Ben: Oh, what bad luck! Err...I almost forgot. There is some big news from half an hour ago. Some buses collided at Victory Monument. And it caused many other car collisions. Right now, the traffic is really jammed up. Can you go out and report on this?
สุชาดา: เอ่อ...ก็ได้ค่ะ
(SÙ-CHAA-DAA: òoe...gâaw dâai khâ.)
Ben: Umm...yes, OK.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Pim, that’s quite unfortunate for Fon to get bit by a dog. Are stray dogs in Thailand pretty dangerous?
Pim: Not for the most part. Actually most stray dogs are very timid. They usually try to get out of your way.
Ben: So you’d say rabies isn’t that widespread?
Pim: I don’t think so. Mange is a much bigger issue for stray dogs than rabies.
Ben: So you’ve never been attacked by a stray dog?
Pim: No I haven’t. But one of my friends was bitten by a monkey once.
Ben: Now that’s not something you hear every day. OK, let’s take a look at the vocabulary now.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ben: Let's take a closer look at the words and phrases from this lesson. First we have...
Pim: โชคร้ายจัง (chôok ráai jang)
Ben: This means “What bad luck!”
Pim: That’s right.โชค (chôok) is the noun “luck”, and ร้าย (R̂āy) is an adjective meaning “bad” or “cruel”.
Ben: And what does จัง (jang) at the end of the phrase mean?
Pim: จัง jang is just included as an intensifier. โชคร้ายจัง (chôok ráai jang)
Ben: “What bad luck!” Now the next phrase is...
Pim: ชนกัน (chon gan)
Ben: And this would mean “collide together”. Is that right?
Pim: Yes. ชน (chon) is a verb that means “to collide”. And กัน (gan) can mean “one another” or “together”.
Ben: So by saying ชนกัน (chon gan) you automatically know that you’re talking about 2 or more objects as the subject.
Pim: Exactly. Thai can be ambiguous at times when it comes to singular and plural. But in the conversation, when you heard มีรถเมล์ชนกัน (mii rót-mee chon gan) you automatically know that it has to be “Some buses collided” and not “a bus collided”.
Ben: What is the last phrase?
Pim: มีรถอีกหลายคัน (mii rót ìik lǎai khan)
Ben: This means “There were many more cars”. Does รถ (rót) always mean “car”?
Pim: Actually, รถ (rót) can refer to any vehicle with wheels. So it could mean “cars and trucks”.
Ben: And what’s the purpose of คัน (khan) in this phrase?
Pim: คัน (khan) is the classifier for cars. In this case, we say “many” instead of giving an actual number, but you still need to use a classifier.
Ben: I see. But what if it was a number, like 6 for example?
Pim: Then you’d say มีรถอีกหกคัน (mii rót ìik hòk khan)
Ben: “There were six more cars.” OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is using ถูก thùuk to express the passive voice.
Pim: So passive voice is when an action gets done to the subject. Is that right?
Ben: Exactly. So instead of saying “A monkey bit me”, you’d say “I was bitten by a monkey.”
Pim: This is really easy to do in Thai. You just put the word ถูก thùuk before a verb. To use your example, I could say...
ดิฉันถูกลิงกัด
(dì-chǎn thùuk ling gàt.)
Ben: “I was bitten by a monkey.” Now that’s in contrast with the active voice, which would be...
Pim: ลิงกัดดิฉัน (ling gàt dì-chǎn.)
Ben: “A monkey bit me.” Let’s have both of those again for a comparison. Listen and repeat after Khru Pim. First the active voice, “A monkey bit me.”
Pim: ลิงกัดดิฉัน (ling gàt dì-chǎn.)
Ben: (pause) Now the passive voice. “I was bitten by a monkey.”
Pim: ดิฉันถูกลิงกัด (dì-chǎn thùuk ling gàt.)
Ben: (pause) How about we change to a different example.
Pim: OK. ยิง (ying) means “to shoot”. So you can guess the meaning of this sentence... เขาถูกยิง (khǎo thùuk ying.)
Ben: Is it “He was shot”?
Pim: That’s right. Now I’ll give you another. ตี (dtii) means “to hit”. So can you guess what this sentence means... เธอถูกแฟนตี (thooe thùuk faaen dtii.)
Ben: I guess that would mean “She was hit by her boyfriend.” He doesn’t sound like a very nice guy. Can we make a more cheerful passive voice sentence, like “The game was won by the home team”?
Pim: Well, actually the meaning of ถูก (thùuk) is “to suffer”, “to hit”, or “to undergo”. So all the passive voice sentences constructed with ถูก (thùuk) are going to be about bad stuff happening.
Ben: I see. That’s quite interesting. Well, in that case, let’s review all of the sentences we just had with bad stuff happening. Are you ready? Please repeat after Khru Pim. “I was bitten by a monkey.”
Pim: ดิฉันถูกลิงกัด (dì-chǎn thùuk ling gàt.)
Ben: (pause) Next, “He was shot”
Pim: เขาถูกยิง (khǎo thùuk ying.)
Ben: (pause) Alright. And we finally we had “She was hit by her boyfriend.”
Pim: เธอถูกแฟนตี (thooe thùuk faaen dtii). (pause)

Outro

Ben: And that’s it for this lesson. Thank you for listening! See you next time!
Pim: ขอบคุณค่ะ แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (K̄hxbkhuṇ kh̀a læ̂w phb kạn h̄ım̀ kh̀a)
