t necessarily use the word “enter” in English.
Ben: What type of situations would those be?
Pim: Well, let’s look at the examples from the conversation. The first one was...ทำไมคนเข้าห้างเยอะจัง
(tham-mai khon khâo hâang yóe jang.)
Ben: “Why are there so many people at the shopping mall?”
Pim: In this case, เข้าห้าง (khâo hâang) literally means “to enter the mall”.
Ben: In English it sounds funny to ask “Why have so many people entered the mall?” But in Thai it’s common to express that people or animals are already present at some place by saying they “entered” there.
Pim: That’s right. The next sentence follows the same idea. Suchada said...
เห็นคนเข้าเยอะเลย (hěn khon khâo yóe looei.)
Ben: “I see a lot of people in there.” So here again, we have คนเข้า (khon khâo) meaning “people entered”. But all it really means is that there are people inside.
Pim: There’s a lot of other expressions that use เข้า (khâo.) For instance, แถว thǎaeo is a noun that means a “row”. So can you guess the meaning of เข้าแถว (khâo-thǎaeo)?
Ben: Well, let’s see...That would be “to enter a row”, so I guess it means to “get in line”.
Pim: Good job. Here’s another one. ใจ (jai) can mean “heart” or “mind”, so then what’s the meaning of เข้าใจ (khâo-jai?)
Ben: Well, that one is too easy. I already knew that เข้าใจ (khâo-jai) means “to understand”. But I never thought about how the word was composed before.
Pim: Isn’t it interesting? When something “enters your mind” it means you “understand”. How about this one...เข้าเมือง (khâo-muueng)?
Ben: Well, I know เมือง (muueang) is “city”, so I guess it means “to go into town”.
Pim: Yes, that’s one thing it can mean. However, เมือง (muueang) can also mean “country”. Therefore, the other meaning of เข้าเมือง (khâo-muueng) is “to immigrate”.
Ben: OK, that makes sense. Now let’s review. Listeners, repeat the terms after Khru Pim, and see if you remember their meanings. First is...
Pim: เข้าใจ (khâo-jai)
Ben: (pause) “to understand”. Next...
Pim: เข้าแถว (khâo-thǎaeo)
Ben: (pause) “to get in line”. And last...
Pim: เข้าเมือง (khâo-muueng)
Ben: (pause) “to immigrate”. Did you get them all right? Be sure to check out the lesson notes where we have more terms formed with เข้า (khâo.)

Outro

Ben: And that’s it for this lesson. Thank you for listening! See you later!
Pim: แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (Læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀ kh̀a)
