| Ben: The conversation is between co-workers Suchada and Fon, and their boss. |
| Pim: The speakers are of unequal status, therefore Suchada and Fon will be speaking polite Thai towards their boss. |

| Pim: Yeah, I know what you mean. I never really liked to see that. But at least they’ve started to tone it down in the last couple years. |
| Ben: I guess they censor the images a little bit now, but they don’t really block out all that much. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to make out the shape of a dead body. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim: The first phrase is ทำ...(something)...ให้เสร็จ (tham)...(something)...hâi sèt |
| Ben: This pattern means “to do (something) to completion.” |
| Pim: Yes, that’s right. ทำ (tham) is the verb “to do” or “to make”. And ให้เสร็จ (hâi sèt) means “so that it gets finished” or “until completion”. |
| Ben: Then whatever it is you’re making or doing just goes in the middle, right? |
| Pim: You got it! |
| Ben: Can you use it in a sentence so we see how it all fits together? |
| Pim: No problem! How about this sentence... |
| คุณทำขนมให้เสร็จนะคะ |
| (khun tham khà-nǒm hâi sèt ná khá.) |
| Ben: “Make the snacks until they’re finished!” So in that sentence we had that noun khà-nǒm, or “snacks” as something being made. Now how about a sentence where it is an action being done? |
| Pim: Sure. How is this one... |

| Ben: “I need to finish writing before I go out.” Did you notice that the action is still a noun technically? |
| Pim: That’s right. การเขียน (gaan-khǐian) meaning “writing”, is a gerund, or a verbal noun. If you want to review gerunds make sure to go back and listen to lesson 2 again sometime. |
| Ben: OK, and the other phrase is... |
| Pim: ร่วมมือกัน (rûuam-muue gan) |
| Ben: This means “to cooperate together”. |
| Pim: Yes. ร่วมมือ (rûuam-muue) is the verb “to cooperate”. And กัน (gan) means “together”. |
| Ben: I guess it is a little hard to cooperate all on your own. |
| Pim: Yeah, that’s pretty much impossible. We must ร่วมมือกัน (rûuam-muue gan) |
| Ben: “cooperate together”. Alright, let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Ben: The focus of this lesson is using ไม่ว่า (mâi wâa) to say “no matter”. |
| Pim: ไม่ว่า (mâi wâa) is a useful preposition that means “regardless of” or “no matter”. This phrase is used at the start of a sentence, and depending on the words that follow, it could also mean “whatever”, “whenever”, or “however”. |
| Ben: How did we see it used in the conversation? |
| Pim: We had one sentence where the boss said... |

| Ben: “No matter what everyone is doing now, you must help to finish this news first.” So here the key phrase came right at the start of the sentence. |
| Pim: Yes, it did. ไม่ว่าใครจะทำอะไรอยู่ (mâi wâa khrai jà tham à-rai yùu) meant “Regardless of what anyone is doing...” Then later in the conversation the boss uses ไม่ว่า mâi wâa again when he says... |

| Pim: Right. ไม่ว่าจะยังไง (mâi wâa jà yang-ngai) meant “No matter how”. |
| Ben: So Khru Pim, earlier you said that ไม่ว่า (mâi wâa) can mean “whatever”, “whenever”, or “however” as well. |
| Pim: I did. Let’s take each of them one by one. If ไม่ว่า mâi wâa is followed by อะไร à-rai, or “what”, it takes the meaning of “whatever”. For example... |
