Ben: Right now news about celebrities is not as important as news about the flooding. Keep it for later. We still have other big news to put in.

Ben: I think we could just put a photo and headline on the front page first and later put the details in the entertainment section.
หัวหน้า: ทำไมล่ะ เด็กคนนี้ดังมากเลยเหรอ
(HǓUA-N A: tham-mai lâ. dèk khon níi dang mâak looei rǒoe.)
Ben: Why? Is this kid very popular?
สุชาดา: เป็นขวัญใจมหาชนที่กำลังอยู่ในช่วงโด่งดังสุดขีดเลยค่ะ
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: bpen khwǎn-jai má-hǎa-chon thîi gam-lang yùu nai chûuang dòongdang sùt khìit looei khâ.)
Ben: He’s an idol who is extremely popular right now.
หัวหน้า: ผมให้คุณตัดสินใจเอาเองก็แล้วกัน
(HǓUA-N A: phǒm hâi khun dtàt-sǐn-jai ao eeng gâaw láaeo gan.)
Ben: I’ll let you make the decision yourself.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, the teen idol they are talking about in the conversation is named Alex. That doesn’t sound like a very Thai name.
Pim: Well, these days Thai people have all sorts of nicknames. But I think it could be that this Alex guy is a ลูกครึ่ง (lûuk-khrûeng.)
Ben: You mean half Thai and half something else? How come so many celebrities are ลูกครึ่ง lûuk-khrûeng these days?
Pim: I think it has something to do with Thai peoples’ preference for lighter skin. They think people with a little bit of European features look better.
Ben: It’s kind of strange. You know a lot of westerners have an idea that a stereotypical Thai beauty has dark, tan skin; but you never see any girls like that in the Miss Thailand contest. Everyone is so pale!
Pim: Yeah, I guess you’re right. What’s that saying… “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”
Ben: That’s it. Well, let’s take a look now at the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is
Pim: เอาไว้ก่อน (ao wái gàawn)
Ben: This means “to save for later”.
Pim: เอาไว้ (ao wái) is two verbs together that mean “to take and to keep”. Then comes ก่อน gàawn, which means “before”.
Ben: So the literal meaning is “to take and keep it before”. But “save it for later” sounds more natural in English. Can we hear the phrase once more?
Pim: เอาไว้ก่อน (ao wái gàawn.)
Ben: Alright, what is the next phrase?
Pim: ก็แล้วกัน (gâaw láaeo gan)
Ben: This phrase means “as you like it”. It can be used at the end of a sentence to indicate that you are finished considering some topic. What was the example from the conversation?
Pim: The boss said...ผมให้คุณตัดสินใจเอาเองก็แล้วกัน
(phǒm hâi khun dtàt-sǐn-jai ao eeng gâaw láaeo gan.)
Ben: “I’ll let you make the decision yourself.” So here the boss is indicating that he’s made up his mind to allow Suchada to put the story wherever she sees fit. Can you come up with another example how this phrase could be used in everyday speech?
Pim: Umm...How about this. Let’s say you are trying to reach a bargain with a souvenir vendor. They offer you a price of 400 baht and you reply...
มันแพงไปหน่อย สามร้อยบาทก็แล้วกัน
(Ben phaaeng bpai nàwy. sǎam ráauy bàat gâaw láaeo gan.)
Ben: “That's a bit expensive. Let's call it 300 baht.” And what’s the last phrase?
Pim: ในช่วงโด่งดังสุดขีดเลย (nai chûuang dòong-dang sùt khìit looei)
Ben: This whole phrase basically just means “very famous”.
Pim: That’s right. โด่งดัง (dòong-dang) is a verb meaning “to be famous”. And สุดขีดเลย (sùt khìit looei) means “to the utter maximum”.
Ben: And we’ll go over this phrase a little more in the grammar section, which is coming up next.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using ช่วง chûuang to talk about periods or sections of things.
Pim: The word ช่วง (chûuang) is a noun that can mean “period”, “section”, “span”, “duration”, or “interval”. It is used to talk about sections of the day, parts of the year, and periods of one’s life. It is also used for talking about distances and areas.
Ben: The main use of ช่วง (chûuang) is for talking about periods of time, isn’t it?
Pim: Yes, that’s right.
Ben: Let’s start by looking at an example we had from the conversation. The boss said...
Pim: ในช่วงนี้ข่าวศิลปินดาราไม่สำคัญเท่ากับข่าวน้ำท่วมนะ (nai chûuang níi khàao sǐn-lá-bpin daa-raa mâi sǎm-khan thâo-gàp khàao náam-thûuam ná.)
Ben: “Right now news about celebrities is not as important as news about the flooding.” So here the important part is the prepositional phrase at the start of the sentence, ในช่วงนี้ (nai chûuang níi), which means “right now” or “at this time”. Another sentence we had in the conversation was…
Pim: เป็นขวัญใจมหาชนที่กำลังอยู่ในช่วงโด่งดังสุดขีดเลยค่ะ
(bpen khwǎn-jai má-hǎa-chon thîi gam-lang yùu nai chûuang dòong-dang sùt khìit looei khâ.)
Ben: “He’s an idol who is extremely popular right now.” But an attempt at a more literal translation might be “He’s an idol of the masses who is now in the moment of the most utterly famous.”
Pim: That’s quite a mouthful. But the important part for our grammar was
ในช่วงโด่งดัง (nai chûuang dòong-dang), which means “in the moment of the very famous”.
Ben: Khruu Pim, you also said earlier that ช่วง (chûuang) can be used to talk about distances and areas.
Pim: That’s right! For example, ตำรวจต้องปิดถนนช่วงห้าแยกลาดพร้าวถึงซอยลาดพร้าว (38 dtam-rùuat dtâwng bpìt thà-nǒn chûuang hâa-yâaegk lâat-phráao thǔeng saawy lâat-phráao sǎam-sìp bpàaet)
Ben:
Ben: The police had to close the road from Ladprao Intersection to Soi Ladprao 38. In this case, ช่วง means area, therefore the literal translation of the phrase ช่วงห้าแยกลาดพร้าวถึงซอยลาดพร้าว (38 chûuang hâa-yâaegk lâat-phráao thǔeng saawy lâat-phráao sǎam-sìp bpàaet) is the area from Ladprao Intersection to Soi Ladprao 38.
Pim: You can also use ช่วง (chûuang) to talk about a part of the day, as in...
ช่วงเย็นฉันชอบออกกำลังกาย
(chûuang yen chǎn châawp àawk-gam-lang-gaai.)
Ben: “I like to exercise in the late afternoon.”
Pim: Or maybe you want to talk about a section of the year. For example...
เมืองไทยมีปัญหากับมลพิษทางอากาศโดยเฉพาะในช่วงหน้าร้อน
(muueang-thai mii bpan-hǎa gàp mon-lá-phít thaang aa-gàat dooi-chà-pháw nai chûuang nâa-ráawn.)
Ben: “Thailand has a problem with air pollution, especially in the hot season.” That was kind of a long sentence. Can we break it up?
Pim: Sure. เมืองไทยมีปัญหา (muueang-thai mii bpan-hǎa)
Ben: “Thailand has a problem...”
Pim: กับมลพิษทางอากาศ (gàp mon-lá-phít thaang aa-gàat)
Ben: “with air pollution...”
Pim: โดยเฉพาะ (dooi-chà-pháw)
Ben: “especially...”
Pim: ในช่วงหน้าร้อน (nai chûuang nâa-ráawn.)
Ben: “in the hot season.”
