POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, it looks like Suchada got some special treatment from the laundry lady.
Pim: Yeah, it helps to be a regular customer and to be on good terms with the shop owner. You might luck out like that every once in awhile.
Ben: I think I got special service like that once.
Pim: Oh, how is that?
Ben: I always eat noodles from the same cart on the street near my apartment. The noodle guy was always really friendly to me, and after a few weeks of eating there regularly I started to notice that the portions seemed to be getting bigger.
Pim: Maybe he just thought you need to eat more because you’re a farang!
Ben: Come on, I’m not that big!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we’ll look at is...
Pim: ป้า bpâa
Ben: This is a word that means “aunt”, specifically an older sister of one of your parents.
Pim: That’s right, but we also use it a lot as a pronoun for a woman who is old enough to be your aunt. It can mean “I”, “you”, or “she” depending on who is doing the talking.
Ben: I see. So in the conversation, the laundry lady used ป้า (bpâa) in reference to herself, and Suchada used ป้า (bpâa) in reference to the laundry lady. And the next word we’ll look at is a little similar...
Pim: หนู (nǔu)
Ben: So หนู (nǔu) actually means “mouse”. But they weren’t talking about a mouse in the conversation.
Pim: No, they weren’t. หนู (nǔu) is also used as a pronoun to refer to someone who is much younger than the other speaker.
Ben: I see, so children can use หนู nǔu to refer to themselves.
Pim: Yes. And conversely, adults can address children using หนู nǔu.
Ben: So Suchada used it because she’s younger than the laundry lady. But why did the laundry lady call her หนูดาว (nǔu daao)?
Pim: Oh, that’s just because ดาว (daao) is Suchada’s nickname. We use nicknames much more often than real names. So หนูดาว (nǔu daao) is just like “Miss Dao.”
Ben: OK, I got it. Now what is the final phrase?
Pim: ลัดคิว (lát-khiu)
Ben: This means “to jump ahead in line”.
Pim: Right. ลัด (lát) is a verb that means “to cut across” or “to take a short cut”. And we just borrowed คิว (khiu) from the English word “queue”.
Ben: I think “queue” is used more in Britain, so for our American listeners that just means “waiting in line” or “waiting your turn”. So then, ลัดคิว (lát-khiu) just means “to cut ahead in the queue” or “to skip up ahead in line.”
Pim: Hey Khun Ben, how about we skip ahead to the grammar section now?
Ben: Good idea.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using อย่าง yàang to talk about the manner of doing things.
Pim: อย่าง yàang has a few different meanings, but one of them is “method”. We can combine อย่าง yàang with adjectives or adverbs to form new adverbs that describe a “method” or “way” of doing something.
Ben: What examples did we have in the conversation?
Pim: Well, there was this sentence...
แค่ไม่กี่นาทีก็สลายคราบออกได้อย่างง่ายดาย
(khâae mâi gìi naa-thii gâaw sà-lǎai khrâap àawk dâai yàang ngâai-daai.)
Ben: “In just a few minutes the stain will come out easily.” And the key part of this sentence for our purposes came right at the end.
Pim: That’s right. Actually, ง่ายดาย (ngâai-daai) already means “easily”. But we used อย่างง่ายดาย (yàang ngâai-daai) to mean “in an easy manner”.
Ben: I see. Were there any other examples in the conversation?
Pim: We also had this sentence...
เดี๋ยวป้าลัดคิวทำให้อย่างรวดเร็วเลย
(dǐiao bpâa lát khiu tham hâi yàang rûuat-reo looei.)
Ben: “I’ll bump you up to the top of my work to get it done quickly.” So the key part of this sentence was อย่างรวดเร็ว (yàang rûuat-reo.)
Pim: Here again, รวดเร็ว (rûuat-reo) already means “quickly”, but อย่างรวดเร็ว (yàang rûuat-reo) specifically means “in a speedy manner”.
Ben: Now there are really tons of adverbs you can make with อย่าง (yàang) aren’t there?
Pim: Oh yes. You know สวยงาม (sǔuai-ngaam) means “beautiful”. So can you guess the meaning of อย่างสวยงาม (yàang sǔuai-ngaam)?
Ben: “beautifully”
Pim: Correct! Say, that reminds me of another one. ถูกต้อง (thùuk-dtâwng) means “correct”. So can you guess the meaning of อย่างถูกต้อง (yàang thùuk-dtâwng)?
Ben: “correctly”
Pim: Very good! I think in no time at all you’ll be speaking Thai อย่างคล่องแคล่ว (yàang khlâwng-khlâeo.)
Ben: Does that mean “fluently”?
Pim: ถูกต้องค่ะ (T̄hūk t̂xng kh̀a) That’s correct!
Ben: OK, how about we review some of these expressions. Listeners please repeat after Khru Pim. First “easily”...
Pim: อย่างง่ายดาย (yàang ngâai-daai)
Ben: (pause) Next “quickly”...
Pim: อย่างรวดเร็ว (yàang rûuat-reo)
Ben: (pause) Then we had “beautifully”...
Pim: อย่างสวยงาม (yàang sǔuai-ngaam)
Ben: (pause) OK, then “correctly”...
Pim: อย่างถูกต้อง (yàang thùuk-dtâwng)
Ben: (pause) And finally “fluently”...
Pim: อย่างคล่องแคล่ว (yàang khlâwng-khlâeo)
Ben: (pause) Be sure to check out the lesson notes too, where you’ll find more expressions that we didn’t have time to cover.
