Ben: Yes, we do. Thank you for shopping here. Please come again.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, it seems like these ladies really like shopping for clothes.
Pim: Well, of course. I think all women do. And you know, Thailand is a great place to go shopping. There are so many choices. Even just walking down the sidewalk you might see someone with some cute dresses for sale.
Ben: Yeah, I’ve noticed that by Siam Square in the evenings. It gets a little hard to even walk on the sidewalk because so many clothing vendors set up shop.
Pim: I think you can get really good deals because the seller doesn’t have to pay to rent out a whole shop. So they can still make money selling shirts or skirts for 199 baht apiece.
Ben: That is pretty cheap. But how do you pick the right size? There’s obviously no fitting room on the sidewalk.
Pim: Well, you just have to basically know what size fits you. Most things just come in size S, M, L, or XL.
Ben: I see. And I take it they don’t accept credit cards?
Pim: You’d have a hard time finding a sidewalk vendor who takes plastic. For that you’re better off sticking to the big malls.
Ben: OK, now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we’ll look at is...
Pim: คล้าย ๆ กัน (khláai-khláai gan)
Ben: This phrase means “similar to each other”. The two things that you are comparing would either have been stated prior to this or would be understood already. What was the example from the conversation?
Pim: มีชุดอื่นที่คล้าย ๆ กันทางด้านนี้นะคะ
(mii chút ùuen thîi khláai-khláai gan thaang dâan-níi ná khá.(
Ben: “We have other similar outfits on this side.” So in this case, the items being compared are the “other outfits” mentioned, along with the outfit that the mannequin was wearing.
Pim: That’s right. Now there’s another phrase you can use. And that is คล้ายๆกับ khláai-khláai gàp meaning “similar to”.
Ben: Do you use it the same as คล้าย ๆ กัน (khláai-khláai gan) ?
Pim: The word order is a little different. คล้าย ๆ กับ (khláai-khláai gàp), is placed between the two items being compared. For example...
ชุดนี้คล้าย ๆ กับชุดนั้น
(chút níi khláai-khláai gàp chút nán.)
Ben: “This outfit is similar to that outfit.” Alright, now next we have a word...
Pim: ตัว (dtuua)
Ben: This is a noun that means “body”, but it’s also used as a classifier for articles of clothing that resemble the shape of a body, such as shirts and pants.
Pim: Exactly. ตัว (dtuua) is also a classifier for animals, numbers, letters, and some furniture like chairs and desks. For example, I could say...
แมวตัวนี้ชอบนอนบนเสื้อตัวนั้น (maaeo dtuua níi châawp naawn bon sûuea dtuua nán.)
Ben: “This cat likes to sleep on top of that shirt.” And the last phrase we have is...
Pim: โอกาสหน้าเชิญใหม่ (oo-gàat nâa chooen mài)
Ben: You hear this all the time, but you’ll never need to say it unless you get a job in the service industry.
Pim: That’s right. โอกาสหน้าเชิญใหม่ (oo-gàat nâa chooen mài) just means “Please come again!”
Ben: And now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using นอกจากนี้ (nâawk-jàak-níi) and นอกจากนั้ (nâawk-jàak-nán) to say “besides this” or “besides that”.
Pim: นอกจาก (nâawk-jàak) is a preposition that means “besides” or “other than”. It is composed from two words, นอก (nâawk), meaning “outside”, and จาก( jàak), meaning “from”.
Ben: So another way to understand นอกจาก (nâawk-jàak) would be to translate it as “apart from”.
Pim: Yes, that’s a good way to think of it. We can combine นอกจาก (nâawk-jàak) with นี้ (níi) for “this” or นั้น (nán) for “that” to say “besides this” or “besides that”.
Ben: And these phrases should come at the beginning of a sentence just as they would in English.
Pim: That’s right. For example, in the conversation we had...
นอกจากนี้ยังมีชุดอื่นที่คล้าย ๆ กันทางด้านนี้นะคะ
(nàawk-jàak-níi yang mii chút ùuen thîi khláai-khláai gan thaang dâan-níi ná khá.)
Ben: “Besides this we have other similar outfits on this side.” Ok, so this sentence began with nàawk-jàak-níi or “Besides this”. Did we have any examples using “Besides that”?
Pim: We sure did. There was the sentence...นอกจากนั้นยังช่วยพรางหุ่นอีกด้วย
(nàawk-jàak-nán yang chûuai phraang hûn ìik dûuai.)
Ben: “Besides that, it also helps hide your body shape.” So Khru Pim, is it possible to use nàawk-jàak by itself without “this” or “that”?
Pim: Yes, it is. นอกจาก (nâawk-jàak) can be used by itself in the beginning or middle of a sentence to say “besides”, “except”, or “unless”. Let me give you an example...
เขาไม่มีทางกลับมานอกจากจะมีปาฏิหาริย์
(khǎo mâi mii thaang glàp-maa nâawk-jàak jà mii bpaa-dtì-hǎan)
Ben: “He will not come back, unless there's a miracle.” So in that sentence, นอกจาก came in the middle. How about one where it starts a sentence.
Pim: Alright. How about this? นอกจากคุณพ่อทุกคนอยากกินส้มตำ
(nâawk-jàak khun-phâaw thúk khon yàak gin sôm-dtam.)
Ben: “Other than father, everyone wants to eat spicy papaya salad.” Those two sentences sounded pretty good for speaking practice. So how about we hear them both one more time. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim.
“He will not come back, unless there's a miracle.”
Pim: เขาไม่มีทางกลับมานอกจากจะมีปาฏิหาริย์
(khǎo mâi mii thaang glàp-maa nâawk-jàak jà mii bpaa-dtì-hǎan.)
Ben: (pause) OK, and now the second one. “Other than father, everyone wants to eat spicy papaya salad.”
Pim: นอกจากคุณพ่อทุกคนอยากกินส้มตำ
(nâawk-jàak khun-phâaw thúk khon yàak gin sôm-dtam.) (pause)
