Pim: อีกครั้ง ช้า ๆ
หัวหน้า: คุณสุชาดา ข่าวการประท้วงที่คุณเขียนอยู่ไปถึงไหนแล้ว
(HǓUA-N A: khun sù-chaa-daa khàao gaan-bprà-thúuang thîi khun khǐian yùu bpai thǔeng nǎi láaeo.)

หัวหน้า: คุณสุชาดา ข่าวการประท้วงที่คุณเขียนอยู่ไปถึงไหนแล้ว
(HǓUA-N A: khun sù-chaa-daa khàao gaan-bprà-thúuang thîi khun khǐian yùu bpai thǔeng nǎi láaeo.)

สุชาดา: น่าจะเสร็จทันเวลาค่ะ
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: nâa-jà sèt than wee-laa khâ.)

(HǓUA-N A: dii mâak. phǒm khít wâa gaan-bprà-thúuang nâa-jà yûuet-yúuea bpai ìik naan.)
Ben: Very good. I think the protest is likely to continue for a long time.
สุชาดา: เห็นด้วยค่ะ แต่ดิฉันอยากทำข่าวอื่น ๆ บ้าง
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: hěn dûuai khâ. dtàae dì-chǎn yàak tham khàao ùuen-ùuen bâang.)
Ben: I agree. But I want to report on something else.
หัวหน้า: ไม่ต้องห่วง ใกล้เลือกตั้งแล้ว น่าจะมีอะไรเด็ด ๆ ให้คุณเขียนแน่นอน
(HǓUA-N A: mâi dtâwng hùuang. glâi lûueak-dtâng láaeo. nâa jà mii à-rai dètdèt hâi khun khǐian nâae-naawn.)
Ben: Don’t worry. The election is near. There should certainly be something interesting for you to write.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: It’s true that election time can get very dramatic in Thailand.
Pim: You said it!
Ben: So what do people do after the election is over.
Pim: Well, one thing they don’t do is go out to bars.
Ben: Really? You’d think some people will want to go out and celebrate. Why is that?
Pim: There’s a ban on alcohol sales during election days in Thailand.
Ben: Are you serious? Well, I guess they have laws like that in the US, too.
Pim: Yes. I know it doesn’t make much sense. But don’t worry. You can still drink your beer. You just have to buy it the day beforehand.
Ben: Well, thanks for that little tip. Now let’s look at the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim: ไปถึงไหน (bpai thǔeng nǎi)
Ben: This is a phrase used to ask “How far along are you?”
Pim: That’s right. ไป (bpai) is the verb “to go”, ถึง (thǔeng) means “until”, ไหน (nǎi) is a question word meaning “where”, “what”, or “which”, and แล้ว (láaeo) means “already”.
Ben: Now in the conversation, Suchada’s boss was asking about the news story she was working on, and he wanted to know what part of the work she had gotten to. So you can use this anytime you want to ask someone how far along they are in some task.
Pim: Sure. You would just state the task and then follow it with ไปถึงไหนแล้ว (bpai thǔeng nǎi láaeo.)
Ben: What if that task was writing a report?
Pim: Well, การเขียน (gaan-khǐian) is “writing”, and รายงาน (raai-ngaan) is “report”. So then you’d have... การเขียนรายงานไปถึงไหนแล้ว (gaan-khǐian raai-ngaan bpai thǔeng nǎi láaeo.)
Ben: “How far are you on writing the report?” Alright. What’s the next phrase?
Pim: เห็นด้วย (hěn dûuai)
Ben: This is a phrase that means “to agree” or “to go along with”.
Pim. Yes. เห็นด้วย (hěn dûuai) literally means “to see also”. So when you also see something the same way I do, we agree.
Ben: Hey, that makes a lot of sense.
Pim: ดิฉันเห็นด้วยค่ะ (dì-chǎn hěn dûuai khâ.) “I agree”.
Ben: And the last phrase is...
Pim: ใกล้ ... something... แล้ว (glâi...láaeo)
Ben: This is a pattern you can use to say that some event is soon approaching.
Pim: Exactly. ใกล้ (glâi) means “near”. But here it’s used to mean near in time instead of near in distance.
Ben: How about if you wanted to say that it’s nearly the end of the school year.
Pim: Well, we say ปิดเทอม (bpìt thooem) to mean the “end of the term”. So then ใกล้ปิดเทอมแล้ว (glâi bpìt thooem láaeo) is...
Ben: “It’s near the close of the term.” Great. Now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using น่าจะ (nâa-jà) to say something that is “likely”.
Pim: น่า nâa is a helping verb meaning “should” or “ought to”, and จะ jà puts the verb into the future tense. In a sentence, น่าจะ (nâa-jà) needs to be followed by a verb or an adjective that functions like a verb.
Ben: Well, what was one of the examples from the conversation?
Pim: Suchada told her boss that the news story น่าจะเสร็จทันเวลา (nâa jà sèt than wee-laa.)
Ben: “It should be finished on time.”
Pim: We also had the phrase น่าจะยืดเยื้อ (nâa-jà yûuet-yúuea.)
Ben: “It should continue”.
Pim: And then a very simple one is น่าจะมี (nâa-jà mii)
Ben: “should have” or “There should be”.
Pim: Right. For example, toothpaste is ยาสีฟัน (yaa-sǐi-fan). So What would it mean if I said ร้านนี้น่าจะมียาสีฟัน (ráan níi nâa-jà mii yaa-sǐi-fan) ?
Ben: “This shop should have toothpaste.”
Pim: You got it!
Ben: Now I remember you said something about adjectives that act like verbs.
Pim: Oh, yes. In English, you have to say “it’s hot”. But in Thai, you can simply say ร้อน ráawn. So when you use an adjective like that, you can put น่าจะ (nâa-jà) right in front of it. As an example, maybe you were invited to go jogging at 1pm on a bright sunny day. I could reply...
มันน่าจะร้อนเกินไป (man nâa-jà ráawn gooen bpai)
Ben: “It’s likely to be too hot.” How about we wrap things up with a review of some sentences we learned. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Pim. First, “It should be finished on time”.
Pim: น่าจะเสร็จทันเวลา (nâa jà sèt than wee-laa.)
Ben: (pause) “This shop should have toothpaste.”
Pim: ร้านนี้น่าจะมียาสีฟัน (ráan níi nâa-jà mii yaa-sǐi-fan)
Ben: (pause) And “It’s likely to be too hot.”
Pim: มันน่าจะร้อนเกินไป (man nâa-jà ráawn gooen bpai.) (pause)

Outro

Ben: And that’s it for this lesson. See you next time!
Pim: แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (Læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀ kh̀a)
